Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer - I'm still playing it.

I'm actually having anxiety issues about the idea of learning new gameplay mechanics. The same phobia that's stopped me from playing any new games because I don't have time to learn them is rearing its head here as well.

Get RotF at least. There aren't really any new mechanics, just new cards, and you will learn them quickly enough.

But get the expansions already!

I surely am not a Jedi Master with this game.

It's surprisingly deep. I made a big leap in Ascension simply by abstaining from the PLAY ALL button.

How did that improve your gameplay? I typically hit that only when I have the base cards or their upgrades.

Exactly what you said. You time out your plays and your banishments and your draws. Very, very basic, but my win ratio shot up after that.

I can't say with certainty that Stone Blade is going to pull Playdek's Ascension app but I've had some conversations on background that strongly suggest it.

I think you didn't consider how they might monetize those apps. Playdek is enormously fair and benevolent with its traditional base game plus occasional expansions business model. There are many worse alternatives, like charging for (online) plays per day or giving players an advantage who buy more cards.

Ok, well, to be serious, I have not seen a better implementation of a card game on iOS than what Playdek does, and it will be very, very hard for anyone else making the same game to meet expectations.

Crisis averted. It seems like the Playdek iOS app isn't going anywhere, and that Immortal Heroes is definitely coming to iOS. A poorly-worded press release was the culprit here, though there appear to be ongoing conversations between Stone Blade and Playdek about something.

I will say that I'm not necessarily against the idea of Stone Blade building their own iOS app, assuming it is of equal or superior quality to the Playdek one. But that's a tall order. I know how much work it takes to build these things ... it's a significant amount of software development, not to mention the ongoing server side hosting component for multiplayer games.

I wonder why Stone Blade is doing this. My guess is that their profit margins are too slim for their liking on the iOS client, if both Apple and Playdek gets a cut of each sale? Or maybe Playdek is too focused on other games to be able to deliver on the upgrades as fast as SB would like?

I definitely hope they don't go some HTML5 route like Dominions did. Yikes.

DennyA, good game on your 1-point victory! If not for you drawing that Fate card from the Portal deck after acquiring your last card on the final turn that allowed you to gain additional Honor, I would have won. Brutal way for me to lose.

Seriously RyanMM Ascension original is an awful game. It's boring and aggravating. If you think you like the original you really have to buy the expansions. They really elevate the game to a new level.

Still aggravating but not boring :)

But if I buy the expansion I'll have to learn all new cards and strategies. LEARNING IS HARD

Seriously though. Everyone is telling you the expansions are awesome. Why not believe them?

I believe them, I'm just afraid of change. BTW, I hate you so much for getting ALL THE MECHANAS last game. That was painful to watch those come out after my buys so you could easily grab them.

My experience with the original runs as follows:

1) Oh theres no cards I can afford? Guess I'll buy a mystic.
2) Oh my mystic didn't come up and the other guy buyed the banish card? Oh.
3) Oh I haven't gotten a single banish card and now I get a 50-50 mix of Mystics and HI? Oh I guess I'll buy more mystics and kill more cultists.
4) Oh I lost? Oh.

The expansions give you a lot more options and I think give you a fighting chance to make a comeback in almost every game (that does not feature Tyjenks)

Those of you who haven't challenged me (LivinItUpInPhx), yet...what the hell? I have all the expansions, plus the promo pack, so make a guy feel loved, damn it!

No but it's gone when you stop using CoTG.
