I've hit NPCs by accident. Thankfully never did enough damage to truly anger them. My favorite exploit has always been accidentally dodging backwards off the steps in front of Rickert, when trying to 'cancel' out of dialogue after finishing. I've done that... an embarrassing number of times.
I made them for the achievement, but no. Between the butterfly horn and moonlight greatsword I saw no need of magic or enchanted weapons. I bought his spells in my sorcerers NG, but nothing since then.
I did something like this to the Giant Blacksmith on my first playthrough, after trying so hard for so long to get to him so I could finally upgrade my Halberd to lightning. I talked to him, got whatever upgrades I could for the Halberd, then thought I'd see what boss souls I had in case I wanted to upgrade anything with them. So I opened up the menu, hit R1 to get over to the inventory section, and watched in horror as my character rammed his shiny new lightning Halberd directly into the side of my new friend. Apparently it didn't register that I had pressed the start button first. I cleared it up with an absolution thankfully, but I almost wanted to cry at the time and ever since I take my index fingers off the shoulder buttons whenever I'm in the same room as any NPC that I care about.
Hmm I'm not sure I like this, partly because I believe ending the age of fire is ultimately the "good" choice rather than perpetuating it. Ending it frees the humans of servitude to the gods and eliminates the inevitable repetition of the cycle and agony of the undead. Ultimately the fires will fade again and humanity will again become scarce and need to be collected to maintain the fires resulting in the undead to rise and cause the world and humanity to decline. Ending the age of fire ends the cycle and frees the humanity from the fires (or at least stops the process of constantly feeding it to the fires) allowing humans to flourish. The Dark Souls are after all humanity so the age of dark is the age of humanity.
That's my main reason, actually. Since a faith character has no weapons comparable to the magic boss weapons, it's really about ease of access to an effective moveset that delivers solid damage through NG+ while still giving you the slight benefit of divine-category damage (ie PvP resistances, certain enemy vulnerabilities). Occult is fine but without having any one area that truly justifies its maxed existence long term (ie Catacombs for divine) it's hard for me to get too worked up about the damage difference apart from the enemy groups that are more vulnerable to it. Ultimately I find my faith characters petering out early in terms of faith investment and then moving towards "strength/dex/elemental + miracles" approaches because the ROI is so shitty for melee regardless, but the gargoyle halberd lets me keep at it for the sake of diversity.
Basically it tracks to miracle access. Some builds that trend lower level don't get over Emit Force (18) but by NG+ I'm usually looking at the Great Magic Barrier (24) tier at least if not the wealth of options at 30. 30 is about as high as I'd ever go, though; the one time I went all the way to 50 was a complete waste for me.
That's the super high level lightning spell right? I'm definitely taking int to 50 or so (at least?) on my sorcereror, but I'm sure what I'm going to do on the faith guy. Except I want that aoe spell and a couple of the lightning spells, I think. Which puts me around 30 iirc.
The problem with taking faith to 50 is that you get almost nothing between 30 and 50, and the spell you get at 50 is marginally better than the one you got at 30 and it takes up two attunement slots and only gives you five casts instead of ten. Super hard to justify.
I was thinking more Darkmoon/Sunlight blade, Vow of Silence, and Wrath (28) for the benefits of 30 (plus the stuff underneath I've already mentioned). The lightning is fine (I like the two lower level ones for sniping annoyingly placed enemies) but yeah, the 50 one is definitely not worth it. I also don't think 50 is worth it on int relative to 40 or 32ish level builds, but ymmv depending on how serious you are about really using the crystal breath, and at least with worthwhile int scaling on some weapons it's not a waste there above 30.
Well, I went to 44 int for crystal soul spear, and that's where I remain today. I assumed I'd be moving it up at some point since I'm also now using an int-scaling weapon as my main. I am unsure about where I'm going next on the build honestly (not too worried about that in the short run; maybe some more attunement or some vit).
I have enough of every stat on my ~SL 135 sorcerer that I'm pumping STR when I have the souls to try out some weapons I have. I did sidetrack to increase my attunement to 8 slots but now that is done I'll focus on STR. I got END up to 40 and I forget what my VIT is, but it feels like enough. INT I got to 54 or so when I figured it wasn't worth adding more.
I want more vit - a mistake in defending is sometimes too costly to recover from - but I think going to 40 end will be better first. I'm at a point now where if I wear havel's I can sometimes slip on some heavier stuff for boots/gloves (I think my total weight with 30 end and havel's is like 107). Another 10 end will increase my ability to do that at <25 and of course give me a ton of flexibility if I ever decide to do something at <50. And I think my vit will appreciate the boost more once I'm sturdier. Doing numbers in my head it sounds like I'm somewhere between 10 and 20 soul levels unspent relative to your build if I leave int alone: going to 44 strength (+20 from current, just an arbitrary number), 40 end (+10), and 8 attunement slots (guessing +10 stat), and starting at SL 78 or something. Vit is low teens iirc so it seems like I do have room to put quite a bit more there if I so choose. Hmmm, I should probably upgrade my eagle shield to +6 (and beyond).
