I never watched that movie, only the one with Stallone from the early nineties, of which I remember nothing. I would never watch modern Hollywood movies anyway, they are celebrations of unscriptural values rubbed in your face, and all around trashy, valueless, devoid of imagination and depth, and utterly forgettable. There's a lot of that in games, you might say, but it is far less preponderant and more mindless, and at least games allow you to escape the narrative, and are mostly about skill, resource management and strategizing.

Anyway here is a new update:

"celebrations of unscriptural values rubbed in your face" sounds like a pretty good time, all things considered.

Not like Grimoire, where you'll spend 600 hours looking for a creepy space baby, just like the scriptures intended.

Ahhhhh, I'm just kidding. You'll never actually play Grimoire.

Was hhr's last post showing up as being from 12/31/1969 a meta joke or a temporary forum hiccup? It seems to be fixed now.

I am looking forward to it, like I said, because of the puzzles, strategic combat, skills system, creativity, exploration, and sheer sense of wonder. Cleve cites his main inspirations as Wizardry VII, World of Xeen, and Lands of Lore, three excellent titles that have these former elements which modern games are simply missing. I think there was also a sense of innocence in the medium that we have progressively lost.

And it seems like Cleve has given a lot of thought to various elements in the game and to the setting, according to his RPGCodex interview, so I am curious to see how it will pan out. What I've seen of the gameplay snippets so far definitely has me sold.

I definitely have every intention to try out the demo as soon as it is released, and then to pre-order a copy if it is to my liking.

There's his out. A true 'thal like him wouldn't release anything other than pure perfection.

And you think Cleve somehow has the talent and/or ability to match up to those claimed influences without any shred of proof because...?

The fact that HHR gets excited by what is to programming documentation what Timecube is to physics papers is endlessly hilarious to me.

Especially when your partner rubs unscriptural values in your face. So good.

    i dont wanna alarm nobody

    but i dled the demo

    and i instantly became a post-human superman

so vast was my strength that inanimate objects quailed before my gaze shattering lest they incur my extranormal wrath

so great my virility that just installing the demo made everyone within fifty feet of me pregnant. including the guy who sits across from me and some ducks that were crossing the street.

right now i am communicating with other demo dlers using internet 7, a resonant form of psychic internet accessed only by those with active sahasrara chakra allowing them to divert their prana through the paths of sephirot and access the infinity of ain sof

    all that bein said

    these graphics are hella poopy

Until this morning I had never heard of this man or his crazy white whale of a project. I have just spent a very entertaining hour.

Wait, there are framerate issues in a seventeen year old game?

Is this programmed by Cleve Blakemore or something?

Doesn't it though?!? As another recent convert, I know that feel bro.

EDIT: Definitely read his blog if you haven't already. The Grimoire stuff is just the tip of the iceberg.
  27. madkevin Despondent Fancybear

Man, whatever. That's just more proof that Cleve's genius is utterly alien to modern programmers. Now, if you'll excuse me, I just discovered that if I turn off my do-not-disturb button on my office phone it eliminates 50% of the buffer overcalls and improves phone performance by eighteen thousand percent.

Your puny human mind can barely begin to fathom the number of vertices supported by this new 2D sprites paradigm. Your cro-magnon bits will blit themselves into sheer alien awesomeness by ramming themselves into new titanium-encrusted video algorithms.

I'm pretty sure Cleve Blakemore mind controlled Jesse Schell with his neanderthal powers : demos are bad for sales, you heard it from the guy ranting at Dice, so of course Grimoire won't have a demo now.
  30. madkevin Despondent Fancybear

You know, even after all of this, I still really want Grimoire to come out. Not because I want to play it, because it looks horrible. Rather, I really want to see Cleve set up some bc3000ad style site and answer tech support questions. That, my friends, will be internet comedy gold.
  31. JoshV Keeper of the Elemental Materials

I want to see someone do a LP of the demo.

Hypothetical scenario – Cleve not only releases Grimoire, but it gets solid reviews as a classic CRPG in the Wizardry style. Can you get past the years of Blakemore rantings, the bizarre racist conspiracies, etc and buy the game? People like me who actually played and enjoyed the old games are the target demographic for something like this, but I don’t know if I could stomach giving money to someone like that even if the game itself is great.

Nope. It's not like there aren't other games to play that AREN'T made by crazy homophobic racists.
  35. Macheath I Pretty Much Live Here

    That's an extremely hypothetical scenario.
  36. Hanacker Armchair Designer

I think someone needs to set up a Kickstarter to send Cleve back in time 17 years to forever fix framerate problems in games.

Also, there are nuclear bombs hidden in every major population center, that will simultaneously detonate within hours. The only way to defuse them is if you buy Grimoire. (Most of the framerate issues are due to the very complicated coding that constantly checks to see if the player is the one that'll determine whether the Grimoire botnet will broadcast the disarm codes.) WHAT DOES YOUR BLEEDING HEART SAY NOW, HOMO SAP?!

Well, he has had 17 years to give a lot of thought to various game elements and the setting.

As for the sense of innocence: not sure what that means. I remember the wonder and awe back in the 1980s when I first took off in a stick-frame flight sim on a black and white 10x10 square matrix that represented the ground, and the wonder and awe of Akalabeth (the predecessor to the Ultima games) at actually being in a 3D wire frame dungeon with static monsters that moved at 1 FPS. But that doesn't mean I want to play those games again, nor that they are better than, say, MS FSX or Skyrim.
