I think there's quite a few people here that watch dramas so here's a thread for you to discuss and pimp dramas you like! Also because I want recommendations...

Stuff I'll be listing will likely cater to a younger audience, more "idol drama", so usually rather silly and light. More serious and long ones are welcome too! I just usually have really short attention spans these days.

Japanese dramas: usually 10 - 12 40 mins episodes long. I watch a lot of manga-based dramas, so they range from rom/com, crack to random crime shows.

+ One Litre of Tears - even if you watch nothing else, I recommend this! It's heartbreaking and inspiring. It's about a girl's struggle against an incurable disease.

+ Hana Yori Dango - It's likely you'll know it already but in case you didn't, it's based on one of the most popular shoujo manga and there's 3 other dramas based on it. This one have 2 seasons (9 + 11) and a movie. I love the acting and the effort that went into setting up the setting. It's about a girl who can stand up for herself and her entanglement with the most popular guys in school, who just happen to be from very rich and powerful family.

+ Zettai Kareshi - It's about a girl who accidentally purchased a robot boyfriend. It's really adorable and hilarious. Nighto <3

+ Kindaichi - Crime drama! It just follows Kindaichi Hajime's various misadventure of making people die solving seemingly impossible crime that follows him everywhere. I love it but it also freaks me out really easily.

+ Arakawa Under the Bridge - pure crack. I can't really give a plot because it's all very nonsensical. I would like to add that you can see Oguri Shun as a kappa. and there's a super buff male nun. and a guy that has a star as a head/face. No, seriously.

+ Since this is going to become extra long if I keep going so here's some dramas that I enjoyed that I ramble on more about if you are interested. Jin, Akihabara@Deep, Tantei no Okite, Hotaru no Hikari, IS~Otoko demo Onna demo nai sei, Liar Game, Tantei Gakuen Q (I recommend the manga or anime!),Nodame Cantabile, Kimi wa Petto, Kurosagi, GTO, Hana Kimi, Papa to Musume no Nanokan, Attention Please, Galileo, Maou.

Korean Dramas - usually 16ish 1 hour episodes. I watch far less korean drama because of its tropes. I think it's broken out of them in recent years though.

+ Just going to name some because I haven't watched enough to have favourites. You're Beautiful, Personal Preference, City Hunter, Coffee Prince, My name is Kim Sam Soon, My Girl, Full House, Goong.

Chinese Dramas - I grew up watching HK dramas, now I only occassionally watch Taiwanese ones. I'm not sure if it's possible to find subs of these, but I can try to look for them if you are interested, I just want to get people to know about these dramas~

+ Bump Off Lover (TW) - This is a rare drama that's not a romantic comedy or pure promotional material. It's a thriller where a girl attempts to uncover what had led to her twin sister's suicide.

+ Frog Turn into Prince (TW) - This is an incredibly cliche drama where a guy got into a car accident, lost his memories and started his life again in some small fishing village. What made it remain among my favourites are the vibrant characters and brilliant acting.

+ The Last Breakthrough (HK) - This is a drama about doctors where it starts off with the doctors volunteering in Kenya with an organisation like Doctors Without Borders. It has amazing scenery and I'm mostly in awe with the inspiring attitudes the doctors have.

+ Princess Returning Pearl (CN) - This is rather old (98/99) and long series. I watched the first two seasons and skimmed the third. It was insanely popular. It's very charming, and hilarious but I'm not sure how well it translates to English. It's set in the Qing dynasty and revolves around the fact that Emperor Qianlong had an illegitimate daughter. By chance, said daughter met an orphaned girl while seeking a way into the palace and told her her life story. Orphaned girl subsequently attempt to help, and end up being mistaken as the real princess.

+ Old Time Buddies (HK) - It's some weird parody/comedy of the HK entertainment industry in the 60s/70s, lots of namedropping. There's quite a few songs and dancing and it's overall very ridiculous and over the top.

+ I don't even keep a list of stuff I watched when I was little so no naming series~ (I have a list for tw drama though) But if you give me a genre or something, I can try dig something up.

This thread is just for me <3 My mom loves to bug me to find Chinese dramas for her.