Who cares, it's an aribtary number. The larger point is "if I play with strength, and do this other stuff, I still have this much left to budget relative to your build".
For your sorcerer? I think there are better things to get before STR. 50 INT is probably worth while for that last spell you get from Logan. I don't care for it, but you might. I'm only dumping into STR now that I'm at 130 or whatever.
I think it's great. Sorcerer with Havel's/Giant's/Artorias' etc shield to back that shit up? Enchanting the Dragon Tooth? I like it already.
Right, that's not the order I'm going to level things up. I'm simply saying "if I budget a future number of points to strength, which I will arbitrarily place at 20, here is where I will be at, and thus this is roughly what my projected Vit budget looks like". Immediately I think it's more End (+10) and then more attunment (+ however many to get to 8 slots), and then I don't know yet. The draw of using a stronger shield is attractive, but I may work on vit at this point. Or not. We'll see.
When considering stat scaling on weapons, it's probably best to hit 40 & then stop; all stat scaling on weapons experiences severe diminishing returns after 40. Points above 40 increase damage, but just barely. Spell damage, on the other hand, continues to steadily increase until you hit 50... provided you're using the correct catalyst/talisman. (After 50, spell damage also experiences diminishing returns.)
What type of character should I make next? Faith or Dex? I've done Magic and Strength. (And Pyromancy)
Ran faith to 24 on that character, helped someone do Capra, joined Sunbros once I figured out my way past the dragon. Lighting bolts look totally boss. Helping out on Capra was refreshing. The combination of the fact that (1) I wasn't first in (thus attension wasn't on me to open the fight) and (2) I felt like I was under no pressure made me a lot more comfortable. The dude was wearing a loin cloth, the boar helm, and using gauntleted fists of rage. Picked up second attunement slot so I can equip lightning and heal.
My sorcy is human right now. I'm waiting to see if I can summon help. It's been a dry spell the last few days seeing if someone would come along (alas). The thing is, I'm quite attached to this particular reverse-hollowing because we had some really good times, and I don't want to waste it (I do think I'm ready to try the sanctuary guardian again; I've had trouble with a pounce move but after some more attempts and watching film I think I'm ready for it).
I suppose Dex builds actually want to take Dex up to 40, not just 25 for the tracers? I'm not splashing in any casting on this guy yet, just trying to figure out if purely melee dex is viable/fun in the forest.
That's correct. Plus think of how excited you'll be when your pyro goes off marginally faster than an opponent's!
I seriously hate myself so much whenever that happens. Goddamnit From, should have made him skippable. I would, every time.
Also, screw people who don't think Dark Souls has a good story. The simple story of what transpires between you and Sif, which is a tangent to a tangent to the main story, is more poignant and powerful and moving than 99% of the stories other games tell.
Yes, it really is. Can't remember the last time a game made tear up, but that scene totally did it. I expect one day I will finish Xenoblade Chronicles and there will be a tearjerker in there somewhere. But in the meantime Dark Souls continues to be the greatest game ever made for more reasons than I can count.
I found that going with a dex-based character opens up completely new ways to play. You can go with curved swords for extremely high damage but close quarters fighting. You can go with a more elegant, precision-based style, a-la rapiers or certain ways of handling katanas. You can go highly mobile & tricksy parrying/backstabbing/rolling around thief type. (Although you can do this one with a strength character too, it really comes into its own with a dex build.) Or you can go with a heavy archery build: upgraded bows will actually do a *ton* of damage at 40 dex. Faith, on the other hand.... doesn't really open up new avenues of play. The lightning spears are pretty damn awesome, but they're kind of a variation on sorceries, except more limited in many ways. And miracles' other tricks, although often nifty, don't really create new play styles either. So.. yeah. Although you're probably contemplating how you'll be allocating early level stats, just be aware that if you focus on faith, you'll end up playing something somewhat similar to what you've already seen. Which isn't a bad thing at all.... those lightning spears are really damn satisfying. But just be aware. Yup... dex builds go up to 40, but their stat increase rate feels more natural than strength or int characters. After you hit 25, higher dex numbers don't open up any new weapons or spells, so you are able to increase dex just like you increase endurance: at a rate that "feels" right, rather than in an attempt to open up new stuff. In my case, I ended up increasing dex & end at about the same rate, since I was doing a curved sword build which requires more stamina than you can shake a stick at.
Aw man I'm stuck on the Four Kings again! This is the same place I gave up the first time I played. I have two problems: first, I tend to die a lot on bosses before I figure them out, and this is compounded because I feel very rushed fighting the kings; and second, there's no bonfire in New Londo, which means I have to walk all the way down from the Firelink shrine and fight my way through every time which takes at least 5-10 minutes a run. Plus I fucked up and used the fire-keeper soul to reinforce my flask instead of reviving the fire keeper, so I also have to warp into Firelink Shrine. Anyways it's all very frustrating and stupid. Also it's really dumb that the fall control spell doesn't work in New Londo. There's a place where it should work just fine, but the spell is greyed out. Lame.
