That episode was awesome. I guess I'm amazed this kind of thing doesn't happen more often. What was remarkable was that nobody up and left or got their lights punched out. I have been skipping most of the YMIW, a bit of Pete Holmes burn-out, but the live ones are usually pretty good, as the comedians have a chance to play off someone other than Pete, who is really mostly interested in talking about Pete. I really really liked the Clerks voicemails, pretty easy to imagine how excited they must have been to be receiving all that attention. I don't know why but Emo Kev cracks me up to no end. Smodcast is a good one for doing yard work as its pretty easy to not really listen to big swaths of it, take that as you will.
I saw a bit of Shumer's latest, and yes, the idea that she is a desperate is ridiculous. It is also just her act. Pretty sure all Shumer needs to do is look at how successful Chelsey Lately's has been with her "I'm a very pretty drunken bimbo." act and do the math. I don't think she suffers from self esteem issues. After all, she recently dumped Dolph Ziggler, who had pursued her....
God damn, but this CBB with Amy Poehler and Jason Mantzoukas is good. I think my favorite part so far has been the Lightning Quiz, but James Adomian's character's interactions with Amy have been priceless.
The trick of throwing and extra "L" into words had me gasping I was laughing so hard. I wonder how it plays with people not aware of the loathsome Tom Leykis.
Perfectly well, cos I never heard of the guy but found the routine hilarious. Looking up Tom Leykis on Wikipedia makes me okay with never having heard of him.
James Adomian is a genius. The latest episode, with BJ Novak, Wyatt Cenac and Key & Peele, is also pretty good. Love me some K&P.
If you're a Chris Elliot fan - and God only knows why you wouldn't be - then you need to hear last week's The Best Show On WFMU. Chris Elliot and Adam Resnick are in the studio for the whole three hours, and they get into incredible detail on the making of Get A Life and the utterly baffling Cabin Boy. It's literally one of the best interviews I've ever heard.
The season finale of The Pod F Tompkast absolutely knocked it out of the park. I always love Advice for the Probably Dead, but I was dying as Paul showed near-admiration for the effort a 1970s era perv put into his creeping. The segment around freeing Jen Kirkman from the internet was great as well. And, uh, STEP TO ME WITH PIE AND I'LL HAVE TA BOOTCHA! Oh yeah, an' I can see da futcha.
Doug Loves Movies has been a nice roll lately, too. There's an amazing eppy from a couple of weeks ago with Tig Notaro, Nick Kroll, Kurt Metzger and first-timer John Hodgman, who's exactly as good at The Leonard Maltin game as you'd expect.
Jesus the Pod F Tomkast is too funny. Makes me feel like a crazy cackling in my room alone with headphones on.
I downloaded the first episode Brian Posehn's new podcast, Nerd Poker. The concept is that you're sitting in on D&D sessions with Brian Posehn's group. It's not bad, but ultimately it is just about as funny as hanging out with any D&D group is. Maybe it'll get better as the group gets more comfortable with being recorded. It does make me miss the yearly official D&D podcasts with Gabe, Tycho, Scott Kurtz and Wil Wheaton, which I always enjoyed. Also, goddam, the whole Jeshirts.com thing is killing me.
Oh, and by the way... NEW SUPEREGO EPPY CAME OUT THIS WEEK! Not only that, Rob Delaney almost steals the episode.
Just got back from seeing Hardwick do standup here in Nashville. Good show. If he comes to your town, you should check him out. He was working on new material, but I'd say 75% of the show was crowdwork.
It's time to womp up the jamz, motherlovers! Coming to you live from the Marina Del Rey Public Library Marissa Wompler and Miss Listler bring you the Christmas Womptacular!
May I just say, this might be the funniest thing I have heard out of Earwolf, ever. And I am a huge CBB fan... Part of me wishes this was a regular podcast, and the other part of me knows that the quality could only drop if they tried to do it weekly...
I think I would quickly get tired of a podcast that relied on characters and only characters week after week. There needs to be some reality in there for it to work for me. But that was pretty damn Womptacular.
Is it just me, or are all the best comedy duos out there right now women? There's Jessica St. Clair/Lennon Parham, Jamie Denbo/Jessica Chaffin (Ronna & Beverly) and Garfunkel & Oates, to name but a few. Can't wait to hear the Womptacular plus other stuff I've been saving for my drive to see my family on Sunday.
