This deserves its own thread. I have been wanting a copy of alien crossfire for a long long time but refused to pay the prices wanted for it. Now since I already have AC from GoG I can just download it. I think its time for a nice long game of AC now. http://www.gog.com/gamecard/sid_meiers_alpha_centauri
The weird thing about AC is that it was an awesome expansion in every respect (IMO) except for the two factions that were its namesake: the aliens. They were terrible! Absolutely awful. They made the game easy to an un-fun degree if you played as them, and they were just irritating if you played against them. Oh... and thanks, brettmcd. I have a copy of that sucker already, but you're right: such an awesome game does deserve its own thread.
Yes, this. Although personally I don't really like any of the new human factions much either, so when I play I typically just have the original seven factions, and use the expansion just for the new techs and associated balance changes. When I finish my Gnomoria LP, Alpha Centauri may well be my next one.
I played the crap out of Alpha Centauri back in the day, and I never even knew there was an expansion... I even have the original AC disks over here on the shelf within sight. Only three dollars for the full game plus expansion now? Guess I'll be repurchasing...
Wing Commander 1 & 2 and Privateer also received free expansion pack updates, in case you own those. Very cool of GOG.
I know it comes up every few years and I keep forgetting why they have not remade this completely awesome game yet. Some kind of rights issue? Someone who doesn't think hats made out of money are fashionable? I was just thinking of this the other day as I've long ago lost my original discs. I think this will be the one that pulls me into GoG.
Yeah, it's a rights issue. EA holds the IP, while Firaxis is now a subsidiary of a different company (2K). Although that wouldn't stop EA commissioning its own FPS sequel... *shudder*
I'd imagine that they don't own the rights to the full name "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri" and would therefore have to release any remake as "Alpha Centauri", which might not be appealing to a random store-goer.
It's the same reason why there is no successor for Master of Magic or why there are still people preferring Civ4 over Civ5 or why there is so much hate in the official X-com forums. There is no point in making a 1to1 copy but any change, no matter how good/minor/necessary, will be perceived negatively by a good amount of the old fanbase.
That may be a thing, but it is definitely not a reason why any video game sequel/remake has ever been prevented from getting made. No game company is going to forego the chance at cashing in on a successful IP because they think they've reached their pinnacle and might piss some fans nerds off. Edit to qualify: Off the top of my head I can think of Warcraft Adventures and Starcraft: Ghost being canceled due to concerns about meeting the expected level of quality for their franchises, but then Blizzard went on to develope and release other games in those same franchises. They weren't abandoned as "too successful".