One that I shuffled her way recently is Bu Bu Jing Xin (Startling By Each Step, or Scarlet Heart) where the main character gets hit by a car and put in a coma, and this causes her soul to go back in time to the Qing Dynasty or something. And then she gets caught up in bishie-shuai prince politics, hijinks ensue, etc. etc.

I've only seen the first part of episode 1 myself, but it seemed okay. It's a period drama so I'm expecting, well, melodrama. If nothing else, it'll help with my Chinese...

I actually followed Bu Bu Jing Xin for a while (watched about ten episodes or something thereabouts?). It's not quite so heavy on the drama as you might expect, but given that this is the Qin dynasty and so if this follows real life events at all the bishie princes are all going to kill each other for the throne in the end or something, it'll probably get darker and more melodramatic as time goes on. They do a good job of building up chemistry between the lead and the various princes and it's not like they just magically fall in love with her because she's the lead or because she's pretty or something. I really like the big sister character, but I cannot wrap my head around the fact that she doesn't notice that her little sister has LITERALLY become a whole different person. It's like Yo Jin Bo, come to think of it.

I just finished 1st episode too :D It's been forever since I watched a period drama, I quite like the protag-chan and her sister. One is spunky and the other is caring.

I laughed when I read bishie prince...because I never thought of the princes in drama as bishie, and it just reminds me of voltage. which is..weird.

I want to say, SPOILER I KNOW WHO WINS AND BECOME THE EMPEROR. not sure if I can sit through 35 episodes though.

I'm kind of suspicious because I remember you recommending it because ALL THE TEARS or something. side eyeing you.

This topic was made for me.
I love watching J-Doramas! I like that they're rather short compared to Western series and they really help me improve my language skills.

Things from the last few years I enjoyed:

Yuusha Yoshihiko to Maou no Shiro
Yoshihiko sets out to find a cure for a mysterious disease and to find his father, but ends up saving the whole world instead.
Love love LOVE this one. It's a parody on JRPGs, especially the Dragon Quest series. It's super funny and never takes itself seriously. Yamada Takayuki as Yoshihiko is godly, and so is Sato Jiro as Hotoke. I recommened this to everyone who wants to watch a fun dorama.

Yuusha Yoshihiko to Akuryo no Kagi
Sequel to the above show, just finished airing a month ago. The opening is catchy as hell.

    Atashinchi no Danshi
Chisato lives on the streets, running away from debt collectors that are after her father. One day she runs into a rich guy called Shinzo, who promises to clear her debt if she marries him for a few months until he dies. She agrees and ends up becoming the mother of his six adopted sons, all around her age.
It sounds serious, but it's actually a comedy. I loved all the characters, and the show has some of my favourite actors - Mukai Osamu, Seto Koji and Horikita Maki.

    Go - Himetachi no Sengoku
The Taiga Drama from 2011. Being a Taiga, this one has 46 episodes.
Based on the life of Go-hime, niece of Oda Nobunaga and wife of the second Tokugawa shogun. It's not 100% historically correct, but being a big Sengoku fan, I enjoyed it nontheless. I seriously cried rivers during some episodes.
The décor and clothes are also splendid.

    Hungry!
Eisuke is an extraordinary cook, but his dream was to become a rock star. After his mother dies, however, he decides to take over her restaurant - which his father sold just a few days earlier. Eisuke opens up his own restaurant in an old warehouse, competing for customers against Aso Tokio, the guy who bought his mother's place.
Very fun story, great music, yummy food and a dream cast. Mukai Osamu, Inagaki Goro, Miura Shohei... Ikemen overload right there.
There were hints for a second season and I really, really hope it'll happen!

    Zenkai Girl
Ayukawa Wakaba wants to be a laywer, but instead ends up becoming a nanny, looking after a female laywer's daughter, Hinata. At Hinata's preschool, she meets single father Yamada Sota. Wakaba despises him, because he is everything she's trying not to be.
I really love this show. It makes you go all "d'awwww", just to crush your heart a few minutes later. Very nice romantic comedy.