Just listened to the CBB Christmas special. Fucking killed. I am not a fan of Matt Besser's comedy, but I could listen to him as Bjork any time. And goddam, I just love Harris Wittels. The Womptacular was fun, but I donno if they might not have done the characters a disservice by giving voice to Gutterballs and Seth. I love Jason Mantzoukas just about any time, but the problem with Gutterman was that it was mostly just Mantzoukas playing himself.
I actually thought Mantzoukas did a great job of restraining his normal instinct to be over the top. I am not sure whether I would want him on with Wompler every time, but as a once off, I liked both characters.
I really liked this one, I've been prostrate with illness and this is a perfect listen whilst fading in and out of fevery consciousness. Kinda makes me want to dip my toe back in. Thanks.
He did it again! This one had me crying. Holy crap. I've always found Doug's irritation with people not playing the game and following the rules hilarious and he begins this show irritated. It is only undermined by the fact that he knew going in he wasn't going to get anything done and he pretty much just lets the three of them bounce off each other.
After resuming regular podcasts over the last few months, You Look Nice Today is officially coming to an end. A sad day for my favorite comedy podcast :( Dear Fun Bunch, No new episode today—we're draining the waterbed and fanning out the bathroom. YLNT is coming to a close.— You Look Nice Today (@ylnt) February 2, 2013 We'll do a final bye-bye episode, to be released in the next couple of weeks. We *will* be recording that one in the nude.— You Look Nice Today (@ylnt) February 2, 2013
Listening to the latest CBB. I find the idea of them having someone pretend to be Sarah Silverman a little weird since they've had the real Sarah Silverman on several times and she's a good friend of Scott's. I also never care for musicians on CBB. It's Comedy Bang Bang, not Music Bang Bang, dammit. And the main guest's show, The Burn on Comedy Central, sounds dreadful. The next episode features the return of Gillian 'Gilly (Sorry)' Jacobs and her beau Garry Marshall, so that's a good way to make up for a bummer of a Monday ep.
Hah, is that what was happening? Somehow that did not occur to me, even though I have been listening to CBB for a couple of years now. I just figured she was being weird and playing a cariacature of herself. Because you're right, she's been on the show several times, so there is absolutely no reason to think it wouldn't really be her on the show. I should have been tipped off by her not talking about her boyfriend and roommate sleeping in bunk beds.
Holy shit, this ep of CBB with Gillian Jacobs and PFT as Garry Marshall is one of the funniest I've ever heard. And I have a newfound crush on GJ.
There's a new podcast out there called Put Your Hands Together, which is the replacement show for Comedy Bang Bang! (formerly Comedy Death Ray, formerly not a thing*) that runs after Doug Loves Movies at the UCB in Los Angeles. Like Death Ray, it's a stand-up showcase, and the podcast so far has been pretty strong. It's also neat to hear stand-ups doing actual stand-up on a podcast, instead of improv or character bits or whatever. I listened to the one with Kyle Kinane, and he was hilarious. * 1. TERRIBLE NEWS Oh man, YLNT is the best. I only discovered it a few months ago and I binge-listened to the entire back catalog in like a week. Man, this sucks. No word on why, I guess?
The WTF interviews Marc Maron does with Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner are fantastic. As a kid raised on Mel Brooks movies, listening to him talk is always a comfort. His accent, his cadence, his comedy, all of it. Being Jewish probably doesn't hurt. But I love hearing about both of their lives and the way they influenced so many comedians is priceless. Also, the podcasts were visually stunning.
If you're a Dan Harmon fan, on the 2.5 hour podcast of the return L.A. show Harmontown did upon returning from their tour, Marc Maron has some long, very funny stories on that episode about some stuff that got cut from the Brooks and Reiner interviews.
CBB is hitting it out of the park lately. Be sure and check out the newest one with Jason Mantzoukas (sp?) and Andy Daly as one of his typically depraved characters.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman sounds a lot like Jesse Ventura. And Scott's nephew Todd is, uhhh, terrible-uh. There's a character-uh I never-uh need to hear again-uh! Also, the megamix at the end of the last HDTGM preview is literally the greatest thing ever. When you listen you might think 'what is happening?! This is garbage!' But it really is next-level bonkers.
