Thank you! Yes, I love this game and I'll definitely be continuing, I've just been thrown into midterms and Diabolik Lovers addiction (if anyone's interested in Dialovers, some friends and I have been working on a translation wiki for the game), so the thread's on a bit of a hiatus. I should be able to update a bit within the next couple of days, but for a while I probably won't be posting as much/as quickly as I did at the beginning, so my apologies for that. :C

Yeah, I've always heard that verb in the context of drinking something, but "swallowing" definitely makes more sense in this context. Well, I figure even without the exact translation, people still understand what Naala's getting at, but thanks for the explanation!
  2. Totally understandable. :) There's a lot of Diabolik Lovers stuff out now isn't there...I kept coming across it as it's pretty popular now it seems. It's not my type of thing (not a fan of dark for the sake of dark), but it is intriguing since I keep hearing about it.

Also, no problem. I just figured I'd mention it more for any future encounters you have with the word (since it seems you're really getting into translating). I'm not that great myself, but it was something I remembered from my three years of taking Japanese classes. For learning! :D

Okay I'm back and will working on many updates for today... Need to take a couple of minutes and regain my bearings because I stupidly left off right in the middle of a scene and have to remember what was going on and my brain is still wired like RAHRAH VAMPIRES AMdjsklfjifIJLSADjf SADOMASOCHISM right now, so nothing makes sense.

BUT YEAH UPDATE IN LIKE 20 MINUTES OR SOMETHING. HELLO.

So last I left off, Naala had rushed off and told Tooya about her experience swallowing the nameless flower and how that was probably what cured her of fushi. Tooya then said that the flower is actually toxic, so if they want to use it for a medicine, they'll have to neutralize the poison first.

Naala: "Basically if I'd made one wrong move, I could have died, it seems. ......even though that happened in the past, it still gives me chills."
Naala: "But then why was the damage in Nasura so much worse......We still don't understand, do we?"
Tooya: "This is just my guess, but Luce has more tributaries from the Tsegu River when compared to Nasura. It's possible that the people of Luce were able to intake the flower in some way from the river water."
Tooya: "The water most people use in Nasura is drawn from the river flowing from the top of the mountain range."
Naala: "That the water from the Tsegu River might be a factor really couldn't be predicted up until now, it seems."
Tooya: "Yes, though we can't reach a conclusion just yet..."

Naala: "Was my information able to be useful to you?"

Tooya: "It wasn't merely useful information. To me it feels as if this is the moment where the history of the continent is changing course. No, not "feels like", it really is that moment."
Tooya: "I really must give thanks again to you/your existence."
Naala: "......me too. If you weren't here, I wouldn't have been able to think of such things."
Naala: "Starting from tomorrow, will you research that flower?"
Tooya: "Forget about tomorrow, we'll start from tonight. We'll send the swiftest horse in the country."

Naala thinks that she's still pessimistic and believes that this could all be in vain. But she can't help but have hope that a cure might finally be achieved. She notes that Tooya's eyes are filled with hope and his body is shaking with impatience. She tells Tooya not to overwork himself and while laughing, he tells her not to worry and that she, too, will be helping out.

Tooya: "Still......why did you swallow that flower? I'm surprised you weren't stopped by any adults."
    Naala: "Ah, that is..."

Naala smiles wryly, remembering that she'd just told Uru about this story earlier in the day. She explains the story to Tooya.

Naala: "----and then, you know, that 'Bayaru'..."

Naala wonders if Tooya's really listening to her, since his face has been rapidly draining of color and expression. But she finishes the story nonetheless.

Now, I wonder what this expression could mean................................ (〜 ̄▽ ̄)

Oh yeah, I think the forum uses whatever avatar I have set as my gravatar... One of my friends has been doing BWS summaries/reviews at her blog, so I changed to my beloved as a show of support and so that my comments on her blog would look nice. AUGER IS MY FAVORITE. One of the most refreshing (if not THE most refreshing) characters in an otome game I've ever encountered. I've written so many essays about him it's not even funny.

