All int all the time. You can pump other things after 50. Absurdly high int: It's the only way to fly.

I was rounding out my stats for the greatsword early (16 STR) which coincidentally lets me use a halberd (of which the crystal one will be used to chop Seath's tail later on) in the mean time. I also get to use the Dusk's catalyst (I was over INT-ed for that the last time, too). I'm not happy with my END, I'd like more stamina and I'm running at <50% because I'm not going to wear the antiquated skirt on a guy. Havel's can open up <25% in some situations.

That said I made the halberd into a magic halberd +2 (maybe +3). Probably highly unnecessary, what with the magic and all, but I just felt like doing it even if it meant going to the depths.Getting two damn green shards from the slimes was way too long (at +6 soft humanity). At least that and the gaping dragon bought both of Grigg's rings.

I used a magic claymore +5 until I got Seath's tail. It's a good weapon while waiting, especially if you are going to focus on pumping int.

  4. CheesyPoof Armchair Designer

You mean you didn't moonlight butterfly horn? Or Velka's Rapier?

I dunno if I'll use the rapier this time around (I barely used it the last) since it requires more DEX than I have.

I think I did the same thing on my reason greatsword sorcerer. It was fine, although the net effect was to just make me sick and tired of greatswords.

Edit: btw when I say "magic upgrades are useless," as I often do, I mean that Magic +6-10 is useless because it's always worse than Enchanted, not that all Rickert upgrades are useless.

Most of what comes out of my mouth while playing this game consists of Doom comic quotes.

"At this particular moment in time, I don't believe I have a healthier or more deeply-felt respect for any object in the universe than this here Black Knight Greataxe."

    Is that weird?

That has always confused me, because 1) the enchanted ember is easy to get early, 2) By the time you have the large magic ember why aren't you using the moonlight greatsword!?

  8. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

Well this is why Enchanted weapons aren't more widely used. It isn't just the MLGS, either; all three special int weapons are superb, much better than their faith equivalents and much too good to allow Enchanted weapons to be widely used. As a result, I literally had no idea where the Enchanted Ember even was before I looked it up just now.

  9. CheesyPoof Armchair Designer

Heh. I came across it by accident on my STR character. For the achievement I think I got a found weapon and upgraded that. What's neat, though, is that it's in the same spot as the blue slab in the Royal Wood. And guarded by two 'giants'!
    extarbags likes this.
  10. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

Wow, I didn't know that was there either. Is there a red slab somewhere in the DLC to complete the set?
    CheesyPoof likes this.
  11. CheesyPoof Armchair Designer

Sadly, no. It's the one thing that prevented me from getting all the weapon achievements in NG (and I didn't want to part with my flame to trade with snuggy).

ETA: But if there is, it would be news to me.

Confession and boast: I have 170hrs in the game and I just soloed the 4 Kings for the first time. :D :D :D

(Took Havel's and a +10 Fire Zwei + Power Within + Iron Flesh; I doubt I'll be able to do this in NG - nowhere to go!)

Obviously you're a long way from dealing with this, but there are places to go. Physical weapons, buffs thereon, and high-powered sorceries can all wreck the Four Kings' day.
  14. wallapuctus Oh, Come On

I thought this was the confessions thread?

I'm going to confess that I need fast souls last night to upgrade some items to +5, so I exploited the forest covenant dudes. I feel like a cheese every time I do that, but there's no better way to quickly get 99 Titanite Shards (that I know of).

  16. wallapuctus Oh, Come On

Here's another confession: I got invaded while I had a summon buddy with me. The invader was geared for griefing, but he wasn't expecting my POISON ARROWS! All my buddy had to do was occupy the darkwraith while I shot arrows at him. I think I earned back the souls I spent on the arrows when he died. I probably lost money in that transaction.
  17. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

That's awesome. Dropping invaders with oddball tactics is one of the great joys of Dark Souls PvP.

OK, confessions. I get in a habit of doing things in a way that works and sometimes don't deviate from that. In this game with certain build that can mess you up and it forces you to change, good deal. However, for other things I'm still stubborn about. For example, the 3rd serpent in Sens, the one on the walkway with the first set of pendulums. First play though I got into the habit of sticking it with an arrow to pull it and fighting if it made it through the pendulums, or going about my business if it got knocked off. I did this for every game iteration on my 360! It wasn't until I was on my STR build where I said, "hey, I got a good shield now, know how to use it, why don't I just walk up there and kill it right and proper!" This gamer.

Today's confession: I've never been this scared in a video game, I almost cried.

