Yeah, there's lots of good stuff available with right-click within right-clicks. I just wish you could get a current ammo count on enemy units, and a breakdown of applicable modifiers.

I play with health/stamina/morale bars always on, as well as max animation speed and automatic turn ending, to make the combats go by as quickly as possible.

Does anyone know how you recruit trolls? I've found a troll lair in the swamp, but I'm not getting an option to recruit them.
  4. TurinTuramba Worked The System

The option shows up after you beat the troll lair.

    Duh! Thank you.

Wow. So I'm trying out the campaign, and in it you carry your alignment over from shard to shard. That has allowed my alignment to become more extreme than I've ever seen it in a regular skirmish game: I'm darkest evil, apparently. What I didn't realize is that your troops have poor morale if they're the opposite alignment from you... even if you group them solely with like-minded troops. I was planning on creating a healer/swordsman hero, just to try something a little different. But holy crap... my troops were so depressed that they gave up at the first sight of blood.

Well damn. It looks like I'm going to have to do this entire campaign w/out healers. Either that, or start over & do this entire campaign without any good cheap units. Choices, choices.

Also: the evil non-human races kinda blow.
  7. Gremlion Hivemind Coordinator

You can completely reverse your alignment during one shard. Btw, healers so good for sustain that I used one with demons. He had -8 to morale. :)
  8. Mark M Elitist Negative Nancy

Yeah... I'm not so concerned with the healer's morale. I'm more worried about my depressed barbarians, thugs, and shamen. You know... the guys that are doing the heavy lifting. =)
  9. Gremlion Hivemind Coordinator

    Don't worry. Berserkering restore morale.
And even %penalty to damage means at most 2 points of attack for high level Tier 1 unit.

Do you just take over everything but before you finish the shard keep buying "good" or "evil" units until your alignment is what you want?
  11. Mark M Elitist Negative Nancy

BTW... how (if ever) do you use shaman? I keep playing around with them, sometimes creating an all-shamen army, sometimes mixing them in with barbarians, and... I'm not sure if they're worth it. I'm finding it hard to guage if those 2 shaman in my army are helping, or if I would have been better off just having 2 more barbarians.
  12. Gremlion Hivemind Coordinator

They are helpful to decrease damage of enemy archers (most notable barbarian weakness).
Most useful - with tier 2 casters (these decrease resist by 4 per cast, stackable)
And as cannon fodder. Probably best ranged damage for fresh T1 unit.
I prefer to build tier 2 meatshield after barbarians asap(These, with 40hp. brigands? don't have english version). Crushing blow on 10th+ level. With astral energy + web they can deal a lot more than barbarians.
Barbs lose their effectiveness in third ring on expert. And lose so hard, that I simple sacrifice them, because too bored to juggle with them.
Problem with barbs - if you give them defense and/or health, they more rare get berserk. And without berserk they are just sliiightly better than spearmen.

Playing through the campaighn has been really interesting so far. I thought I wouldn't like it, because your options are severely limited and you're only doled out 3 or 4 new things for each shard. But it's actually been a lot of fun, and it's helping me to understand the game a lot better & appreciate the value of every building. In my first several skirmish games, there were a whole mess of buildings that I tried to race through in order to get to a particular unit or spell. But really, there aren't any purely "filler" buildings; they're all kinda useful.

I ran into this, and found you only really need to delete the hardware.info file, not the entire folder. But thanks for the tip, your testing got me there!
  16. sher Noob

I've registered to provide some interface and tweaking tips since the speed of the game was mentioned.

    A few useful hotkeys:

Pressing ALT on battlefield will force units to show their abilities in right panel as your mouse will hover over them - there is no need to open each unit's card, only if you want to see full info with context help and descriptions.

Pressing Ctrl+F10 will bring up autocombat menu where you can order not to use magic or sacrifices to prevent spending gems in easy fights.

All calculations can be made easily since there are no stacks or sophisticated formulas but there is hidden spread in damage (healing) score +/- 20% (or something like that), for more drama I suppose

    -----
Game can be tweaked to run faster to spend less time to watch unit movements and such things.

In main folder there is file Eador.cfg. Within there are useful settings. This works fine for me right now:
    Refresh delay (default 40): 25
Poll mouse delay (default 25): 20

    Much faster and responsive.

To avoid repeating myself I'll provide link to another thread about this game with some tips and useful info:

You'd better to forget all ideas about "clones" and other TBS combat systems guys or you'll be doomed to suck all kinds of monsters dirty schlongs. No, really, it never stops to amaze me how people can play on easiest settings and lose. It's a "risk type" game - you can do great things if you use your brains, you saw the Scout progress after all.

So it turns out that fighting 12 slugs is kinda hard, even for my totally awesome & invincible level 15 death knight. I died over & over & over before I gave up, found a store that was also selling gargoyles, and revisited that fight with their help.

"You're not so tough against creatures immune to poison, are you? Yeah, that's what I thought."
  19. Raife Magister Mundi Elyscape

Yeah, I let Wizards handle large groups of slugs and spiders.
  20. ydejin This Is SEWIOUS

Was it the little -1 or -2s per turn from the acid? That's what always gets to me. I think you get nailed with the damage over time, even if their actual attack doesn't do any damage. That adds up quick if there's a bunch of slugs all stacking their damage on you.

