You know, I always wondered how Tom knew who owned which sockpuppets, since I couldn't tell from the writing style or frequency of posts or... anything, really. And I gathered that Tom didn't hang out in the super secret IRC channel, so he didn't have that avenue of scuttlebutt either. I just assumed that he was able to look at posters' IP addresses, or something like that. Turns out he had no clue either. He was just more forceful in his wild guesses than I would be.
Yeah, he was able to look at IPs. And if you used a common IP, like a popular proxy or were surfing from a mobile device, you'd be accused of the stuff that everyone else from that IP range had done.
