And now, the final installment of "I Am A Horrible Person": with Masaki's BF mode confirmed to be a bust, Masaki still hanging around determinedly in tokimeki mode despite Ayu repeatedly shutting down his date invitations, and the end of the game looming near, I made the difficult decision to have Ayu quit her job at Anneri and focus those two days a week on making Club Master of the baseball club and otherwise working stats up for final exams.

Normally this would be an only slightly uncomfortable two-line conversation with the faceless manager of the workplace in question, but...

Ayu awkwardly explains why she's calling.



Ayu: "......Sorry..."
Masaki: "...Do you have to quit?"
Ayu: "Yes... I've thought a lot about it."
Masaki: "...Okay, I get it!"



Masaki: "Come in for a chat whenever you want. If I'm free, I'll hang out with you."
Ayu: "Yes. I will do that."
Masaki: "You've worked hard."
Ayu: "Thanks for... everything."
Masaki: "...Yeah. Later."

Waa only now I notice that this thread is doing the same route I'm playing too, dating Shiba but also going out with Masaki... I love them both ç____ç But anyway, does anybody know if you can BF Masaki? Because I'm keep having dates with Shiba in two consecutives sundays but the BF events doesn't show up, it because masaki affection is too high? :/

You can only activate the Best Friend event starting from halfway through the second year, I believe. You also need to have had the accidental kiss with Masaki, and both of them have to be at :) or :D, no tokimeki! Then you schedule two consecutive dates with Shiba and be careful not to get Love Mode on the second one.

Ok, so I won't be able to get the BF option with Masaki... too bad :/ I guess I'll just do Shiba's route and then Masaki's route with BF Shiba. But really you have to give the accidental kiss to the person you plan on "BFing"? Because in the walkthrough I'm following it doesn't say that °°

Reports have conflicted on whether the accidental kiss is required or not. I tried to activate Masaki's BF route in this playthrough, having gotten Shiba's accidental kiss, but it's possible I messed up something else - the last time or so I tried scheduling back-to-back dates with Shiba, they were both already at tokimeki state, for example.

It's also not possible to romance Masaki and another guy and make the other guy the BF because Masaki won't ever schedule dates back to back and you can't call him to ask him out.

Mmhm, I only read about it in the Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side Livejournal community, so I'm not sure if it's true, but Masaki's BF confession ending had a reference to the accidental kiss, I believe...?

You know I decided I love both Shiba and Masaki, but in a different way. Shiba is definitely hotter, but with his attitude I can't think our love can last for long, so I'll have him just for the sex (I love the things he says after the love mode, he really wants to "jump" on you XD). Masaki is much more reliable and funny, I can see him as my lover forever <333333

As painful as that was, let's not forget: Shiba's still here to console us.

He asked to go to the aquarium again, and since he was so fond of the whale shark last time...



Ayu agrees that it might be a very difficult job.



During the subsequent skinship opportunity, just for the hell of it I tried touching his lips. This is the reaction that I got:

Ayu calls Saeki up after this to ask him out, and because he hasn't had his fill of sulking yet he turns her down, which is just fine.



...Amachi, on the other hand, appears to have been inventing scenarios in his head that I'm not sure I want to know more about. You haven't gone out on a single date with her, Amachi!



Shiba senses her discomfort, but Ayu assures him that everything's fine.

At the next opportunity she calls Amachi before this can get any weirder. Since he's got cheer club practice on the third Sunday of the month, the bomb is defused without actually requiring a date. Of course, it means he'll bomb her again more quickly, but what do we care, it's already December.

(If it seems like we missed Shiba's birthday, it's only because nothing much of interest happened. Ayu got him a mesh shirt, and he was happy about it, but the dialogue was the same as the last two years.)



Exams. Ayu's ranking has nudged up slightly, but not really enough to signify and I'm not going to worry about it that much at this point. Making club master of the baseball team will be enough for me.

New and slightly less unfortunate furisode bought during the December 23rd sale, and then it's time for the Christmas party!

For the third year, unlike previous years, the party is actually a two-day ski trip, very exciting.



V. Principal: "However, no matter how special it is, do not slip away from this place!"

Translation: no sneaking off to make out. Darn it.

V. Principal: "Is that okay? Then, let's make a toast! Merry Christmas!"

Ayu and Chiyomki meet up and exchange the customary greeting and compliments over one another's dresses, and...



Ayu: "Yeah. Are you, Katsumi?"

The gift exchange commences, and because TokiMemo boys don't care about variety in their gifts, Shiba gets a room stepper for the third year in a row and is just as happy with it as he was the first time. Shiba's still not the best around at selecting gifts himself: Ayu gets a Christmas cake plush toy, which he says he selected with her in mind.

I am not really sure what that's supposed to signify, but it's cute. XD

If she were a little older, that could have been considered rude.

But I don't think they use the term as much anymore.

Ayu: (Katsumi... what is he doing over there?)



Aw, punkin. :c Concerned, Ayu suggests that maybe he should sit down.



Ayu: "Are you okay?"
Shiba: "...Somewhat."