*cough* I tend to get a little tl;dr-happy when he's mentioned... Back to Koezaru doot doot~

Tooya just stares at Naala's face without even blinking. Quizzically, she calls his name a few times, but he doesn't seem to register her voice. Finally, he mutter-asks if her current hair color isn't her natural color.

    Naala: "Eh, my hair color?"

She's confused as to why he'd ask such a thing. While feeling more unsettled, she knits her brow and answers that when she recovered from fushi, her hair had changed color. She figures it could be because of the fever or the toxicity of the flower that Tooya talked about before. Tooya just continues standing there looking flabbergasted. Naala asks him why he'd worry about such a thing. After a long pause, he replies.

Tooya: "Ah, no......because it's such an unusual color, perhaps it had changed or something, I thought......it was just something I was considering."

For science, you know!! For science. ....Yeah, nobody's buying that, Tooya. Naala thinks to herself that Tooya's smile is somehow unnatural and doesn't seem very calm. She thinks that his face is very clearly showing that he's hiding something and is about to ask, but Tooya changes the subject and is like "Well, we're going to be busy from here on out, huh?" and turns away before she gets the chance. Even though Naala feels uneasy, she doesn't want to keep harping on the subject, so she lets it drop.

WOW I JUST TYPED UP AN ENTIRE BLOCK OF PARAGRAPHS AND THEN I ACCIDENTALLY LOST ALL OF IT gah stupid Windows OS why are your keyboard buttons in different places

A few days later, Naala's in the basement watching through a crack in the door as Tooya and some woman are working on the research. It seems he's been avoiding her since that day and though he hasn't explicitly rejected/refused her, he got a different research assistant and hasn't been talking to her. She's frustrated because he'd said that he wanted her to help. She wonders why it's not her in there with him, but feels that perhaps she's arrogant for thinking so. She continues watching them while grinding her teeth. (lol) While explaining something, Tooya lightly touches the other woman's arm and she blushes. Naala thinks that a lot of women tend to crowd around Tooya and when she thinks of it, she can feel bile rising at the back of her throat. (LOL. NAALA THIS IS CALLED JEALOUSY.) Naala continues moaning on and on about "why isn't it me" and "why didn't you ask me to help".

The woman is all "Oh my, Tooya-sama, there's something on your cheek" even though Naala sees that there's nothing there. She just wants an excuse to fuss over Tooya. However, Tooya's totally focused on the research and is basically ignoring her, lol.

Still, Naala can't take it anymore and she runs off. She feels that if she opens her mouth, dirty, angry words will come out, so she feels while keeping her mouth tightly shut.

Without saying anything to Uru, she runs into her room and throws herself onto the bed while calling Tooya an idiot over and over. She beats her pillow in frustration while groaning in annoyance. Seeing all that gave her a feeling of indigestion. She feels that for someone other than her to be beside Tooya is unbearably uncomfortable.

She then says to herself that she feels lonely and again says that Tooya's an idiot. She then stops, realizing that these are her true feelings. Naala understands she's being childish, but she can't deny how she feels. Her chest hurts. She wonders how many more nights she'll have to sleep alone in this cold bed. She wonders how long she'll have to wait before he'll return to her side. The more she thinks about it, the lonelier she feels. She says, "...Mother, do you know why?" as she clasps the stone to her chest. She then presses it to her forehead and uses the sleeping charm on herself. She hopes to forget these unpleasant feelings by sleeping.

New chapter! This one is called "Tooya's Wife". Hmmm.......

    It starts with a flashback-dream!

Bayaru: "......I'll feel lonely being separated from you."
    Bayaru: "Lonely..."
Naala: "It's unusual for Bayaru to say such things."

This was the first time in Naala's life she'd contemplated what it meant to be "lonely". She'd always taken for granted that Bayaru would be there with her.

    Naala: "Did something......happen?"
Bayaru: "Very soon, I'll have to make a very cruel decision. It's intolerable, but I'll no longer be able to meet you....it'll be lonely."

