shift6, I think you left all of your booze here. :P But goddamn that was a fun party. Thanks for showing up, everyone; looking forward to the next one, even if Alligator and her +1 won't be there!
You may call me... Natasha. Doh! Hahaha, well shit. I guess I won't have to haul it around next time. There should be a pink&white wine box that I brought it all in, you can store them in that if it helps. Alternately decorate your board game cabinet. (by the way Ghost Stories is awesome)
Hey Guise! What's going on in here!? So, uhm, yeah, we opened a videogame museum in Oakland. It's small, we've been open for a year, and we're hoping to build it into something massive over the next decade. For now, though, we host playable exhibits of important works, and we host free programming classes for kids on the weekends. Sorry for the derail, but I wanted to reach out to this forum to invite everyone to visit the Museum, to come to things like our Interactive Fiction club, which meets this Saturday at noon, and most importantly, to offer the MADE as a space for LAN gaming. Back at QT3 the mention of LAN gaming caused people to have hissy fits and complain that it was not possible to make LAN parties work. Well, new forum, new attempt. I'd love to get a monthly LAN meetup at the MADE. Anyway, I'll post a self-pimping thread about the Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment in the gaming forum when my new-ness wears off, but I wanted to pop into this local thread and tell you about us. We're a non-profit, and we're entirely volunteer run. Come say hi some time!
Fuck them, LAN parties are awesome! The problem with LAN parties is disparate skill levels. Which is why the traditional fix is to either play a game that nobody is good at, or just to be careful about arranging teams or seeding tournament-style play so that everyone has a fun time. PROBLEM SOLVED. Also, you didn't include a link to your website, for people who want their eyes to bleed (I kid, but seriously, get a copyeditor, you have spelling and grammar errors).
Oh shit, sorry, thought I did. Maybe as a newb, the forum filters out URLS? http://www.themade.org Oh, and the skill thing is why I always ended up playing Serious Sam or something cooperative whenever we LAN'd. Icewind Dale was always fun. A Bridge Too Far? This is a museum, after all, so we should think of some great old PC games. Sacrifice anyone?
Can that be played Multiplayer? If we're counting third party mods for old games, that opens up an even larger door. Someone take charge of this planning and such, then I'll consult on scheduling a day at the MADE.
System Shock 2 does, in fact, have multiplayer, and I think out of the box it supports 4 players (I'm not sure about that; I know I've played it with 3). Another good multiplayer game is Majesty (or its expansion), which similarly is fun to play MP even if there's a vast difference in skill levels. In the subject of multiplayer games, what I would fucking love to do is have a co-op "no replaying levels" tournament of sorts (see how far you get before you TPK) for Gauntlet: Dark Legacy (I believe I actually own a copy of it, and managed to get it working on my XBOX360 before we moved, but I uh changed that because I wanted to go back to having it compatible with XBox Live, so we would need an original XBOX). With enough people, such a tournament could either be played in parallel (multiple XBOXes with multiple teams) or in serial, with teams that aren't up playing other games. Diablo II is another game that can be made very LAN-friendly, and for additional fun you can play it on Hardcore so that there's an influx of either new players (when someone dies) or new characters (when someone dies) to keep things spiced up. There are easily a dozen Steam games (CK2, Altitude, Awesomenauts, Alien Swarm, Tower Wars, etc) that have solid multiplayer modes. And of course, people who want to can team up in DotA2, League of Legends, or other MOBAs and queue as a team with bonus added ability to yell at each other. "Noooo, why did you kill steal!" "KS stands for kill SECURED! Muahaha!" etc.
There's a never-ending supply of possibilities! Plus, the museum already has all the old consoles. We even have Bomberman Saturn with the 10 player adapter, though we are a few Saturn controllers short. This LAN party would work best if we picked a day of the month. Call it 3rd Sunday or 2nd Sunday or something. Sundays would be best. The museum is open from noon until 6 PM Sundays, and if we do this a few times and someone here takes charge of organizing it and keeping in contact with the participants, I can hand over keys for later hours. The toughest part is going to be coordinating everyone's schedules. You think we can organize something for February.
fire is leaving a week from tomorrow. It is therefore vital that we meet up before then. To this end, I propose that people congregate at my place this coming Saturday. I have video games and a hugenormous television, lots of extra space for people to crash, and am conveniently located right next to a dog park (and also a bunch of public transit). Who can come?
Depending on what combination of Aaron, myself, and our roommate are still sick, we'll hopefully be there. :)
It occurs to me that the responsible thing to do would be to make sure that fire can even come on Saturday.
my body longs to join you. i will send my spirit instead. if you see a floating glass, pour something in there. be nice.
Jaakusan was here last time, or so I am informed. (I keep confusing her with JuriaAAshen, because brains.)
Nevermind, I just noticed fire was the one who started the moving to LA thread. Research answers all my questions! Hello to fire anyway. <3
I have a blood bowl game that day (shut up, it's IMPRTANT as IainC will testify) but I dunno what else, it sort of depends on if Ingmar is feeling brave since I am a pussy who is skeered to meet people without him :P
Can has. Also paging FrankA in case he's still in the bay area? Also Case and VonGuard and... hmm there are others but I can't remember. Typing is back post-sake/vodka/plum wine, but memory banks are still offline captain and we are unable to re-route power from the bladder even though it is operating at 100% efficiency. Goddamnit it RyanMM this is your time, man! Get your ass on a plane. You can catch up on writing them mothafuckin' invoices during the flight.
I'm in if you'll have me. I can bring whisky, lots of board games, and all the dog hair in the world.
Not sure I can make it, since I've been out of the house the last several weekends and need to catch up on stuff around the house. But a location and time would be nice. If you need some LAN party advice, I've been running a small weekly LAN party for the last decade. We've found co-op games to be great when new people show up. On a related note, I host a twice-monthly board game meetup. (Info here: http://www.meetup.com/silicon-valley-tabletop-games/) if any of y'all want to come, just give me a heads up.
