Before you do anything else - download and install DSFix and the DS Mouse Fix. Read the instructions. Follow them.

A general note: Disregard all XBOX-controller guides in the game. The controller controls and the m+keyboard controls have nothing in common. While the E key functions as the controller's A-button some of the time, some of the time it doesn't. Do not go insane when this happens.

Please feel free to add stuff you wonder about or have discovered.

    MENU controls:

DO NOT USE THE MOUSE in menus. There’s an option in the mod to disable the cursor in the game, activate it. I’m serious. When you’re in a menu, let go of the mouse.

ENTER is your friend. It will open any highlighted menu item. When you don’t know what key to press - try ENTER first. Use Arrow Keys for normal menu navigation. This is all you need for character creation. TIP: Sometimes the game will tell you that a door is locked or something similar and the game will enter a Menu Open state which can be dangerous depending on the situation. Press ENTER to close these messages immediately.

DARK SOULS menus are centered on the following six grouped keys: Ins, Del, Home, End, PgUp and PgDn. (Plus Backspace.)

Home is used to activate/deactivate Games for Windows Live! That’s all.

End is used in DS as most/all other games use the Esc key. It opens/closes the in-game menu where you can use the Arrow Keys to browse between the Inventory, Equipment, Character and Menu screens. Press ENTER to open/activate the highlighted selection. Press End to quit all menus and get back into the game world. This is true for ALL menus, including vendor inventory.

Ins can be pressed when an item/stat is highlighted to see more info about the object/stat. It also browses the info part of the screen on the right. This is useful for when you want to see which headgear has the best Curse resist for instance. Press Ins to browse to the screen you want (the last of three in this case). The use the arrow keys to move up/down in the inventory.

Del can be used to unequip highlighted items in the Equipment screen and also to open up more info on items and stats in the Inventory and Character screens.

PgUp/PgDn are used to scroll between the four above-mentioned screens when one is opened.

Backspace moves you back, or up, one menu. If for instance you are upgrading a weapon at a smith, Backspace will get you back to the smith's opening menu. This can also be accomplished with right-click if you disregarded my earlier suggestion. If you happen to right-click at the wrong time you may well attack someone you'd rather not anger. Backspace is completely safe. Your call.

ISSUES: Currently I haven't found a way to make this work when engaging foes that have dialog, ie some NPC:s. The game will act as if you're trying to fight with the menu open, i.e you can't lock on etc.

    IN GAME controls:

For now, reference this wonderful pic as a ... reference. AFAIK, the info on how to Parry/riposte is incorrect. VERIFIED: You just hit TAB to parry. At the exact and precise time. The info in the reference picture is incorrect.

Added: Holding LCtrl lets you walk, which works as sneaking as long as you are wearing light non-metal armor.

Tab likely works the same as L2 on console, which basically means that when you tap it, it swings your shield outward, yes? If so then yeah, you just tab it so that your shield meets the enemy's attack, more or less. Adjust early until you get the hang of it. You want to press the button BEFORE their attack lands.

Yes, exactly. I'll confirm it tomorrow, so I'm 100% sure.

Fixed the OP. Charles is correct about how Parry works. Just press Tab.

Ugh, is there no way to change the damn hotkey suggestions to do things to be correct for keyboard? Getting pretty tired of seeing B and hitting B without thinking and it doesn't work.

I believe there is if you read the readme for the Mouse Mod. I would recommend that you stick with it though, you get the hang of it after awhile.

Edit: I misread you! No, there's no way that I know of to get rid of the controller suggestions.

A long, long, long History of Violence

Where we examine the possibilities of inflicting grievous bodily harm upon the other denizens of the Dark Souls world, using only a mouse and a keyboard.

You have two hands. Every hand has two slots. You can equip pretty much any piece of equipment in either hand. This guide will however assume that you are using melee weapons in your right hand and shields in your left hand. But you don't really have to.

LMB - Fast melee attack OR fire weapon or spell.
LMB+W - A kick. Unless you have a curved sword equipped, in which case you will do a backward flip and fast attack. You cannot Kick with these weapons equipped. OTOH, you cannot do a backward flip without those weapons either.
LMB+Shift - If you have a Spear or Piercing sword equipped, you perform a fast attack without lowering your shield. Costs extra stamina.

RMB - A heav(ier), slow(er) melee attack, sometimes preceded by a leap forward.
RMB+W - A leaping heavy attack. Often looks very cool and can easily get you killed as you are generally wide open for a counter during the leap.

Space followed by LMB - From standstill: Jump backwards followed by a swift attack. From sprinting: A forward roll followed by a swift unique attack.

MMB - Lock on target and/or centre camera behind you. (This is VERY important. The ability to quickly switch the camera 180 degrees is crucial in Dark Souls. Do NOT do this with the mouse as it will take far too long.)

    To be continued ...

I just installed the two suggested fixes and the game became really jerky, to the point of being unplayable. Are they resource hogs? My pc is ancient, but before I installed them the game was running fine - I mean, the controls sucked, but I had no problems with the jerkiness... any idea why, and how could I solve this (beside uninstalling them)?

I can only imagine it's the DSFix that's causing problems. I'd try out changing settings in that ini file but other than that, I've no clue, sorry.
