Yeah, Tom was asked to set it up, and took time to look into how to make it private on request. I thought it was a good sign at the time.
Define active. Speaking as #24 (or, at least, I was the other day), I log in from time to time to check on things, but haven't really been posting over there at all.
For the purposes of my admittedly quick check, I counted someone as active if they had two or more posts in the past three months or so, or were shown as online on Wednesday (and it's entirely possible that someone who hadn't frequented the forums much lately had picked that particular day to log-in.) A much more through check would involve pulling up a history of recent posts for each member instead of checking the most recent log-in date, but I find that process to be very frustrating since one would have to wait sixty seconds before each search, so I will leave that to someone with more patience than I have. Edit: I should add that my check definitely leaned more towards the broader question of finding out, "Who's still there?" at Qt3 more than "who's still posting?", which to me is a different matter.
Ha, I log in every time I look at Qt3 because of my browser settings, but outside of a PM or two, I haven't posted for - standby please - 6 months.
I thought that there was a secret forum here, but it turns out that it was just a text file that I had open on my desktop. I guess that's why I was the only one posting in it.
It's painful to browse threads there. I've avoided it for a couple days just because it's horrible to read threads there now.
Looks fine to me, though the thing I've gotten used to most on BF I think is that there's a fixed and centered horizontal size to the threads.
I thought you were joking but first thread I clicked on had a nice flashing image advert within the OP, and the next had and Dawn Falcon still foaming wildly :/ What a waste.
Well, he's trying to earn a living off Qt3-related advertising. I wish him luck in that but... the market isn't there any more, really. Suffice to say I make a ton more from donations every month than I would spackling the forum with ads, and I'm not exactly getting rich (it does make BF self sufficient which makes me happy). People with a LOT more traffic and visibility aren't able to live off ad revenue for their websites. The internet ad market is remarkably shitty and has been for years. See: Andrew Sullivan, who jettisoned ads entirely in favor of voluntary subscriptions. It's safe to say he gets a lot more traffic than any of us could hope for. I would argue Tom should probably do the same (as would I should I decide to get back into interweb punditry) as the economics are far in favor, not to mention the good will engendered when ads and skeevy ad-related practices are kicked to the curb.
The NPR Planet Money podcast had a recent episode about Andrew Sullivan's subscription thing, which rightly brought up the open question of just how many current subscribers would reup when the time came, that there appeared to be a burst of signups that's slowing down, etc. Time will tell how well it continues to work. I'm not sure how well it'd work for anyone with much more limited name recognition.
So you sat there and carefully considered what was being said then clicked to close the window, disgusted that Tom allowed Dawn to ruin a perfectly good advertisement?
Bleh, I do not like the new layout of Qt3 at all. I've been reading the games discussion over there off and on, but it's gotten almost painful now.
I'm using Grayfolio-Black. Looks and functions fine to me, though some of BF's conventions have spoiled me, particularly the ability to add another quote to a post-in-progress simply by hitting Reply on that quote. Unfortunately it doesn't always work since not all quotes are listed. So if you plan on quoting two things on two different pages of a post, which does happen sometimes, the only recourse is to Reply in a new Tab and CUT+PASTE into your original post.
God it's awful. It makes going schadenfreude trips far less pleasant. Damn you, Chick; you're ruining my fun.
Nah, I still find about as much value, and annoyance, over there as here. Sadly the great schism didn't occur perfectly on the lines I would have liked it to, but what can you do.
I find a year later there's nothing I miss enough about Qt3 to invest the time into checking out both forums. That said, there are elements of BF that annoy me, so like Forge the split didn't go as cleanly as I'd have liked.
Well, it used to be that I could zero in on a handful of topics over there pretty easily and avoid the discussions that were destined to be the equivalent of a youtube comments section, but I find that much harder to do now, to the point that RyanMM may be right.
An episode also featuring my friend Maura! Who is awesome and I hope manages to make her iPad thing work.
Yup. They do, but they probably won't. We saw a lot of this at QT3 as well. Endless beating around the bush about certain people who are unable to behave appropriately, if you know what I mean. I assume it's a tactic designed to avoid drama, but by being indirect about the whole thing, it comes off as just stupidly passive aggressive & unclear.
It's not about any specific people, it's related more to tone and topics and it's pretty minor vs. the overall forum. It's also a reflection of my own particular set of preferences and not something I expect others to readily agree with or rally 'round the flag over. I only commented because my view was similar to Forge's. In conclusion, it's all Forge's fault.
You know how Ned is. He likes to threadcop. Jerri is his partner. But they do more good than harm, so we only call them out when necessary, unlike Otterloop who we mercilessly hound and taunt.
I'm not sure how much cleaner the split could have been. The people who got kicked out or thought it was bullshit left, the people who didn't think it was bullshit or didn't care stuck around. The people who came here and were trolls got banned. Whatever kind of utopia Forge and Creole Ned are imagining, it's pretty far into pipe dream territory.
Saying 'elements of BF annoy me' is not the same as WHERE IS THE UTOPIA I WAS PROMISED?! Or is it?! (no)
No, there are only two options. You either think everything is perfect or you think it's all garbage. WHICH IS IT, NED??
You both apparently have vague issues with BF that you refuse to clarify, so who knows what you're talking about.
No, the issues are not vague, they're minor and unimportant and I have come to regret posting at all. Now I shall cry myself to sleep. GOOD NIGHT.
