Sup? They did pretty much everything you asked of them...

For me it was too little, too late, plus laying off 14 people 2 weeks before Christmas while still asking for money left a REALLY bad taste in my mouth, above and beyond Braben's been promising this for over a decade, so I have little faith it'll actually see the light of day. I'd be delighted to eat crow in this case, though.

Too little too late? They did most of it a couple of weeks into a 2-month campaign, and produced update after update.

The layoffs thing is absurd; you have no idea of the circumstances around this. We laid off someone from our company just before Xmas, should we fail as well?

You've been making up reasons to dislike this from the start. Go back and read your SEO blog post and tell me how much they've since done. Being upset this is getting funded is bizarre.
  4. Brian Rubin Armchair Designer

I just can't get happy about it. It feels like a disaster waiting to happen, which for me is unusual to say the least.
  5. candide Armchair Designer

Woohoo, let's hope they'll raise a lot more in the remaining 2 days.

I can understand having reservations about the project (I didn't back it, though I'll gladly buy the game if all goes well), but the layoff thing makes no sense, Brian. Why wouldn't they keep seeking funding after laying off some of their people? Do you think they want to lay off even more people?
  7. candide Armchair Designer

So the final tally is around 2.05 mil USD, which seems pretty low for a game of such ambition. The comparatively puny (scope-wise) Double Fine Adventure got more and if one believes the latest documentary episode they are running short already. We'll see. I'm a backer at the 'get your name into the NPC naming database' level so prepare for an universe sparsely populated by candides giving you a hard time!

Did you pledge Brian? I got in on the 20$ tier.
  9. UnSub Armchair Designer

No, but it looks bad if things are so tight that they can't hold onto people for another month while their next major project gets funded (or what passes for the public opinion of getting funding, anyway).

Yeah, they do some cool things in code, SupComms AI and the flow field pathing model, for example. But I have never been able to get excited about any of their games from a design or art point of view.

I'd suggest this isn't a great approach to business, GPG:

It's US$1.1m to fund development of this title for about a year. (Plus direct contributions through PayPal. Plus probably direct site sales / Founders Packs.) That doesn't seem like a lot, especially since if they only just make funding they'll probably get in the order of 85% to 90% of it after fees and non-payers.

Unlike them good old days when we had great names, like Doom and Wizardry.

I have always wanted a game protagonist who wears a bandolier with bones in it. It's a dream come true.

An ARPG from Gaspowered Games? So, another Siege game? Great. Just what the world needed.

    Also. fuck Chris Taylor.

Just remove "free-to-play" and insert "episodic" and it's like you've stepped into a time machine.

I guess I had him confused with someone else, because looking over his resume and GPG's output, there is absolutely nothing that really appeals to me and a ton that I actively dislike. Well, makes that call even easier.

While this Space MMOG has been around for over a decade, they are asking for $100k to fun the development of the iOS version and additional features as stretch goals.

Gamers With Jobs put up an interesting general piece about Kickstarter the other day. But what really caught my eye was the link to whole saga around some card game that was funded back in 2011.

    Oh my.

  30. Hanzii Magister Mundi Elyscape

Sort of a silly article - all the (few) Kickstarters I have helped fund have had a risk part of their project where they spell out, that they might not succeed, so I don't agree, that it's like a storefront. I've also only funded stuff very likely to deliver, but where ¤preordering" gave me something, that I wouldn't get it otherwise, so to call it "kickstarter's dirty little secret" that it's not really an investment, because your money can't multiply, is stupid.

    It's crowdfunding, not crowd investing.
  31. Sarkus Hard Cider Gal

I agree that the GWJ article isn't anything special - anyone with half a brain should understand what is going on. I mainly just linked it as a courtesy. My main interest was the stuff about the card game, which is linked from within the article and also in my post seperately.

So is the Small World 2 for the iPad a video game Kickstarter or...?

I'm not sure if I should back, since I'll be getting the game for free anyway (existing Small World for iPad owner)... $30 for 3 races and 3 powers is a bit much. Of course I get to give the game to someone, I can then beat in MP.

What I really want is the wooden tokens or the Designer Edition of the board game, but the price is too rich, especially with international shipping and local taxes added.
  33. Hanzii Magister Mundi Elyscape

Yeah, the "The sun says to me it want to be secret"-lady was well worth bringing to our attention.

There's another similar update on the 18th Jan 2013. It's actually kind of sad to see, really.

I am sad I didn't back this, but i was all meh doesn't look that great when the KS was running... But it does have glow sticks...

Why did the glow sticks not open my heart and wallet? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? :(
  36. Bahimiron Already Beat BF's New Expansion

There are two big game update threads on the game's BGG page and both of them are pretty bananas. After a couple of posts she seems to realize that she's not doing herself any favors, so she just quietly disappears.

The GWJ article is pretty dumb, but there really does seem to be an issue now with people using Kickstarter as a storefront. Though KS has, in the past few months, removed all references about being specfically to get projects off the ground from their literature. I know that they used to have stuff like that, cos when Penny Arcade did a Kickstarter that was literally preorders for a product that would be coming out anyway, people noted that it was actually against KS's terms. Not anymore, it seems!

Or a complete mess that has everyone wondering wtf DoW is thinking? Yes.

Hey, DoW, if you want a big cash infusion for SW2, how about dropping the price of SW1 to $2.99 for a week?

Reading her DA journal is scary.

Also, she's posting a bunch of this nonsense on her Facebook, sharing it with probably close to a thousand other people - including some creepy ramblings about pedophilia.
  39. malphigian Oh, Come On

Yeah, I mean, not that I didn't laugh at Gene "TimeCube" Ray back in the day, but I shouldn't have and I've long since stopped finding schizophrenics on the internet as a source of humor. It's super depressing. You can still see these creative/intelligent people trapped underneath a huge pile of hallucinations and/or paranoid delusions, and pile on of "lol!" posts from commenters can't be helping any.

Well, pledgers on the kickstarter project have told her to see help, and I haven't seen any posts that are "lol" stuff. In fact, they are remarkably positive considering how many of her updates have stated that printing has started. She clearly has major issues that she needs to get help with.
