Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaait a second. You'll back the clusterfuck that's been the Elite: Dangerous kickstarter, but not one that looks, to my veteran eyes, a thousand times better?

    Who's being tricked here dude?

  2. candide Armchair Designer

No, 'cause that game is already over the hill and I don't have infinite pockets. It does look interesting though.

I worry that Elite won't hit its goal, especially since as you say it's been such a clusterfuck.
  3. Brian Rubin Armchair Designer

I worry that it WILL hit its goal and still never see the light of day.

  4. Plugging this Kickstarter because there needs to be more LGBTQ representation in games. It's a gay dating sim for PC/Mac/Linux called Coming Out On Top; I've played the demo (It has a demo! That's way more polished and complete than many Kickstarters demos I've seen!), and so far it features humour, snappy dialogue, and characters who actually feel like real people with real world issues instead of the idealized figures that so often figure in a typical dating sim. It used to be on Steam Greenlight before it got shot down by homophobes (okay, granted, the art was horrible back then but it looks amazing now - it's impressive how much the artist improved in such a short amount of time), and I'd like to see people actually give it a chance this time around now that the creator's got her act together and actually put out a fine-looking demo.

Warning: Contains erotic content (censored in the demo, of course), so you have to be over 18 to play the full game when it comes out.

This may have been why it was removed from Greenlight, actually. Steam has a fairly strict policy on erotic content. Specifically: no.
Bryce and Eduardo X like this.
  6. Actually, the creator removed it herself because the response was so overwhelmingly critical. Apparently she just threw it up there (this was waaay before the $100 fee thing happened) because she was looking for feedback, not because she seriously thought Steam would accept it.

Does a Bill Nye science game lean more toward "that's cool" or "THIS IS AN ABUSE OF KICKSTARTER BY CELEBRITIESARGLBARGL"? You decide!

  10. I literally don't think the creator literally understands the meaning of the word "literally". Unless I'm completely misunderstanding this and players LITERALLY become birds in which case I AM THROWING ALL MY MONEY AT THIS KICKSTARTER OMG

Fun fact: it wouldn't be the first Bill Nye game. That honor goes to "Bill Nye the Science Guy: Stop the Rock!", released back in 1996.

Another interesting-looking kickstarter: Forsaken Fortress. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1317934609/forsaken-fortress

They're looking for $100k in the next 22 days. The project is ambitious as hell - a small squad combat RTS/RPG in an end of the world survival scenario, where you have to both defend and look for materials with which to finish your spaceship to leave the shithole the planet has become. In some ways it's a RTS Fallout meets X-Com meets Jagged Alliance. A game like this has enormous potential, but it's going to take a lot of balancing and a whole lot of content to pull it off. Frankly, I don't think $100k is nearly enough to do a project like this justice, but they already have some good-looking tech demo vids on there.

Sui Generis made it with 6 hours to go.

I ultimately decided not to fund this one. The technology looks cool, but I still don't have any feel for the type of gameworld they're looking to create. For all I know, this will be generic RPG game #4,287 and not something distinctive.

That Bill Nye game looks like an outrageous rip-off of "Pilotwings" for N64!

Also, they have a step-goal to develop it for Kinect, which I guess is the part where you "literally" become a bird. Still looks superboring. Please don't make physics all about seagulls. No one likes seagulls.

Sir, You Are Being Hunted is ~200% funded with 48 hours to go. If they reach £100k they'll hit the multiplayer stretch goal. They posted a cool thank you video:

I think I've hit my Kickstarter funding limit for the year. I've backed five projects, one of which was a movie. Unless the greatest project ever comes along, I think I need to see some results before I continue to invest.
  25. Raife Magister Mundi Elyscape

I may be the only person that gets annoyed by this, but I really don't like when reward levels let the donor be an NPC in the game. The one that really stands out for me is FTL, where crew names are taken from a list that includes $100+ donors, so you might get a Mantis named Rick M or whatever. You can only rename your initial crew in FTL, so if you get them later, you're stuck with it.

I've seen other Kickstarter games take this approach, like Drifter, and I'm already kind of dreading running into a funky alien merchant ship that's named PooPTAstiC or Brian Rubin. I donated to Drifter at a level that qualified, but opted out of the NPC naming thing for that reason.

  32. Oh wow, thanks for the plug! Much appreciated. This is Obscura here...I've actually had an account on brokenforum for a little while now but I've just lurked. I didn't even know this thread was here since I usually just hang out in the Let's Plays.

To answer your questions about Steam Greenlight, I pulled my game off because I was never serious about actually getting on there in the first place. I wanted to get public feedback on my screenshots, and the feedback was, "TERRIBLE." XD

Now that I've changed the art, people new to the game are asking about Steam. Even with the improved art, there's just no way my game would make it on due to the eroticism. (I think some hetero dating sim was pulled off for adult content...I just can't remember the name of it.)

The Kickstarter has been doing pretty well, better than I ever could have anticipated (I thought it would take me 50+ days to reach over 5K.) I think it's hit the slow middle phase of the campaign at the moment.

Anyways, thank you for the mention Anabanana. Totally awesome of you. If anybody has any questions or concerns, let me know.
  33. Oh hey Obscura! I'm actually Anarchy from Lemmasoft Forums, haha. It's amazing how well your Kickstarter is going! You'll definitely reach the $13000 stretch goals by the time this is done, since you have, what? 41 days left? Soooooo excited for you!

  36. Haha. The reality is I'm currently thinking about 400+ people and hoping to make them ecstatically happy in a year's time. The more money raised = the more I'm expected to deliver. NO PRESSURE. IT'LL BE FINE, I'M SURE.

So Galactic Keep is doing a Kickstarter to raise funds to finish development. It's fairly far along and the developer has shipped other games, so a pretty safe investment as far as Kickstarter video games go. That's assuming they make their goal, I guess, which is modest ($45K), but on a tight time table (two weeks). I really love the concept and the look and feel of the game; if you cut your teeth on tabletop RPGs in the 70s-80s, the hand-drawn art will likely give you warm fuzzies. So give it some love! $5 gets you a copy of the game, the soundtrack, and an exclusive character.

There is more info about the game and the setting on the official website.

Edit: they also just announced that they are going to release a PC version as well. $20 gets you both the iOS version and the DRM-free PC version.

I have some bad news for those of you who might have contributed to Code Hero ("a game that teaches you how to make games! Your Code Ray shoots Javascript in Unity 3D").
    Full article.

According to the Kickstarter page for the project, in addition to the six people that each pledged over $1k, two other people even donated as much as $10,000 each. And you gotta love these stretch goals announced late in the game:
There's also some interesting stuff being said in the comments section for the Kickstarter.