Bayaru looks down and seems to be fighting tears. Wanting to comfort her future husband, young Naala pulls out a few strands of her hair and gives them to Bayaru.

Naala: "You know, when my father went away, my mother did this in order to keep my father from straying."

Naala didn't understand what "affair" meant back then, but she remembers her mother's shy smiling face and thinks that it must be something done to stave off loneliness. Bayaru repeats "from straying..." Naala tries to remember his facial expression, but there are still holes in her memory, after all, since this happened when she was so young. Bayaru thanks her and says he'll fight to the bitter end for her.

Naala: "Do you have to fight with someone?"
Bayaru: "Well, it seems...in order to end these turbulent times, I'll have to defeat that person."
    Naala: "A bad person?"
Bayaru: "They are to me. What he gives to the future is a bleak emptiness."
    Naala: "Emptiness..."

Young Naala can't understand those words, but somehow they make her feel lonely and sad. She then gives Bayaru her cherished hair ornament that her mother had given her. Young Naala wants to fill Bayaru's "emptiness". He tries not to take it, but she says that her hair she's giving him will be lonely, so she'll give him this, too. Bayaru says this is something important to her, so he can't take it. Young Naala says it's because it's her most important thing that she's giving it to him since one day he'll be her husband.

Bayaru then kneels and hugs her tightly while smiling.

Bayaru: "You're so adorable, my queen. Someday, without fail, I will come to get you. Then, together let's make a world where women are no longer kidnapped."
Naala:" Really!? You'll really make me your wife!?"
Bayaru: "Yes, I'll make you my queen."

Young Naala feels so happy that her head's in the clouds.

Naala: "Fufu, that's a promise. You absolutely, absolutely have to come and get me, all right?"

Naala then wakes up while saying, "...come and get me."

Naala wonders if she dreamt of that time because she's been feeling lonely.

She then cries out in pain and it turns out she was clutching her mother's stone all night, so it hurt her hand a bit. She wonders if the stone or the spirit of good sleep also gave her that dream for a reason. Perhaps her mother was trying to tell her something. While smiling, she stretches and then puts the stone away. She notes that Tooya still hasn't returned, which makes her heart sink. Again she complains that Tooya said he wanted her to help, but now he's ignoring her. With a sigh, she leaves the room.

She goes down to the basement room, but there's nobody there. Naala figures it might be because it's too early in the morning for work to start. She feels a little regretful about this, wondering if it would have been better for her to come later if she wanted to see Tooya. As she wonders about where he might be, a gust of wind blows some documents off the desk.

Annoyed, Naala wonders what the heck Tooya's female assistant was doing to leave all these papers cluttered around. She thinks that if it had been her, she would have put things away more tidily to make Tooya's job easier. (do I detect some bitterness, Naala?) She complains that even some drawers have been left open. Naala wonders if they were in a hurry, but decides that no matter what the circumstances, this is too careless. She walks over to the drawers and begins pushing them in. When she gets to the last one, however, a strange glint of light catches her eye.

Naala wonders what it is. She doesn't like poking around without permission, but she can't help but be curious and worry about something hidden in the drawer. She reasons that the drawer was already open to begin with, so she's only taking a look.

...to her complete and utter surprise, the object in the drawer is something she recognizes. She grabs it from the drawer and stares at it, unable to believe her eyes. It's her mother's hair ornament that she gave Bayaru, without a doubt. Naala wonders why it would be here. She feels as if she's been struck by lightning. "Something that I gave to Bayaru... Tooya had it...?"

"!? That is......" Naala hears a voice from behind her and turns around to see Tooya looking upset.

He quickly breaks eye contact, looking uncomfortable. Naala walks right up to him and grabs him by his clothes.

Naala: "...this is something that I gave to Bayaru."
    Tooya: "......"
Naala: "Why does Tooya have it?"
    Tooya: "......"