    Shinsengumi!
2004s Taiga Drama. It's the Shinsengumi, do I really have to say anything about them?

I watched a lot more, but those are the ones can think of right now.

There's this cute Taiwanese drama I want to recommend about this girl who can't keep a boyfriend for more than three months before they dump her. Basically, she ends up meeting this idol and DRAMA HAPPENS. I only got three episodes in, they're all about an hour long, and I think there's twelve, thirteen episodes?

It's called Smiling Pasta or something like that. I am bad at remembering titles. I am sorry.

I seem to love dramas or hate them. I haven't liked any romantic comedies yet. In fact, they tend to make me want to punch myself in the face. (But then again I don't care much for American romcoms either so maybe that's an indication of preference. Or maybe I tried watching the wrong ones.)

There's no romance in these that I can remember but I think there was plenty of UST.
So! Here's what I've liked so far! (It's been a while so let's see what I can remember.)

    1. Orthos no Inu
This story revolves around a lady cop that doesn't completely suck at her job. She ends up meeting a nice guy that can kill anyone with just a touch and an asshole that can heal anyone with just a touch.

    Crazy drama ensues.

This has a bit of a supernatural base to it, but it's more concerned with morality.
It no longer seems to be on dramacrazy but it should be easy to find with a simple google search.

    2. Control
Another story about a lady cop that doesn't completely suck at her job. Despite that she ends up getting shot and transferred to another department. She meets a local professor and they basically solve crimes together.

It's a bit of a Watson and Holmes dynamic.

    3. Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de
Another lady det-okay maybe not a detective yet but she works for the police! And she's the heiress to a gigantic fortune! Unfortunately while this lady has a good heart she isn't the best at this mystery solving deal--unlike her butler.

Much goofier and lighthearted than the other two shows and it's based on a light novel series. It's fun but not quite amazing. I enjoyed it anyway.

    4. Egao no Hosoku
This is not a crime drama!!! Amazing!
A young lady loses her job and hunts for a new one. She ends up taking a temporary position as an assistant to a popular mangaka who is having a little trouble beginning his new series. They stay at an old traditional inn.

This is a tale with strong themes about growing up, learning how to resolve problems, and dealing with setbacks. I had fun watching it even if it occasionally made me want to roll my eyes and the ending made me want to throw a temper tantrum. The ending wasn't bad, in fact it could be argued as being very realistic and open ended, but goddammit I wanted my rainbows and sunshine!

3/4 are crime dramas. I think there might be a clear preference here.
(If anyone knows any good crime dramas then I'm all ears! I'll probably check out Kindaichi recommended in the OP.)

It's very well writen, no propaganda against gays or anything. The broadcast station got a lot of shit for airing it, actually.

I haven't really watched many J-Dramas so I will check these out!

K-Dramas I have watched and liked (also seconding Coffee Prince, it was pretty funny and my first drama):

    1. Cinderella's Sister. It's true, many K-Dramas fall into very stereotypical stories, but I liked the way this one was done. It's about a girl who, once her gold-digging mother remarries yet again, is forced to cope with being the outsider in a 'perfect' family,...that is really nowhere near perfect once you dig a little. (I cried through basically every episode because I am a crybaby and her life was pretty miserable.)

    2. Shining Inheritance. This one has one of my absolute favourite actors, Lee Seung Gi, so I have to recommend it. A man on the verge of bankruptcy fakes his death so that the money will go to his family, but it doesn't go as planned. The stepmother kicks out the man's daughter and autistic son, and that daughter is forced to support the both of them alone. Luckily, she gets some help from an elderly woman, who thinks that this hardworking girl may do her spoiled grandson some good.

    3. King of Baking, Kim Tak Goo. Definitely one of my favourites! I loved a lot of things in this drama, especially the main character. It's a story about a boy who was basically robbed of his rightful inheritance and had to live as a poor boy, and it follows him through his life as he builds his career from scratch instead. (Warning: there are delicious baked goods -mostly bread- in pretty much every episode so don't watch when you're hungry XD)

Watched two episodes of Otomen, Asuka is really cute <3 slightly tired of girl-who-can't-do-girly-things-cos-reasons trope though but it's cute.