I'd been making my way through Blighttown very slowly and carefully, taking my time so I wouldn't get ambushed. I reckon it took me about an hour and a half to get from the upper bonfire down to the bottom. Down below I had no idea where to go. I have a very bad sense of direction in video games, and kept getting turned around and lost. I quickly went from having 23 purple bloom to only 9, and only had 1 sip of my Estus flask left.
I was lost, frustrated and worried I might not make it to the next bonfire, when I finally saw it, just across the water. I very carefully took down the nearby mobs, not wanting to die just before being able to tag the bonfire. As always, I was playing offline since my frame rates don't allow online play.
Once I cleared the nearby area I was down to half my health, but that was fine; I could make a quick run to the fire, rest and be safe. When all of the sudden this huge message appears:

You have been invaded by maneater Mildred!

and this red ghost pops up! I'm terrified: I'm not prepared for PvP, I don't have enough health left and if I die I'll be in the middle of nowhere again and have to get back all the way to where I died which will probably take me another hour. Frantically I start waving my weapon, only to realise I've got my bow and wand out (and no spells left) rather then my sword and shield! So I run backwards, trying to get some room before she hits me, only to stumble over a slug. By this point I'm yelling on top of my lungs :"leave me alone, just leave me alone! I'm not even online, you can't even be here!" and other similar inane phrases. I get poisoned, my health drops fast, and so I do what any coward would do, I Alt-f4 out of the game.
At this point I'm almost in tears, and my husband is sitting there staring at me wide-eyed and asking if I'm okay.
    "I can't even be invaded, I'm offline" I sob.

Of course a quick visit to the wiki explains how I got invaded despite being offline. I reload, swap my weapons, sip my estus flask, and take her down easily this time. DARK SOULS.

Let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly. I think you've messed around and died a bunch in upper Blighttown before, right? So you finally became human to kindle the upper bonfire, and then made a single 1.5 hour trip to the bottom?
  25. Mirriam Hard Cider Gal

    Location:
    Ireland
Yes, I did. It was not until I got to the second bonfire in the bottom and went towards the big hive that I realised how the waterwheel worked and that I could use it easily to get down from the Drake Valley side to the swamp. That would have been a lot faster, and safer too since I'd already killed the Dart Blowers when I grabbed the Crimson set.

I think From tweaked Lost Izalith from the original console version, because last night I could *not* get a bunch of legs to aggro on me so I could drag them all together and have them kill each other. They would lose interest when I was in a safer area and wander away.

The legs in the lava? It can still be done, at least as of last week. They do lose interest after a while if they can't get at you but with some judicious Hawk ring arrowing to maintain their interest you can draw a pretty big pack to one of the pillars and still rake in the souls.

On xbox it was more of a "oh GOD THEY WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE" but maybe just cause it was my first time through. Anyway, didn't have a bow so mostly ignored them, pulling with crossbow/binoculars takes too long, by the time you pull the second the first is wandering away.

He is so fucking cheap. Had him down to a sliver and he ran over me and one shot me while I was at full health (26 vit) with my shield up. High poise 70+, silly high magic resistance 280+, 76-77 stability shield (+5 silver knight). Most of the other bosses I could take down pretty easy other than bed of chaos because of that stupid fucking jumping puzzle in the middle of it but this one is just super cheap.

Yeah, that attack is meant to be dodged, it is effectively unblockable. I couldn't do it on my shield but luckily it only did about 50% of my health. What's your endurance? Whether or not an attack blows through your shield is dependent not only on shield stability but how much endurance you have.

That's one of the fights (like most in the DLC) where I find the steel ring pays off big in terms of keeping me alive, not least because it helps with both magic and physical attacks in the case of Kalameet.

Well, right, but there's a point at which Dark Souls embraces the reality of a situation. A dragon which in all likelihood has ten or twenty tons of mass is not going to fail to bowl your ass over when it swoops down at you, or slams it's entire body on top of you.

Honestly, I like that, because it's kind of ridiculous in games when you can just turtle through things that should turn you into mash.

  38. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

Well in fairness to Xaroc 's expectations, that's the exception for sure. The game does start you off with a boss that hits you with an axe as big as your body that you have no trouble blocking, after all.

Right, but there's levels. When you block a big dude's hits, it will often fling you backwards, with enough force/distance/air that it can be difficult to get an attack in before he swings again. They are fairly consistent about how they handle momentum of hits vs enemy sizes vs shield types.

Other examples would be standing directly under the Super Smough buttslam, the Kite Dragons overhead flame unless you are on the edges and can face inward with a fire resist shield and so on. But I'm still kind of surprised that it can't be tanked, because I've typically favored the black knight shield or eagle shield for the battle but trend towards 40 endurance characters, and I don't recall being one-shotted by anything. Not sure but I guess I'll have to experiment when I finally get around to doing it with my SL1, but it's possibly connected to prioritizing physical resist over magic (or just my flawed memory).
