Well that's the "backtracking" that I mean. And no, it's not a big deal.

Right, but it's possible peacedog missed the shortcut and thinks they have to go the long way down.

That's why I gave him instructions for the shortcut, man! Do you have me on ignore? ;)

Has anyone seen extarbags lately? He seemed like he use to like this game.

I did not get the peculiar doll. I more or less reversed my course to back track because I hadn't collected all the things yet. I now have the lightning spear and some other irrelevancies. I needed arrows (just in case) so I headed back to Firelink, Picked up Homing soul mass and then used my bestest souls to get enough to buy soul spear. Upgraded the Lightning Spear to +3 but I'm out of chunks. Even without upgrades it was a huge improvement over the drake sword, which really wasn't cutting it any more. I'm going to pick up some decent arrows from chesty and head back in. I did kill the fire giant, get Rickard's rapier, and get some of the treasures on the roof. I'll go get the doll now, and I think I might try to kill Havel and see what happens.

Lighting spear +3 will be sufficient until you get to the giant blacksmith, then it's moonlight butterfly horn time.

The reason I mention the doll is that that gives you access to the Painted World once you get to Anor Londo. I normally don't do the Painted World until later (if at all), but in your case it might be good to do now, because that's where Velka's Rapier is so you can try that out and see if you like it (it's my favorite on my sorcerer, I almost never use anything else), and it will also give you a place to dump all the souls that you don't need to spend on int just yet.
  8. peacedog Worked The System

One soul spear did over 80% of havel's health I think (using The dusk crown, the ring, 36 int, starter catalyst). Heh.

Yeah. And that's a guy who dedicated his life to protecting himself from magic.

Edit: oh, since you mentioned that you're using the Sorcerer's Catalyst, a little catalyst advice: keep using that until you get Logan's Catalyst a little later, then use that forever.

A minor Dark Souls moment last night. After I chopped off Priscilla's tail I warped back to the room in Anor Londo. I was too cavalier and the very first painted guardian killed me (I know, I know). I figure it would be an easy enough run back to get my souls, but then I respawned at the Anor Londo bonfire, not the painted world. And I had killed Gwyendolin and the fire keeper aggroed on me. Not ready for that! Thankfully it was my mage and I could back off and soul mass and soul spear her to death. Whew. But now I had to go back to Sen's fortress bonfire to warp to the Painted world bonfire (why that? cause it's an easy run right through and I go right back to the painting) cause I sure as shit wasn't going to go through the top of the church. When I get back to Sens after killing that undead crossbower at the top I HEY BUBBA it by rolling down below and almost go off the edge and die. Yikes. The rest was normal.

Oh cool you can warp to Painted World now? Awesome.

You mean slumbering dragoncrest (the halos around the fight)? Really handy for PvP since the fact that invaders can hear you from miles away is what lets them get the jump on you.

Ah, cool. Yeah I have either never actually equipped that or equipped it so rarely and so long ago that I didn't notice or forgot that visual effect.

And a lot of mobs cueue off of sound as well, especially if they're initially turned back to you. It's a pretty nifty ring.

  15. CheesyPoof Armchair Designer

Yes, you can warp to it, but you cannot warp out of it, even if you killed Priscilla. So once you enter you have deal with it and can't bail. Of course, once you pull all your switches it's trivial to run out.

I wasn't sure precisely where you were talking about regarding that elevator but I found it. I didn't need the cage key as I've got the Master (or I assume so; master was good enough to free big hat). Anyway, I gave the Iron Giant a whirl. 2 homing soul mass ate about 30% of it's health. But he knocked me off the arena with a swing. I think I'll be able to take him without too much trouble.

Master doesn't work for that shortcut, that's why people told you where the key is.

Huh, I didn't know the master key freed Big Hat. I skimmed and assumed they got the cage key.

Clearly everyone is on ignore today!

It doesn't. Do you have everyone on ignore today or something?

  20. peacedog Worked The System

The Master Key absolutely does free Big Hat; it's how I freed him. I didn't get the cage key until after I'd cleared out the roof top (which was after I had killed the Fire Giant and after I had already freed Big hat. And back tracked, for that matter).

  21. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

I'll clear this up: the master key replaces the cage key for purposes of freeing Big Hat but not for purposes of activating the shortcut, just like how it replaces the residence key for purposes of getting into that house that has gold pine resins in the backyard but not for purposes of freeing Griggs.

That's me at Soul Level 52 (can't get the pic to show for some reason, might be a steam thing). I went ahead and got a 5th attunement slot with my Iron Golem earnings. I'm working on some Vit next (I just put my first point in, actually). I've gotten to the bonfire that you get to from the rotating bridge.

You look like my caster did. Vit is for chumps. Just don't get hit!

  24. Marcin Hard Cider Gal

Hmm, perhaps you're right. I could've sworn I tried to let him out first but couldn't but now that I think about it I had to get up to the top to get the ball shifted a different direction and by that time I figured I'd just head to the bonfire. *Then* I figured I'd unlock the shortcut and got the "Locked" message, which I conflated with Logan's cage in my head, simply because I rushed to the top.

I was also gleefully flattening Serpent Men, so that may have caused some lack of attention to the order of events. (WHAMMM!)

Man, that's beautiful. FWIW you're probably going to end up with the vit in the end because there's no point in raising int/att beyond a certain point, but if you aren't having trouble related to your ultra-low vit by all means keep it up.

What else did you spend points on, and what level are you? Mine has 40 end, 40 vit, 50 int, 16 str, 16 dex, and I think 28 att at level 150, so I guess if I duplicated those except for the vit I'd be at 15 vit and level 125... but there's really nothing much to spend it on besides vit at that point even if you leave it that long.

From memory I'm around SL110, 30 end, 55 int, and 7 attunement slots. But it might be six. Other than that everything is low.

You know, there's been a lot of talk recently about whether or not the Master Key frees Big Hat or not. But I think we're forgetting the *real* jewel of Sen's Fortress: the Soul of a Hero in the cage next to Big Hat. That sucker is worth 10,000 souls.

You can keep your stupid vendor with his stupid spells. I just wants me some cold, hard cash.

That reminds me of something interesting I noticed on my latest character; they put an unmissable green titanite immediately before you find Vamos. Which means that as long as you have a +5 weapon at that point (which you very much should, in most scenarios), you could immediately convert that weapon to fire even if you didn't have many souls on you. You would likely have enough from the few skeletons to do the conversion process.

    These guys. They are geniuses.

"Unmissable" my ass. You misunderestimate some players' ability to miss that jump/drop most of the time.

Well, I could start working on End more too. right now I'm wearing the Black Leather Armor mostly because I haven't changed out of it post swamp, and the +5 Eagle shield is my main shield. Currently using Havel's ring to put me at 20/90. I could switch to the ring of favor; it would put me at 20/72 I think which is over 25 but I'd get boosts to stam and health, which is always nice.

I speak from experience when I say that there are many, many ways to miss that jump and still survive. Not only is the height sometimes not large enough to kill you, (depending on which particular ledge you're dropping from) but also if you fall directly into the hole from any height the cutscene causes you to not die from the fall. You appear safe & sound in Vamos' workshop. With the green titanite still up there, unclaimed. As it is in most of my games.

I'm trying to do a playthrough using heavy weapons and no range and well...the firelink shrine murder and his buddies kick the living shit out of me. Anyone know if you can summon help for that encounter? Guessing no since it acts like an invasion.