Oh, that's disappointing. I'll end up watching it anyways, probably. I watched the conan tanpatsu. so.

Rot: crime drama fan heyyy? from the OP, Gaileo is a crime drama that have crime solved using science! (not forensic, usually physics or highschool science?) Tantei no Okite is essentially a crime drama parody so might be worth checking out. There's also Mr.Brain which just have a lot and lot of well known guest stars..the show itself is decent, but not amazing. There's also BOSS, which has lady cop yay! I watched like 2 episodes 2 years ago, so can't vouch for it though. might pick it up again. maybe.

I've watched that! I quite like protag-chan. I tried to read the manga afterwards but didn't get very far. uh.

Gentle child welfare worker switches body with yakuza. Very funny, and Ayumi is the greatest yakuza wife ever. Matsuda Shota does such a great job, too.
  22. Mind Elemental Hard Cider Gal

Popped into this thread just to give BOSS a shout. :D While on the surface BOSS is a show about cops and criminals, it's a lot goofier at heart. It's really a "watch the wacky misfits gel together into a proper team" story, spiced with elaborate bluffs, implausible pleas, and zany escapes. Lot of fun, if you're looking for something less serious! (I reviewed it in a bit more detail a couple of years ago, if you're interested).

Also, Amami Yuki - the actress plaing the detective protagonist - is gorgeous and awesome and charismatic (and let's gloss over the fact I'm something like 16 or 17 years younger than her, eh heh).

Oh, but uh. Yeah, probably should not have walked into this thread because now I'll probably fall face first into a marathon watching mode. Since, yanno, there's quite a bit I've gleaned from here that just sounds in good taste. Hnrgh. Anyhow! Still on the last episode but rather enjoying Greatest Love aka The Discovery of Affection from the ever diabolical Hong Sisters that created You're Beautiful which is also something I second. Huh, I guess I like the really really weird main actor ones trolololol~ Oh but like, synopsis. So!

And a great many feels were had by all. But honestly, this is a very very punny series as in keeping with tradition and Dorko Jin is...well, he's beyond words. Rather arrogant and off in his own world but lud such a wonder to watch and cackle madly alongside. A pretty intense series, and punchy, for all that it looks short and masquerades as a love comedy. So yeah, that's all I can think of at the moment.

First if you're into high school dramas then Nobuta wo Produce is a great show. I watched it when I first came to Japan and loved it.
I also liked Kekkon Dekinai Otoko which is about a successful architect who is essentially anti-social and a big jerk and of course a love interest develops somehow.
Lastly, if you're into Japanese history, I highly recommend Ryoma Den which is based on the true story of Ryouma (last name escapes me) who was responsible for helping to start the original Japanese modern navy. Very funny and entertaining.
  28. Canuck This Is SEWIOUS

Also it may have been mentioned already and the name escapes me because I didn't really watch it but there was one drama which kind of seemed like a Japanese drama of Mary Poppins where a helper woman who had something horrible happen to her family in the past and no longer smiles anymore comes to help a family where the mother has passed away. I don't know anything more about it other than it was a huge hit and the final episode got the highest viewership record of any show on Japanese TV. I think it had a 40% share of all the people watching TV at the time or something like that.

Oh, and The Moon Embracing The Sun is pretty good, once you get past how annoying the whole 'amnesia' concept is when essentially everyone knows the truth except the main couple. I watched Code Blue season one and really enjoyed it. I'm planning to watch season two at some point. You can find some of them up on YouTube, and I think the rest are on Dailymotion.

I suspect it's not all that different from American Medical Dramas (e.g., ER) although I haven't watched any of them since St Elsewhere (which dates me quite a bit no doubt). But I really enjoyed Code Blue. I'm going to have to get one of my doctor friends to watch it and let me know how realistic the medicine is. The basic premise is that Japan has ER doctors flying on helicopters to handle emergency situations on site (that part at least is actually factually accurate, I don't know how accurate the rest is -- they do a heck of a lot of surgery on accident sites in some very dirty environments, usually under the premise that the patient is stuck and is going to die if action is not taken immediately).

