I'm considering getting some cheap airplay speakers for my bathroom, but I'm not sure they'll fulfill my needs. I know they'll stream audio from my iOS devices / iTunes library. Can I stream other audio to them via Airplay? e.g., iOS apps like Spotify, Pandora, etc? On the other hand, maybe it'd be best just to get a second iHome dock for the bathroom. I mainly just want to have audio available while I'm showering / getting ready for school / etc. Anyone have thoughts on the best way to solve this problem?
I bought an Airport Express and plugged speakers into that. Seemed cheaper and more flexible than AirPay speakers. Pus, configure it for wireless bridging and you can plug in your wired-only, err.... toothbrush? Shower head? Ok, maybe not a selling point. Or get an Apple TV and mount a TV... on the roof of your shower? These are all horrible ideas. I apologize. I haven't found an app that doesn't work with AirPlay yet.
Cool thanks XPav. Though looking at my particular needs, just purchasing a second cheap iHome doc for the bathroom may be the way to go. As nice as streaming is, it's just as easy to plug in the phone and queue up whatever it is i want to listen to at the moment...
The other fun with Airplay is that other devices can send music to it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPlay So you can read the temperature from your Nest thermostat on your computer and automatically play "It's getting hot in here" at full volume when the temp crosses 85F. Man, I am just FULL of horrible ideas today.
As awesome as that sounds, I'm not going to install a NEST thermostat in my folks' house. Nor am I likely to sell my old man on one. I like the idea of Airplay but it sounds like a nice iHome alarm clock for my bedroom and a speaker dock for the bathroom will accomplish everything I'm looking for.
I have an airport express hooked up to my home stereo and can stream rdio from my iPad to speakers. I assume pandora and spotify would work as well.
