The worst #1 of the BCS era? Probably. Typical Notre Dame- easy wins from a patsy schedule and a couple lucky breaks.
  2. Hanacker Armchair Designer

It's kind of amazing that Ohio State is undefeated and as far as I can tell, nobody cares. They can't even get a #2 spot in the AP poll.

What an awful Rutgers chokejob that was. Especially at the end there.
  4. CheesyPoof Armchair Designer

    It was a disgrace! Ugh.
  5. Sarkus Hard Cider Gal

They could still end up #1 in the end if both ND and whomever (Bama or Georgia) look bad in the title game.
  6. So Arkansas hires Bret Bielema. The current reaction down here ranges from "Interesting hire" to "Who the fuck is Bret Bielema?"

So Wisconsin fans, does this guy ride motorcycles? Anything like a decent coach?

I don't understand what went wrong! Notre Dame looked so good against Boston College and Navy.

    Gag.

Curse you college football for making me root for Saban.

Amount of surprise that something associated with Notre Dame is a fraud = absolutely none.
  11. Sarkus Hard Cider Gal

Te'o has put out a statement now where he characterizes the relationship as being "online" and phone only, which is contrary to numerous interviews he made earlier where he mentioned face to face contact. He was clearly involved.

He needs to admit he was in on the hoax, say it started off funny and spiraled out of control, and that he's really sorry about the whole thing, ASAP.

  13. Yeah, if you take Notre Dame's and Te'o's statements today at face value, either he was lying then or he's lying now.

It's frankly bizarre all around. The Deadspin guys should get a lot of credit for this.

This may be the most bizarre story I've heard of recently...
  15. jerri blank Despondent Fancybear

Anyone else think he was having an honest-to-goodness same-sex relationship, and the boyfriend was pretending to be a girl online to give him cover? This story confuses me a bit, so I may have missed something that would answer my question.

  16. At this point, anything is possible.

As an aside, I played college football with Mike Tuiasosopo. They (the Tuiasosopos to be clear) are a huge, both in numbers and in stature, Samoan football playing clan.

Maybe it's just because this is following on the heels of the Belcher murder/suicide, and the Newtown shooting, and the Lance Armstrong stuff, but this story just chips away a little further at my faith in humanity.

Let's pretend for a minute that the ND kid really is innocent. Why would someone do this? Was he targeted by some Notre Dame hater? And on the day his grandmother died, they decided *that* was the time to tell him his GF was dead, too? That's some seriously sociopathic, fucked-up shit.

Or the more likely alternative, as most people believe, that the kid was in on the hoax. So you've got this all-star football player who apparently spent months laying the groundwork for this story, leveraged his grandmother's death for maximum emotional effect, and stared right into TV cameras lying to the world about this wonderful girl who never existed.

    Jesus fucking christ. People suck.

    Well somebody met her apparently.

  19. Sluggo Level 90 Paladin

Who does he think he met? The girl named Kekua, or the girl from the photos, who we're being told is someone else altogether? Can someone ask him that?

This story is just bizarre. Every time new info surfaces, it makes things more confusing. It's like a sports show written by JJ Abrams.

The thing is that even if you think Manti Te'o was duped, you have to then admit he lied because he all but admitted in his statement to exagerrating the relationship. And the family backed up the deeper parts of the relationship, confirming that she had visited him in Hawaii while he was home with his family. How the hell does that happen unless there is an actual person posing as this woman? And if that is not the woman who's photos were out there (the woman Deadspin identified as being the real woman in the photos says she's never met Manti Te'o), how did Manti Te'o not notice that?
  21. Sluggo Level 90 Paladin

I'm waiting for the part where a picture surfaces of the two of them in Hawaii, in front of the hatch from LOST.

  22. secretary This Is SEWIOUS

I came up with the same theory pretty much immediately. He's Mormon, so he would have a lot of incentive even outside of the football culture to keep his orientation a secret. I could see this as a situation where it started out as a small lie "oh sure, I have a girlfriend," and snowballed as he got famous. It's a little bit more of a sympathetic read, but then why kill off your imaginary beard in such a dramatic fashion? He'd already told a big whopper about her being in a car accident, so I guess the only other cause of death he could think of was cancer?
  23. Maybe he "killed her off" around the same time his grandmother died in an effort to muddy the waters and keep questions about her to a minimum. What he underestimated was the Notre Dame myth making machinery both at Notre Dame and within the national media. Being the best player on an undefeated ND team with a human interest story = Sports Illustrated cover story.
Remember these are 20 year old knuckle heads, not master minds. Whatever the reason for its existence, the Sports Media should be ashamed.

Next Deadspin will tell us AJ McCarron's girlfriend is a hologram.

  24. The article makes it clear the woman in the picture is a real person. A high school acquaintance of Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, "Reba". She claims he asked her to hold a sign and take a picture but didn't know what for and she is surprised as anyone about this.

Mauia could have met "Reba" (the quote above doesn't make it clear he met the "dead" girlfriend) or he is providing cover or, "Reba" was in on the hoax.

My quote was from an ESPN article that says that Cards FB met the non-existent GF in Samoa during charity work. But he also said this was before Te'o and her got together since it was in 2011 which would make no sense. Since Te'o relationship claim it has been 2-3 year relationship. So somebody was either playing a hoax on them too, he was mistaken about who he met or he was trying to help cover up the lie for Te'o too.
  26. Sluggo Level 90 Paladin

Out here in Los Angeles, the local news shows have reporters doing remotes camped out on the street where Tuiasosopo supposedly lives, with no sign of the guy. This is just getting started.

And draft potential which is why it's as big a story as it is. It raises questions about his character and maturity. Everything is scrutinize and over-analyzed. Nobody would care if he was going to be some late round pick but as a potential 1st round pick if not top five or ten pick it's going to attract a lot of attention. But I agree the coverage is way way too much.
  35. Hanacker Armchair Designer

Has Clowney hinted anything about sitting out next year or is that entirely media speculation?
  36. Why are they speculating that?

EDIT: I get the gist - Clowney should sit out his Jr year, saving his body and still be the No 1 draft pick.

Has he said anything or is this just a way for the media to critiize the NCAA. The three year rule for the NFL is super shitty, as the one year rule is for the NBA, shitty for the players of course, the NCAA makes out like bandits on the backs of their slaves players.

Yeah, that was my question. Also, your link is broken. Almost every major sports site has given their opinion on the matter, but unless I'm missing something it seems to be idle speculation stemming from something a newspaper columnist brought up. I'd loooovve it if he did, as a big Fuck You to the corrupt NCAA, but I don't see it happening.

  38. Thanks, I fixed it.(I hope)

Clowney is the No1 pick this year or next, which is worth 40 Million-ish vs the risk of playing another year at South Carolina for free. Watching his team mate Marcus Lattimore carted off the field with his knee in tatters had to have made an impact on Clowney.

There is the other recent example of Freshman Nerlens Noel tearing up his knee.

It stemmed from a column written by a local journalist. But both his coach and his mom (lol) say they expect him to play.

I heard an interview with Bill Polian and he made the point that sitting out a year has damaged draft stock in the past as while you can work out and be in great shape, sitting out means your football skills will degrade. He gave the example of USC WR Mike Williams who dropped from a potential top 3 pick to 10th.
