Anyone else planning to pick up the Wii U version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate? (LFG thread)

This thing's not out until March 19 (22 in Europe), so this may be a bit premature, but I think it'd be nice to get a decent BF hunting party together and start tearing through the game once everyone has their copies in hand.

Disclaimer: this is my first Monster Hunter game, so odds are I'll be shitty

No, the 3DS version doesn't have online play, because Capcom. There's nothing like Ad-hoc Party available, either, because Nintendo. So, if you're doing online, it's Wii U. But, hey, at least it's something to do with the thing, since the Platinum stuff is still far away and Pikmin 3 is looking increasingly unlikely to launch before Xenublade. From the looks of things, this is the Wii U lineup before Christmas.

    "What is this game?"

Weird sort of quasi-RPG. You kill huge (and supposedly really hard?) bosses, turn their corpses into gear, and use that to kill huger, harder bosses. It's both very hardcore and LOOTLOOTLOOT and very Japanese, which means that the most likely places that people who might have some interest would congregate are the Dark Souls forum and the kawaii bridge. Notice how - certified genius that I am - I have not posted this in either of those locations.

Yes, this is an LFG thread. No, it's not an MMO, so it doesn't go there. If you're (lucky? unlucky?) I've underestimated the popularity this game will have enough that it gets a subforum, so you don't have to look at the thread polluting your forum index any more.

I will be picking up a Wii U just for monster hunter 3 ultimate..

There were a few people on QT3 that was playing monster hunter tri on Wii as well.

I played almost every monster hunter games since 2, the monster hunter game really give a sense of fulfillment/accomplishment that no other game gives including game like Dark Souls.

I don't understand why they keep putting these games on the most inappropriate consoles. Hardcore, online, RPG grindfest SCREAMS PS3 to me.

If you are into monster hunter and have a PSV(the 0.01% of people here), you should check out Soul Sacrifice.

I imported this week, quite fun, easier than monster hunter so far..

I'm interested in monsters (for a second, I typed 'momsters', which is way more revealing and terrifying)... monsters, I say, and the hunting of them. My network ID is Subt3xt. I'll be the one running around with a big sword yelling for help :)

I haven't picked the game up yet; probably won't do that until Friday. But I'm A-A-Afti, because I couldn't do a four-letter NNID.

Has anyone played the retail version of MH3U yet? The demo had a really peculiar and terrible controller latency issue, wondering if that's been fixed.
  15. idris_z I Pretty Much Live Here

I rode on the coattail of gear of war midnight launch at gamestop and got monster hunter instead, the store dude high fived me for been the only person there with both 3ds and wii u version of monster hunter...

I won't have time to play much online until after April, no weekends for me for the next 4 weeks.

I worked the midnight for Gears last night and totally high-fived a guy buying the Wii U and 3DS versions. Creepy.

Nah, Macomb. I figured that it couldn't have been you, but what a coincidence that would have been.

I'm stuck on my 3DS at moment, since the data transfer program isn't out yet, making decent progress in village quest, almost to 5 star now.

so far the only boss that manage to kill me is the gobul with his sucking water attack, I hate unblockable attacks..

Lance is still as awesome as ever, wearing starting armor and breeze through the earlier boss really speed up the earlier phase of the game. If you are new at monster hunter, you should try out Lance, yes you move slow, but it's actually very easy to use and hit with it, and one of the highest sustain damage weapon in the game, you take very little damage since one of the first charm you get from village give you auto-guard, which means you don't even need to block.

Also they added in a new feature, you can lock on to a boss monster for a split second by targeting it on your bottom 3ds screen or gamepad screen, and tap left shoulder button to instantly rotate your camera to it. very helpful, almost eliminate the need to manually rotate the camera with right stick.

The text in 3ds is HORRIBLE, it's like Capcom never even test the game on 3ds, how can they release the game with text like that.

2 hours away. Nintendo not allowing pre purchases, let alone preloading, is some bullshit

    Excellent!

I managed to play some local Multi with my roommate last night, he was using my Wii u copy while I'm on 3DS. Make sure you do download all of DLC contents, you get 5000 resource points for your village to start as well as event mission.

The event mission you need to kill 20 bullfango(wild boars) without any armor on, that mission is like the only mission you will be able to find bullfango in low tier mission maps. The reward for the mission is amazing too, you can craft either a fire lance or gunlance, the lance is better but you need rathalo material, but for a lance you can get at super low level, it's very very powerful, I don't need to upgrade any weapons even at 7 star Village quest.

The lance and gunlance do look weird, the lance looks like a gunblade, and the gunlance looks like a giant trophy.

Thanks for reminding me about the dlc/event quests. I just got my 3DS copy today, so I've been attempting to figure out what charm table I am on. As long as I'm not on one of the 5 "cursed tables" I'm fine with what I get.

didn't bother with the charm table, having a good charm is nice, but nothing good decoration wouldn't fix.

  25. JRave Hard Cider Gal

I would agree with you, except there is a noticeable difference in some of them. The 5 cursed tables have a total number of charms ranging from 200 to 800 per table. Compared to 21600 total charms in the remaining tables.
The above SS shows how unbalanced and broken things seem to be. Oh and I think a table or two can't even take 3 slot decorations as well.