The show is a combination of medical cases combined with personal drama, I'd say maybe 60% medicine / 40% doctor's personal issues. From a medicine and action perspective, I got a real kick out of it every time the alarm when off and they flew off in the helicopter (which usually happens 1-2 times an episode, with a fair bit of non-emergency / non-helicopter medicine to fill in the rest). I generally found all the characters quite likeable, and they did a good job exploring the various characters' personalities and flaws, so I enjoyed that part quite a bit as well.

Unfortunately there's a 2-hour bridge "Special" between the two seasons, but I couldn't find one with English subs. Here it is up on Youtube but with Vietnamese subs :-( Alas my year-and-a-half of Japanese self-study completely failed me on this and I picked up almost none of the Japanese, although the story is more or less followable without actually understanding the words -- not sure what that says about the story. But at least I now know the status of all the major characters before starting season two.

[Sorry for the late reply, I didn't notice this thread until now and in fact didn't know Asian Drama's existed in English subtitled form and were available on the Internet until 2-3 weeks ago!]

    I've watched some weird Dramas.

The God of Study - It's literally a Drama about studying. My mom made me watch this for "motivation".

Kang Suk Ho, a poor lawyer, was called in to help a school that was failing since it had such a bad reputation. Most of the students didn't aspire to reach for higher universities, and mothers were pulling their children out by the droves.
So, Suk Ho makes a bet with the principal, he will take the five worst students, prep them, and help them get into the prestigious Chun-ha university. He has to get all five students in, with unorthodox training, or otherwise he'll never show his face in the area ever again. However, the students all have their own problems.

One has an ill grandmother, the only family he has left, and has no desire to leave her behind to climb the "ladder of his future".
Another is a great artist, however, she'd rather spend her day fantasizing about her crush and small baubles.
Another has no father, and her mother desires a married man. He mother sees no merit in education, telling her that her "slow" mind won't help her in the long run.
Another is the son of a prestigious and rich family. They want him to be a doctor or a lawyer, however all he wants to do is dance.
Another has been bullied for his looks for a long time and it affected his life as a student. He wants to get away from it all and prove others that laughed at him wrong.

I actually cried during this, and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

That reminds me of Dragon Zakura. A friend of mine watched it to inspire her to study. It didn't have much effect on me. It was about five bad students being selected to go into a special program that would guarantee they would get into Tokyo University. It was very specifically tailored with that goal in mind (e.g. focus on Science because it's eaiser to get in that way! or something)

I am screaming because I didn't come here sooner.
I also didn't know that dramas are supposed to be short...why do I always manage to watch the long ones?

    (K) Pink Lipstick - I haven't seen this one in a long time, but it's one of those dramas that starts off with showing you the middle, then goes from the beginning to the middle and then continues. Good when it's done well, but it starts to feel a lot like "oH MY GOD JUST GET TO THE MIDDLE ALREADY", so I highly recommend skipping the first episode, just so that feeling doesn't hit you. It's one of those dramatic romance ones, so get ready to scream in frustration.

    (K) Job Well Done - My most recent addiction! It's about a woman who dated a man, but then the man left and she had his child and started to move on and love someone else, BUT THEN THE MAN CAME BACK ANDDDDDD... Addicting, though also full with "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT" situations. Most of it can be chalked up to cultural differences, but there are some bits where...no. Good though! really good! WATCH IT!

(K-m) 200 Lb Beauty - jesus christ i cried. this is a movie and it's so good and it touched me and I SOBBED. I OPENLY WEPT because it's so touching and anyone that has felt bad about their weight or the way they looked can relate at least a little bit, i just. I JUST. Hhhhhh, definitely, DEFINITELY WORTH WATCHING. GO WATCH IT. GO. SHH, STOP READING THIS GO WATCH IT IT'S ON CRUNCHYROLL.

YAY, Asian Drama Time! I'm super picky and somethings that pull me to certain stories push me away from others.