Tooya, with a face that looks bitter, continues to stay silent. He doesn't respond to either of her questions, nor does he look her in the eye.

Naala: "A-answer me, Tooya. If you are Bayaru, then I have to apologize."
    Tooya: "Apologize...?"

Tooya finally looks up, but then bites his lip and looks away again.

Naala: "As I thought, it's true."
    Tooya: "......"
Naala: "Lying is a violation of our agreement, isn't it?"

Despite his silence, Naala persists and keeps staring straight at him. Finally, a solemn voice leaves Tooya's mouth.

    Tooya: "...that's right."
    Naala: "! You are...Bayaru?"
    Tooya: "...yes."

Naala is very happy to hear this, but Tooya continues looking very pained and bitter. Naala says that she's happier that Tooya is Bayaru than that Bayaru is Tooya. Err if that makes sense. She feels that it's fate that someone who rescued her in the past is the same person she's bound to now and that makes her happy.

Naala says that he should have realized this when she told him the story of being in the flower garden and asks him why he didn't say anything. Tooya is silent again and his eyes are clouded with sadness. She keeps bugging him to answer and so he finally squeaks out...

Tooya: "...for a woman, her hair is as important as her life, isn't it?"
    Naala: "Eh?"

Naala is confused at this sudden turn in the conversation.

Tooya: "Before, isn't that what you said in the courtyard?"

    Naala: "Eh...oh, that."

She thinks back to the conversation they had in the courtyard when her hair was twisted around a branch.

Naala: "What does that have to do with anything?"
Tooya: "...I didn't want to deprive you of anything else. Even though I thought that, it turns out I already took something important from you..."
Naala: "Something important...are you talking about my hair color?"
    Tooya: "......"

Tooya, with his shoulders slumped, looks small somehow. Could this really be the case? Tooya nods. With a light giggle, Naala calls Tooya an idiot. He asks her if she isn't angry with him. She says she can't be since it wasn't his fault. Tooya insists it was his fault. She might not remember, but she fell in his presence while they were playing together. Naala seems confused about this, wondering if that was really the case. Tooya says that it was and if only he'd done something, perhaps her hair wouldn't have changed color.

Naala can tell from his face that he is extremely regretful. He's even biting his lips. In order to stop him, Naala places her index finger against his lip. Tooya's eyes widen in surprise. He says this might just be a convenient excuse, but at the time he thought that if he'd brought her back to Nasura at that time, she would've just ended up kidnapped like her mother. He also felt that if he'd hidden himself and gone to her village, he might not have been able to return to Nasura. At the time, the circumstances were such that he absolutely had to return, so he couldn't. So even though she was suffering from such a fever, all he could do was drop her off as close to the village as he could and leave.

Naala, however, says that's more than enough. She understands now just how hard it was for him to even go to the flower garden. Naala also thinks that if he'd done something else, she might not have swallowed the flower and she would have died. So it's good that everything happened the way it did. Tooya still tries to go on and blame himself, but Naala adds that hair color is a trivial thing.

Tooya: "But, it's your life, isn't it?"
Naala: "It's like that for most people. But in general I don't really worry about things like that. And anyway, I like this color."
Tooya: "......even so, for me to have deprived you of something is too deplorable."
Naala: "If that's the case, then I need to apologize, too."
Tooya: "? Come to think of that, you said that before, too, but what do you have to apologize for?"

Naala: "For not remembering your face. Even though I was young, for me to have forgotten a precious person's face......I can't forgive myself."
Tooya: "That would be unreasonable. You were very young and the toxins in that flower also affect short-term memory. Actually, it would have been a miracle if you remembered much of anything."
    Naala: "Short-term memory?"

Tooya explains the difference between short-term memory and long-term memory and basically says that it takes time and repetition to seal something in long-term memory. The toxins in the flower cause short-term memories to disappear. Naala is amazed that Tooya would know so much about the flower and its toxins. He must have studied hard, she says, surprised that such information exists. Tooya says nope, it's only because he "experimented personally".