So, here's a thing: it looks like you don't get a notification when someone tries to add you as a friend on the WiiU. Both participants need to add each other. So, if anyone's added me (Subt3xt) and is wondering why I haven't accepted; that's the answer. Let me know you added me and I'll reciprocate :)

I played just the beginning of this. I just now got my first actual guild quest. Seems pretty interesting so far, though I'm a bit flabbergasted at all the weapon choices, and haven't even looked at the multi so far. I think I'm Astromarine on the WiiU as well, so add me.

I been primary using a lance in solo play, it's easy to use, can cut tail, I don't even have to use potion for most of the monsters with it. but in MP, I been attempting to use a horn. the amount of buff you can give to your teammate is amazing. it even has an +health buff.

Edit: looks like I got charm table 5. it's a regular table, so works.

Got this on the 3DS. It looks and runs better than the Wii version. Still makes no goddamn sense, but maybe this time I'll be able to get into it.

  32. James Johnson Worked The System

Oh? That's kind of disheartening. Is it really that bad in single player?

Is Soul Sacrifice more single-player friendly? I made the mistake of getting a Vita.
  33. fadeaccompli Magister Mundi Elyscape

I've been eyeing the Wii U for reasons of "Well, there are Wii games I want to play, and I might as well get the newer console that's backwards compatible and that some new games will require." And I love the concept of Monster Hunter absolutely to pieces; "Craft everything whatsoever from a zillion animal parts" is high on my list of Fun Things To Do In Video Games. (It is no wonder that Rune Factory is one of my favorite series.)

But... I have the twitch reflexes and hand-eye coordination of a diseased brick. Are there any sorts of difficult settings available? Or, barring that, a multiplayer setup that would let me be a lurching fourth member of a larger party who contributed a tiny bit--or at least contributed more than helping? I hate to think that a game that sounds so much like My Kind Of Thing would be unplayable because of fine motor skills issues, but...that sounds likely, based on info so far.
  34. idris_z I Pretty Much Live Here

it's not bad in SP, you get 2 AI companion to help you out. you get single player campaign that's somewhat integrated with their MP mission hub, but you will miss out around 5-6 monsters if you don't play MP mission, you can solo MP mission, but monster do 2x+ damage as well as having 2.5x more hit points versus the their single player counterpart.

there are 3 tiers of mission, Normal/Hard/G-rank, and G-rank is only available with MP mission, so you miss out on that as well as all the G-rank equipments. I been playing with my roommate, but we can also bring our shakalakas, so that's a party of 4 with 2 AI, we managed to get to G-rank, even with G-rank armors, Monsters like DevilJho 2 shots us...

Soul Sacrifice is almost the same way, but one nice thing about soul sacrifice is that you can go online with PSV without needing PS3, it support both Ad Hoc and online lobby which makes finding people to play much easier.

Capcom improved control a bit in Monster hunter 3 Ultimate by allowing a quick lock-on on big monster, where as before you need to manually adjust the camera to track your foe, now the camera will automatically lock on for like a second whenever you tap the shoulder button.

Also playing lance is pretty easy, you don't need to worry about invincible framing attacks, you get an equipment pretty early on that give you auto guard, so you don't even need to worry about blocking at right time.

That sounds like something I might possibly almost barely be able to do. Oo.

(Of course, I mostly want to get the Wii U for future game opportunities and to go rebuy Chocobo's Dungeon and Rune Factory Frontier, so I still might not be the right target demographic for this. But I can hope!)

Well, you could always play multiplayer and use a hammer horn wielded, who are guys who carry giant ass horns that they use to play music to buff their teammates and occasionally to bash monsters to death with.
  37. Afti Cuts Down The River, Not Across The Road

It's really not that hard. Most of the dangerous situations are telegraphed; if you're observant, you should have plenty of time to react. In my experience, you're never expected to dodge SUDDENLY FIREBALL with one frame of warning.

(Man, I love switch axes. The moveset is really weird and hard to get used to at first, but once you get used to it and you get a feel for when to shift modes, the balance of power/range/mobility is untouchable.)
  38. idris_z I Pretty Much Live Here

most of the move are telegraphed, but there are some chain move where you can't do anything, for example if you are hammering a rathalo's head, you enrage him, he roars, and you have no ear plug, then it's Rage -> Roar -> Fireball right in your face before you can recover from the roar.

the new subspecial monster also have their own attack, like Steel uragaan, roll->chin pound->Gas in the same attack, you might dodge the chin pound, but only get hit by tremor then follow up by the gas attack. Similar with DevilJho, foot stump -> tremor -> body check..
  39. fadeaccompli Magister Mundi Elyscape

...that sounds awesome. See, this is really selling me on the game. Giant buffing-and-smiting horns! That is awesome!

Sadly, "if you're observant" is giving me way too much credit. I gave up on Super Mario Galaxy in screaming frustration.

Well, I just found out that the 3DS version of this has no online multiplayer. There goes my purchase. Monster Hunter without multiplayer is no Monster Hunter at all. Thanks for continuing to fail to realize that the world isn't identical to Japan, Capcom. Thanks a fucking load.