I'll just leave this here as a record of how much I watch J/K-Dramas:

    (T) Devil Beside You - Based on manga in which a girl about to confess her love towards a senpai accidentally ends up confessing to the resident "bad-boy"/principal's son/step-brother to-be. Silly hijinks ensue!
    (J) Kimi Wa Petto - A successful career woman mocked by others/ex-boyfriend for being emotionally distant/cold (and becomes insecure about it) finds a cute, puppy boy in a cardboard box (so fantasies do come true) who teaches her how to be more confident in herself/ open up to people more. Matsujun!
    (J) Gokusen - Yazuka-born teacher inspires students labelled as deliquents with no potential. Matsujun!
(K)You're Beautiful - Needs no introduction, but I shed drama-tears for the loser of the love triangle. D'awww
    (K) Personal Preference - Woman lives in house built by famous architect father and an architect aspiring to build something like that house tries to get inside to find the blueprints, but has to pretend to be gay to live there.
    (K) Queen In-hyun - (Favourite Drama of 2012) - An actress in a historical drama meets a time-travelling, high-ranking advisor (?) who is in the midst of uncovering a court conspiracy, and they fall in love. I cried.
    (K) My Girlfriend is a Gumiho - A nine-tailed fox escapes from her prison to meet an aspiring stuntman who is in love with an actress (his long-time friend). The hot doctor who wanted to kill the nine-tailed fox ends up trying to protect her as she reminds him of someone from his past.
    (K) Flower Boy Ramyun Shop - It was weird. But kind of cute. But I liked the guy she didn't end up with more because he was the "go with the flow type".
    (K) The Greatest Love - Dokko Jin was awesome and Yoon Pil Joo was adorable. It was difficult to choose.
    (K) Star Candy and Biscuit Teacher - Male student falls in love with female teacher who used to be a delinquent student (or something?)
    (K) I Love Lee Tae-Ri - Boy becomes man overnight and innocently romances an older woman who has hardened her heart against romance. The boy was so adorable in his (sadly one-sided) love for the older rival girl that he made me squee. Yes, I watched for the boy's cuteness (and felt like a cougar).
    (K) Oh! My Lady - A middle-aged housekeeper looks after a spoiled star while taking care of her own child.
    (K) Resurrection - Two twins who were separated during their childhood meet up years later. The father died in a car accident he was in with one twin. The other twin is taken in by the chairman/president of the company and raised to be a successful businessman. The twin who was in the car crash (main character) is adopted by a poor family and becomes an honorable policeman who lives paycheque to paycheque taking care of his adopted sister, who he secretly loves. Gets slow near the end, and I watched because of Uhm- Tae Woong, who I noticed after
    (K) My Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang - Girl meets boy, falls in love with boy, meets man. Man falls in love with girl, who only likes boy. Man resorts to seedy tactics, forces girl to go to his side. Boy mans up and fights to get girl back. In the end, all is forgiven. Uhm Tae-Woong was great in that role and won me over as a fan.
    (K) What's Up Fox - Young man returns from (somewhere, can't remember), reunites with his sister's best friend (an older woman). They reconnect and fall in love, but things happen because this is a drama.
    (K) The King of Dramas - Cold hearted man ruins the career of a hopeful drama writer and ends up causing the death of a man and the destruction of his empire. Years later, he seeks revenge upon his old enemies and people who betrayed him and asks for the writer-turned-waitress' help. Got slow near the end.
    (K) Sign - A forensic doctor takes a trainee under his wing. Together, they solve crimes, right up to the bitter end.

The most recent drama I watched that I liked was: (J) Saki - A mysterious woman steps into a young publisher's life and wreaks havoc on his associates while destroying the lives of those around her. What is her motive for doing so, and what is her true connection to him?

Most Recent Dramas that I gave up half-way or thought were a waste of time:

Faith, Prosecutor Princess, A Gentleman's Dignity, Oh! My Sweetheart, Arang and the Magistrate, Take Care of the Young Lady, A Millionaire's First Love, Coffee Prince, Playful Kiss, Big (Lee Tae-Ri was better), Shining Inheritance, My Girl, Ouran Host, Lie To Me, My Princess, Rooftop-Prince, Secret Garden, Mary Stayed Out All Night, King 2 Hearts, Myung Wol the Spy, City Hunter...and the list goes on.