Tooya: "It was pitiable, but I used things such as mice."
    Naala: "A-ah, of course."

For a moment, Naala had a disturbing thought that Tooya experimented on humans. But of course this is Tooya, she thinks, so for her to believe that even for a second was silly.

Naala: "Even so, you really know a lot about poisons. To go to that extent, you're more like a [poison] expert than a king."

Naala: "Not at all, I never would have sworn that oath with someone who wasn't that serious and sincere."

    Tooya: "...is that so."

Somehow, Naala finds his tone/response a bit strange. Before she can say anything, though, he speaks up.

Tooya: "How nostalgic. Back then, you were really cute."
    Naala: "I-I was just normal, wasn't I?"
Tooya: "No, the you who was desperately trying to win me over and made that promise with me was unbelievably cute. That's why I promised to make you my queen."
    Naala: "......did you seriously promise?"
    Tooya: "Were you just joking?"

Naala: "Of course I was serious, but after all... Back then, I was fairly young, wasn't I?"
Tooya: "It's not as if I had any passion/sexual desire towards you."
Naala: "I know that. --or rather, if that was the case, I would have run away. But that's not what I'm saying..."

Tooya: "The desire to place cute things near you is pretty natural, don't you think?"
    Naala: "I wonder...if that's true."

Naala doesn't really get it, but wonders if that might be a natural thing for men. Tooya says back then, he really liked (DAISUKI) that cute and brave Naala. Naala asks if he's trying to say that now she's big and cheeky/audacious in comparison. But Tooya says that now, towards the cute, hardworking, beautiful Naala... He loves her. (AISHITERU)

Flustered, Naala says he's going too far talking about a friend like that. NAALA, PLEASE. But at least she goes on to say to herself that she feels as if there's something more special between them that extends beyond friendship. For his part, Tooya says "That's true. Towards a friend, that might be so." Implying he doesn't see her as a friend, ohoho~

Seeing Tooya's smile, Naala also thinks that he said that on purpose. But seeing his expression, she doesn't see the normal clouds and red flags that would worry her, so she lowers her guard. She wonders if he misunderstood his dark expression earlier.

She can't stop her chest from pounding and wonders if she's been upset because of confronting her past all of a sudden. His words have knocked the thoughts of "Bayaru" from her head. It's the Tooya in front of her that is watching her and who said "aishiteru". Her brain is filled only with those two things.

Noticing her being all quiet and contemplative, Tooya asks if something's wrong, but Naala says there's nothing.

Naala: "Ah, that's right. Because we've resolved things, don't avoid me anymore, alright?"
    Tooya: "Haha......so you noticed?"
Naala: "Normally you're so attached to me. No matter how I looked at it, you were blatantly avoiding me--"

The two of them are interrupted by Ruji knocking at the door asking if Tooya's inside. Tooya says "yes" and tells Ruji to come in.

Ruji is surprised to see Naala in there and she's also surprised to see him. Then she wonders if the person coming to the castle that Tooya talked about before was Ruji all along. Tooya confirms this and says that Ruji has become the chief of the new laboratory built in the castle. Naala understands and notices that Ruji's got a stack of papers under his arm, probably reports of the studies.

Ruji hands over today's report and Tooya apologizes for making him go to all this trouble. He says he'll hand them over to Muru later and Ruji thanks him. Naala feels a bit envious of them since they're both researchers and share all this knowledge. She feels left out.

Ruji seems to notice her feelings and approaches, telling her he hopes to get along with her from here on out and holds out his hand. Naala's confused since she doesn't really know Ruji that well yet so she doesn't know if he can be trusted, but seeing his soft atmosphere, she feels that wariness is useless. So with a smile, she takes his hand and agrees. Tooya is less than amused. XD Naala feels a strong gaze on her so she glances at Tooya and notes that while he's still smiling, somehow his eyes seem off.

Tooya then says that he'll look forward to working with Ruji starting tomorrow. Ruji agrees and then excuses himself before leaving.

