Join the server and PM me and I'll compare your hostname to the channel's banlist. Edit: Protip: my nick is Elyscape. I'm creative like that. Edit 2: It has been determined that RyanMM is not currently banned. Reports have been filed with the proper authorities.
All I know about you is what you post. So obviously I know at least something. But you're right... maybe you're nothing at all like that in real life. I wouldn't know. Edit - To expand on this a bit, your proclamations of "YOU DON'T KNOW ME" are pretty fucking weak. You have made many posts over the years, although you're correct that you don't post often. But the posts that you have made have generally fit the pattern I described. (I don't read the football threads, so you might be more pleasant there.) But here's the thing: if you present exactly one facet of yourself in most threads, don't be surprised when people equate you with that facet. Even though that facet isn't everything about you, it is a part of you, unless you're just trolling. And, well, I always give people the benefit of the doubt and assume they're posting in good faith. (i.e. not trolling.)
From Wikipedia - Ever wondered, Why a Canary? Why Black? I haven't until this very day... Comics man. The current* Black Canary can scream really loud. Patriarchal power paradigm much? Just for yuks, Hawkeye's girlfriend* is Mockingbird- Love the tacked-on "But she's also smart!" trait. *both of these women may be: currently dead, a skrull, exiled to a different dimension (or if very unlucky hyp-mo-tized by an inter-dimensional being, impregnated under mind control and sent back to earth to birth this being into this dimension), undead or divorced.
Mockingbird is actually awesome currently, and due to be featured in the new Secret Avengers series. Technically she's Hawkeye's ex-wife, they got married then were in the process of being divorced when she got kidnapped and replaced by a Skrull, the Skrull was killed, and when the original Mockingbird returned it was mentioned offhandedly that the divorce eventually got finalized once her legal identity was re-established (yes, in the Marvel Universe there's an entire legal industry based around people who've come back from the dead or being presumed dead).
So speaking of the Justice League game (but not to annoy Hanacker over much), I found this interesting conversation game from an Anti-Bunny link in the Tabletop RPG thread.
Haha, holy shit I forgot about that. "Hey Bill join our WASTE network!" "OK!" *joins* Entire IRC: "Hahahahahahah Bill has the worst taste in music, Celine Dion I mean come on now"
For years Chet posted nothing that was not an ad hominem attack, against anyone who disagreed with him on subjects ranging from music piracy to whether a particular game mechanic was anything other than shit. I remember one post (though I don't remember the actual topic) where Joel had disagreed with him and he responded by shitting on every detail of Joel's career and personal appearance. He disappeared from the board for a long time, and came back behaving quite differently, probably because the success of Portal meant he had to start watching what he said online.
Chet arguing against piracy was funny because back on OMM he not only once referenced using Limewire, we had a big ranting post about discovering the spyware in the original Kazaa. I think it even caught the attention of Kazaa's creators (or he ranted directly to the creators). So yeah, before he went legit he was a filthy dirty pirate just like anyone else, none too surprising really.
The WASTE network was pretty awesome. I vaguely remember some brouhaha before it went down or was disavowed and then self-destructed.
Was he anti-piracy in general, or was it a Tom Chick-esque anti-video-game-piracy only stance (where his anti-piracy stance seemed less about principles and more about working in and wanting to be friends with people in the video game industry)?
And of course whenever somebody pointed out hat POE was full of other people's copyrighted stuff, his defence was hat it was all taken from YouTube, so it was their responsibility to ensure no creator's rights were infringed.
Oh no it eventually extended to all forms of media. It cropped up in one of the many piracy threads/piracy derails we had on Qt3. I found it a bit distasteful. Just keep your mouth shut over the issue, you know? No need to go full hypocrite.
The strange thing is, Chet would never unload at Tom when he'd make the occasional reference to the fact he would sometimes torrent movies and shows. Funny, that.
Chet once went into a rage at me because I torrented a show that wasn't legally available for purchase. I couldn't take him seriously after that.
But sharing music is OK, man. We're all just listening to each others' records on a virtual hi-fi in a virtual living room.
Waste was good while it lasted, but I think it's no great surprise that it kind of had the curtain called on it. i miss it in some respects, I think I can beat Bill for shit music, but I had some great conversations and found some good music off the back of it. If we're in full on navel gazing mode, then I don't think it's a massive shock that Tom did what he did if we make the assumption that he regarded QT3 as his. He ultimately spawned a monster that he couldn't control and that was getting more and more critical of how he wanted to do things. He took himself out of the equation for a while, maybe in the hope it would all collapse and people would be screaming for him to come back but that didn't happen. So he comes back and culls the people he thinks are taking his baby away from him and everyone else who raises a stink over what looked to be a fairly arbitrary culling of "valuable" community members. They were valuable to our community but not to Tom's. ultimately I think what BF has given us old farts, especially, is a new lease of life. There's this stuff going on around us, there's been a bit of friction for sure but we were getting old, insular and stale. We landed here and suddenly there's this bunch of new stuff going on around us, Dan summarised quite nicely, and it's quite exciting. Last time I looked "let's play" was Angie going on about some pigeon game, I had half an idea of doing some FM thing stepped in there to consider it and it's spawned an entire thing which made me both back out slowly, and think that maybe it's a breath of fresh air that our, QT3, community could also probably do with trying to embrace because we're not now the QT3 community, we're part of the Broken Forum community. I'm possibly a little drunk and it's christmas, so sorry for the wall of text but Merry Christmas and here's to a great 2013.
I dunno, Tom Chick anno 2005 would most likely not have gotten into the whole Hurt Locker banning drama in the first place. When the exodus happened, yeah, it was pretty clear that we were critical as fuck of his behaviour and he, in turn, felt the forum had gotten out of control. But that was the end game, At the beginning the forums were barely moderated at all, ever, and while Tom got criticism on occasion it was never felt that Tom was working against the people in the community. That started to happen around 2008-2009 iirc. In short, after a couple of happy years of marriage we started to drift apart and in the end the only option was a messy divorce. But it was only obvious in hindsight.
Definitely mid-to-late 2009 was where shit started to turn downhill. I think Tapirgate and closing B&N was right around that timeframe.
There was a huge change in Tom over the past few years, starting with the "tapir" thing. Before that, it was an "anything goes" community, within reason. There was a period of time when DrCrypt's putdown artistry was central to the life of the boards, and Tom was as big a fan as anyone. To me, one of the oddest things about the post-tapir era is that Tom has had various toadies and goons yes-manning him, which he never used to. In fact, DrCrypt's #1 toady from ancient days is now Tom's toady.
Unsurprisingly, post quality at Qt3 has taken a huge nosedive since the exodus. They're riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, though some of that may be attributed to a lot of ESL posters. Still, the general tone is that Qt3 has a significant number of extremely young posters these days.