Shiba: "As expected... I just can't get used to this kinda place."

Shiba feels out of place at the party, and admits that three years ago he'd never have come to this kind of thing, even for a school event.

Ayu does the math: "Meaning, your third year of middle school?"

Shiba: "Yeah. I didn't attend the culture festivals or any other events."







Shiba: "They said things like 'It's obvious the one who's wrong is the pitcher,' and they didn't blame me... But it was painful to see those guys force a smile. So I ran away."



Shiba: "As expected, no one talks about that time. But they smile as they talk about baseball. They crack jokes and they still pat me on the back."



Shiba: "...Thanks, Ayu. I've remembered many things because of you."



Shiba: "If you weren't here, I'd never think about coming to this kinda party."



Ayu: "Should I get you something to drink?"







This is especially adorable because he says it in English, which he claimed at the first-year party that he couldn't pronounce. Aw, Shiba. <3

As I said before, the accidental kiss is required with the guy you want to BF mode, at least in TMGS2. It's probably different in TMGS1 because there wasn't that mechanic.

We played with Masaki's heart for nothing. ;_;

Maybe the sempai he's referring to here is Shiba.

Putting in my two cents, Shiba's a nice guy, but he's more the "kuudere" or "defrosting ice queen" route than the nice guy route. That said, I really don't mind nice guy routes and tend to like them even when others might find them boring. I mean, I adore Sakuya and I enjoyed Tamao's route which, granted, I can't pass final judgement on yet because my Japanese isn't that great. Both of their routes could be said to be kind of "boring" because they don't really have much in the way of a gimmick. Sakuya has things like loving flowers, overcoming shyness, and defying familial pressures in order to follow your dreams and Tamao has things like being older than you, loving trains, and learning how to be okay with standing up for yourself and disappointing people, but these aren't really gimmicks of the kind that some of the other characters have (such as Kazuki being a "prince", childhood friend, and a kuudere or Shizuka being a tsundere, etc.) However, I never really found the routes to be boring or that their kindness meant they didn't treat you special. Because they did, it was you they were willing to change for.

I didn't really have the same feelings about Masaki, as sweet as he is, and there are probably a few reasons for this. One of them might be that he has far too many car dates (which are kind of lame, to be honest) or it could be that the focus on the age difference is too much for how small the actual difference is. However, I suspect that it's because there isn't enough difference in him between the beginning and end of the route and because his abundance of car CGs just doesn't allow for as much character development. It makes you feel like you don't have as much affect on his life as you do for some of the other guys.

Or, you know, maybe he's musing to himself about Haruhi~ Haruhi and Amachi are my OTP forever and ever and ever~

I think Tamao gets a mildly more nuanced picture from the context of being Tamami's little bro, Tsukushi's childhood friend, Seiji's best friend and someone who was in the Student Council when Akagi was anyways. In some sense it's that context that makes me feel fond of him. Plus appearance-wise Tamao hits that sweet spot of boy-next-door for me that sits between "too pretty" and "too macho".

I've just finished playing the Shiba/Masaki BF route, and I think having Masaki as the BF is a bit tricky. I did use the same walkthrough that Antiqua mentioned in here, eventhough at first I aimed Shiba as my BF not Masaki. But it turned out I got the opposite, it was Masaki as the BF instead. In some ways, I feel lucky that I could have his BF route...but rejecting Shiba was too much for me :'( (don't even remind me how horrible it felt, looking at his expression after being rejected... (T^T)).

Anyway, I think the tricky part with this route is, because we can't determine when Masaki will ask us to get a date. If you want to have Masaki as the BF, that means you have to have 2 dates with him, more or less, in a row. I ended up having him as my BF because I dated Shiba twice in between 8 days, and that was unintentionally.

As for affection, I don't think it's matter...just as long as the two guys are in the same state (either smiling, grinning or tokimeki). Also having accidental kiss isn't a requirement for the BF, I think. But being said that, I shared the accidental kiss with Masaki instead Shiba. Xd

Pretty sure you can never use Masaki as your number one guy (aka the one who's gonna get dumped) in the BF scenario because he only asks you out every other week at most, and to make the BF event occur you need to date the same guy over the span of eight days, which isn't even a week.

Yeah, it's basically impossible to have Wakaouji or Masaki as your bait in the BF scenario. Which makes a strange kind of sense when you think about both of them being older than Protag-chan, and thus liable to go "Well, I guess she should go be happy with someone closer to her age. ;_;"

Also, I honestly feel much worse about the BF system than the 3P routes of TMGS3. BF system's literally predicated on stringing some poor sap along for at least a year, to the point where he pours his heart out to you on Christmas, only for you to reject him at the chapel/lighthouse in order to go have a non-kiss ending with your best friend who you never told your feelings shifted towards until then. Even compared to PvP it's a dick move, because at least with PvP both parties end up knowing what's going on and you can still salvage that 3P triangle if you choose right.

I feel like such a heart breaker now! ;A; I'm so sorry Masaki! To make up for what happened, we'll just play your route next!