Tooya: "You really don't have any wariness towards Ruji, it seems. Even though each time you spoke with me at the mansion, you were extremely vigilant."

Naala feels that his tone contains a subtle hint of bitterness. There's a choice here between "I wonder if it's because of Ruji's atmosphere" or "It can't be helped, right?" The first one seems to be too complimentary towards Ruji and we know every guy in this game is a green jealousy monster, so we'll go with the second one.

Naala says it can't be helped because she met Ruji and Tooya in different ways.

Tooya: "Ah, that's true. But that's just simply how I feel."

Someone's bitter. Naala, however, doesn't get it. Even though Tooya's smiling, his voice sounds cold. While wondering if it's because of the wind, Naala tries her best to smile back at Tooya.

Aaaand that's it for now! /o/ I will be back later... Perhaps tomorrow with a smaller update. I'll try not to disappear for weeks at a time again, though. XD

Before my next update, I'd like you all to think about Tooya's poison research because how the heck do you test short-term memory in creatures like mice in this technologically-backwards time period? How would you know what they do and don't remember or what's stored in their short-term versus long-term memory?

    Just something to consider. 8D

If anything, I'd assume he trained them to do something when stimulated somehow (like make them stand when they see cheese), and then test whether they could do that again after the flower.

I just assumed he actually tested them on humans. U: Maybe prisoners or criminals~ Or maybe he ate some himself for fun, haha.

On the one hand, Tooya and Naala are adorable.

On the other hand, it's kind of infuriating watching them dance around their feelings.

I just want to grab them both by the back of their heads.

Naala really needs to express her feelings towards Tooya. He said he loves her (isn't 'aishiteru' the boldest way possible for verbally expressing love?), it just seems weird that she wouldn't give him a proper response to that.

Man, I totally assumed he tested it out on himself at first. Because Tooya is a really intense and somewhat self-sacrificing lunatic. Buuuut now I'm wondering who else coul- fuck, did Ruji volunteer?

Well I'm not gonna lie, I'm kinda hoping he tested it on Noll (despite how unlikely that is). What? It's not like I hate Noll and want to see him poisoned or anything. Haha. Ha. Ha...

The scene starts with a flashback/dream. Young Naala's asking Bayaru about the fight he talked about before. Now that we know Tooya was Bayaru, all of Bayaru's lines are voiced, too, by Tachibana Shinnosuke trying to sound like a kid. It's kind of funny. XD He's labeled as Tooya instead of Bayaru, too. Naala says she's been worried he'd be injured ever since he mentioned it before. After a short pause, Tooya responds that he's fine. Young Naala is relieved to hear that the danger has passed.

Naala: "Are you not lonely anymore?"
Tooya: "......I'm not lonely, but it's still painful."
    Naala: "Painful......"

Young Naala feels that's even worse than loneliness.

Naala: "What should we do so that you're not in pain anymore?"
Tooya: "That's right......if you're always with me, maybe I won't feel this pain anymore."
Naala: "In that case, just wait a little while. As soon as I become an adult, I'll be Bayaru's bride."
    Tooya: "Hahahaha......that sounds like fun."

She understands that Bayaru is happy and looking forward to it, so young Naala jumps and down happily.

Suddenly, her vision starts to go funny. As she staggers, Tooya asks her if she's alright. Naala replies shakily that perhaps she's dizzy because she's too happy. She tries to take deep breaths, but her vision just gets more and more distorted. She starts feeling nauseous and clings to Tooya. His voice gets increasingly more worried as he calls her name, asking her to hang in there. As she begins losing consciousness, she feels sad that even though she wanted to relieve Bayaru of his loneliness and sadness, she's inflicting them upon him instead. So in a weak voice, she stammers that she's alright and he shouldn't worry. Her vision goes black and she can feel Bayaru's tears fall onto her cheeks.

    Tooya: "A-after all, I am--......that's why......"

At that time, what did Tooya say? Naala can only remember that fragment.
