Wait, it is suddenly wrong to honestly reflect on old board drama in the sub-forum specifically created for such postings? Don't be lame, Forge, Brett, and charmtrap.
I have yet to see 70 page or 20 page threads about specific BF posters or admins the people over there are obsessed with.
Lum didn't ban dozens of people from BF. Is this that hard to understand? Maybe it would be easier if you consider how people would have felt if there had been no BF to migrate to, and that sub-community of people on Qt3 just ceased to have a place to continue communicating. It is entirely in accordance with human nature to have stronger-than-tepid emotions for a community of people who have been interacting for several years. To wave it away as "stalkery ex-girlfriend" (nice casual misogyny BTW, charmtrap; as if ex-boyfriends aren't as bad or worse) behavior is to sell short the relationships people had on Qt3. I had been nothing but a supporter of Qt3 with many friends (and enemies!) and thought I was always in good stead with Tom, and 8 years later I was one PM reply away from being banned forever. For nothing. Telling me that is meaningless only shows your lack of empathy, not my melodramatic tendencies.
I started one, but it didn't get very far. Actually, I got a warning PM for it from Tom (even though he admitted it was funny). This was mainly in response to DL weirdly (and repeatedly) demanding that people stop enjoying games like Rock Band and learn to play real instruments.
You were a shit stain aspect of that forum for about a year. You have the authority to say all of jack and shit about who is obsessed with what, or to make any claims as to the character of a group of people who have been posting for longer than you've been sitting in your underwear and taking up the cause of typing stupid bullshit on the internet starting at OO. You were never a Qt3er, and the only thing you brought to BF was your same hostile hive-mind dog shit to every thread. Shut the fuck up.
Well, I certainly wasn't trying to be that. I was simply trying to make an apparently obscure point that there are a lot of people left who read and like both forums and that some of these "QT3 hate" threads get pretty ugly and personal. There's definitely a subtextual "all the smart, good people left QT3, and all those people that still post there are Tom Chick suck-ups and/or are otherwise lame." Maybe go back and read through these threads all at once...you may, as I did, think that certain posters need to get a little perspective. But hey, it's true...I don't post here all that much. I'll just exeunt the way I came in.
Which of the apparently numerous "QT3 hate threads" are you referring to? It's been almost entirely limited to this thread and, to a lesser degree, the Wardell thread. Also, "left" is a little different than "got kicked out with extreme prejudice". But hey, don't let facts get in the way of your martyrdom as you ride off into the sunset on your tapir. And we have Brett around to keep things toxic and personal.
Forge, I don't think you should view the discussion in this thread as vitriol spilling over as much as you should view it as a bunch of dudes with a shared history getting together every so often to share war stories. I worked at a company with a bunch of people I was really close with. Eventually that company dissolved amidst much drama. Now, when I get together with those old friends, there's always some time spent remembering the stupid things that annoying people did. It's just stories. It's natural to tell stories about the past, and it's healthy. I don't think it's a sign of the cloud of bitterness you are interpreting it as.
One week short of a year is less than a year. What, did you think I wasn't aware of when this happened?
If only there was some way to avoid reading this thread. God, life really is tragic in the way that you just can't avoid reading this thread. It's the worst!
Clearly everything Bill says is wrought with misinformation. I CAN NEVER TRUST YOU AGAIN, BILL! I might even start a thread about it.
Here's the main thing that bothers me about the continued dwelling on Qt3: It starts to feel like the organizing principle, the only raison d'ĂȘtre for this place, and clearly this place has grown to be a lot more than that. It has its own personality that isn't (or shouldn't be, after all this time) fueled by TomRage. We're mostly free of the more toxic personalities that Qt3 still has, this place has about 100 percent less queerphobia and cluelessness... it's better in almost every way. So can't we move on?
Limit the discussion to a thread in Dram Llama that flares up every so often? Yeah, we could probably do that.
As a Canadian, I understand the need to define your culture as something other than "not that other place". But trust me, the way to do it is just to tell the stories you want to and let it happen. If by "move on" you mean "no longer burning with rage over it" I think most people are there. I wouldn't worry about it.
Yeah, I don't think anyone's still seething over the whole thing anymore. It was just a shitty thing that happened and people will continue to talk about it from time to time.
There is also that 70+ page thread in the games subforum that is just going to go on and on and on and on.
I fail to see how anyone but Tom and Brad could be outraged, and I fail to see how those two did not deserve to be outraged.
Yeah, because that thread's totally about raging at someone from Qt3 and not about misogyny in the workplace at all.
Seriously jerri it's not that at all. I'm a qt3 refugee (haven't been banned there; but I mainly post to P&R and I'm quite a bit less, err, restrained there than I am here so mainly I give no fucks). Anyway the point of establishing my cred is this: we've all got these long memories (I joined QT3 in 2003) and we like to talk about them sometimes. Yeah that discussion often focuses on the drama but that's sort of the way the world works. It's constrained to a small handful of threads and it doesn't really affect the other forums so who gives a shit? Hell if you look at the way this thread is going, it's less about Tom in the recent pages and more a best of qt3 wackiness, complete with a link to DeepT posts that I spent a good 30 minutes today laughing over.
And like any good farce, we will Lolz about it in years to come. We will also probably bore our friends by reciting Chick posts word for word, and snicker to ourselves at "tapir" and "toggled" whenever they come up in conversation. In other words, we are just like any other aspie nerds anywhere.
Yeah, tapirgate was legitimately hilarious. Tom turns the c-bomb into "tapir" in response to which the community discovers that tapirs are fucking adorable and it turns into the unofficial forum mascot (I believe it was even at the top of Albert's chart for a while). Sadly Tom has no sense of humor and viewed the embrace of the tapir as some kind of fucked up challenge and yeah we all saw what frowny-face style stuff that led to.
OMG. I was lurking until I saw this one. had to post. I was banned during Tapirgate. My wife had taken an awesome picture of a tapir at the zoo, and I remembered people talking about tapirs on the forum. I made anew thread about the pic, and BOOM. Insta-ban.
Until Tom showed he didn't understand it at all, I thought the tapir manoeuvre was a pretty clever bit of judo to defuse a situation. Sadly I was wrong.
Ah, that reminds of the favorite letter thread, too. GOOD TIMES Also, seriously, like, seriously, the next person that comes in here to complain about other people complaining needs to take a long, hard look at just what it is they are doing AND THEN SHOVE IT UP THEIR ASS
