It's that shit-eating grin and perfect teeth. Combined with his hilarious gaffes he does sound that wife-beater wearing, womanizing, hard-drinkin' trashy uncle everyone seems to have. It's also the complete opposite of his insider DC reputation, which is of a foreign policy expert grind. The first link here has fun:

That's one of my favorite Onion stories ever, and my favorite detail in it is that among the trash he finds under the car seats is Senate bill S. 486, which turns out to be the "Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation Act of 1999".
