Dungeon Raid has put me in the mood for a proper dungeon crawl. What's a good one to play on an Android tablet? Ideally I am looking for something fairly meaty, with an interesting advancement/equipment system, fun and relatively fast-paced combat, and property touch controls (as opposed to onscreen d-pad/buttons/etc).
So the Ouya started shipping, I guess? In limited quantities but I have to admit that already exceeded my expectations. We'll see what happens next, I guess.
It's not a non-issue. It's there, and it is an annoying roadblock to a common aspect of RPGs. That you don't necessarily need the upgrades is completely beside the point, they are there, and they are largely out of reach due to bullshit in app purchases reasons.
Square and shoddy ports are synonyms. If FFT is ever released on android, I assume this will still be accurate: http://www.bluh.org/how-not-to-make-an-ipad-game-final-fantasy-tactics/
Here's a few to get started, though they don't meet all your criteria. Old school (more depth, less touch-based) : Oubliette Dungeon crawl stone soup (there are two ports) Angband/TOME/Nethack/Rogue Bard's tale New school (less depth, more touch-based) : Delver Dweller Wazhack Endless depths Andor's trail Cyber knights 9th dawn
I called it a non issue because money is easy to get. I've been upgrading quite often (and paying for the process to be immediate) and I'm still sitting on over $1000. I don't like in-app purchases or games based around them; this is not one of those games. I understand where you're coming from and very early on it can feel like money is tight, but when you're getting $100-$150 in a single battle by mid-game it's a non-issue.
So because money is easy to get later on I should completely ignore the fact that money is hard to get *now*? That's some logic right there.
This is a ridiculous argument. Not to be rude, but it is. Almost all games force you to make decisions with your money early on; you can't buy everything you want at the beginning of the game. Yes, you'll have to save and/or make choices about what you want to buy and upgrade until you reach the later portions of the game. Just like every other game ever made!
Actually, I'm buying almost nothing; I can't really afford much of anything. And I still don't have a fifth character. Yes, games make you make decisions. Most, however, balance it so that you can actually *buy* the things they put in front of you.
Also, the thing you are handily ignoring is the fact that you can't just 'buy' an upgrade, you have to roll for it. So sometimes that $150 upgrade costs $450 or more; after two fails I'm often completely out of money and then have to go grind shit. There is literally no gameplay reason to have a random chance of getting nothing except with the express intent of forcing you to pay real money for game currency.
You are ignoring that the armor is more a money sink than anything since the stats are so pathetic. You get better stats from the stuff you buy from the potion seller and equip.
Three tries of a staff right now, $75 each, $225 total. Come back in five hours, or speed up for $150. If I do that, I'm down at barely enough money to travel. Oh, and my characters are all about level 18 (only 4 so far), and a fight for a quest nets me about $40. Finishing a quest nets me about $30.
Also if you want to make that game significantly easier get a druid. They have a nice heal over time and can put enemies to sleep.
Dungeon Raid question. Am I doing something wrong or are classes really hard to unlock? I've been really enjoying this game so put quite a few hours into it over the last few days (it was on a Holiday sale for 0.99 and I saw it mentioned, so it's new to me), but I've only unlocked one class and managed to upgrade it only once. Is the trophy drop chance from special monsters something very very low?
There's definitely some grind here. I've got like four classes unlocked and none of them are leveled over 2.
If you care about unlocking stuff, it's super grindy. You kinda just have to play and not worry about it.
Well, "care". I do want it to happen sometime, yes :D But I'm fine with it taking a while - just wanted to confirm I wasn't missing something secret-but-simple like "stuff will drop when you one-shot bosses" or some other such thing. Thanks for confirming that it's just grindy!
There are abilities you can get that will spawn bosses faster. If you really wanted you could just play up til the first boss (which takes seconds if you are a fast swiper) and then make a new game.
The full version of Dungelot is out now, and it's a pretty fun little roguelike-lite. You don't specifically walk around the levels, but you uncover them tile by tile to find monsters, rewards, shops, etc.
Been playing the bejeezus out of Granny Smith on my N7. Great little game, well worth the $3 or whatever I paid for it.
Is there a difference between bosses and special monsters? I've been flooded with trophies in some games and not so much in others and I can't tell the reason why. Is it something the music would have indicated? I'm only missing one class but I'm having a hell of a time getting the mage over 3.
Finally, we get to see what all those iPhone gamers have been raving about. :) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.distractionware.superhexagon
QuestLord looks sufficiently interesting to overcome the awful name and get my $2. I'll report back shortly, probably after my bus ride tomorrow.
Some free games: Aaagh! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sikakraa.dungeonproject To be honest I haven't played much of this one other than to see that it runs but the art-style is pretty hilarious and there is some neat blocking/striking gameplay in there. Galaxy Hero https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.galaxyhero.main This is a passable shooter with some level up mechanics and equipment. It seems to be a labor of love and it's neat to at least try. If you like it there is a 99 cent version that doesn't have any extra features but gives this guy a little coin. And in my opinion the most interesting of these but with a major drawback: WazHack https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wazhack.WazHack It's a side-scrolling roguelike with a nice sense of humor and some stuff I haven't ever seen in other roguelikes (a curse that made weapons slip out of my hands, a potion that turned everything psychadelic.) The problem is that it may crash your device, it did it to me once when exiting. But if you are brave or don't care if you get a sudden reboot you should take a look at it.
The Grimoire thread has me thinking about going back and playing some of the Gold Box games. Has anyone had any success running games like that emulated on their android tablet/phone? DosBox Turbo seems like it gets the best reviews and most support among the dos emus, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5maXNoc3RpeC5kb3Nib3giXQ..
My experience with everything from bards tale to star control 2 is that emulating keyboard input sucks ass, even if the port itself is fine.
I know this was already on iOS, but The Sandbox has released for Android. Its a cross between those "match 2 elements to make a new one" games and the style of game where you create dirt and soil and plants and wind to make some type of reaction. Seems cool so far!