Well, I finally beat a skirmish map on Competent. No reloads, 39-1 victory to defeat ratio. But it was a small map with 2 AI opponents, so my feeling of accomplishment is mitigated. The lucky find of a "Raise Ghoul" scroll in the early game gave my Wizard an edge, allowing me to push into the second ring of provinces sooner than I normally would have. Then I encountered a neighbor with undefended border provinces. I'm used to the AI having powerful provincial guards and trying to build up before attacking them, so I saw unguarded provinces as a clear opportunity to invade, but I still hemmed and hawed for a few turns because I was worried about how powerful his heroes might be. One of the things I love and hate about this game is the intense risk/reward attached to almost every decision. I love it because I play games for exactly that kind of tense decision-making, but I hate it because in Eador that tension can be excruciating -- at least when you're playing Iron Man style. Which I guess is actually another reason to love it.

I may try another small map to see how much of a fluke this match was before I go back to average-sized maps. It seems that the bigger the map, the more chance there is that the AI will surge ahead on the power curve, I'm guessing due to lucky treasure rolls, and/or the way the middle and higher level battles are auto-resolved.

It's funny that my Personality rating was only 7. I went in aiming to be an evil lord of fire, but ended up being a pragmatic necromancer.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of thing might show up in what the "Rewards" column on the right side of the score screen? I've never seen anything over there.

I played a long game where I got a reward for completing all the buildings in my stronghold and something else that I think was related but I unfortunately can't remember at the moment.

Yeah. Even though I occasionally cleansed the poisons off me with Restoration, I was quickly back to taking 10-15 damage a turn from the poisons alone.

BTW... I've just fought against minotaur provincial guards, and.. there's no way to beat, near as I can tell. They're all level 15-ish, so their already strong stats are fucking off the chart. Not to mention they have that armor reduction ability, so even my level 25 death knight (whose is fully kitted out in some top notch gear, if I do say so myself) goes down pretty quick. My archmage fares no better, despite having beastly stats himself. They simply have too many hit points to kill all of them before they decimate my heroes' respective armies. (followed shortly thereafter by the heroes themselves.)

This... seems to be a pretty major design flaw. I'm pretty much dominating my game, and I can conquer my rival's non-home provinces at will. But his home territory is literally invincible, and no amount of leveling my heroes even further (or further upgrading my infrastructure) will help. I am.... frustrated.
  24. Mark M Elitist Negative Nancy

I got a reward in there... honestly, I forget what exactly it was, but the awards tend to be stuff like "win a game without losing a battle", or "defend a province 10 times against the same hero". They're mini-achievements, basically.

Unfortunately, the savegames for the character that received the reward got corrupted somehow,* so I had to delete them. Otherwise, I'd just look him and give you the specifics.

*It seems that alt-tabbing a lot makes the game unstable, and that instability was somehow transmitted to the saves themselves for that character. Whenever the game tried to load, it would immediately crash because it loads up your current character as part of the load process. After I deleted the saves, all was right with the world. Except that I lost all my campaign progress. =(

Gremlion suggested using Mass Suicide to kill them or use the Necromancy fear ritual with Cloud of Fear and other Fear spells to win by fearing them to death.

I beat a Minotaur guard in my campaign game my own way since I didn't build the Necromancy shrine and didn't have access to those other higher level spells anyways. What I had was an Archmage with an army of Horsemen and Pikemen. I loaded the Archmage up with Web, Sleep, and Vulnerability spells and basically executed the following maneuver:

    1. Put 3 of the 6 minotaurs to sleep.
    2. Web a Minotaur then Vuln him and gangbang the shit out of him with Horsemen.
    3. Sacrifice Pikemen luring 2 of the other Minotaurs away from the pack. This is simply because by this point you don't have time to sleep them but you need them away from the Horsemen doing the ganking on their tied up buddy.
    4. Continuing weaving Sleep, Web, Vuln, and Horse-gang-bangs until there are no more Minotaurs.

I really ended up enjoying that fight simply because that's totally not a tactic I'd ever tried before or since but it actually worked.

Right... but I don't have any of that, and I won't in this game. What I have is a wizard that can throw incredibly powerful direct damage spells that go right through resistance, and a super powerful death knight. That's what all my buildings & spells are geared towards. I can't change 'em now. And using cc on single minotaurs just don't work. While I cc them one at a time, the other 6 come at me anyways. Then 5, then 4, then my cc on one of the previous one breaks, so now it's 5 again, etc. And all the while they're kicking the shit out of my troops, killing approximately one a turn.

So I guess this game is fubarred. I'll never be able to kill him. Ever. And he can't touch me either. Oh well.
  27. Raife Magister Mundi Elyscape

If I don't have a superwarrior handy, I rely on Mass Slow and Firestorm for hordes of Minotuars and Cyclopses. I've never used Mass Suicide, so I have no idea how effective that is. Mass Slow is the one level 3 spell I always get, and it's great for Scout builds, too.

I've gone back and forth on level 4 spells, but Firestorm gets the edge for me. Polymorph is nice, particularly for taking down Phoenixes, Hydras, or Giants quickly, but I like having two Firestorms. Dragon Form I haven't been impressed with, or the Life level 4's. Summon Phoenix is pretty badass if you can find it.

Since you already have a level 25 death knight you can try levelling him some more and then just have him sit in the top left corner where he can get only attacked by two guys at a time, while you cast every useful buff you have on him. Additionally you should send in the mage first and kill/damage as many minotaurs as you can. The damage done stays, guards in general heal only rather slowly.
    Mark M likes this.
  29. Mark M Elitist Negative Nancy

Wait... damage/kills stay? Fuck. If I'd known that, I could have easily weakened him with one hero, then finished him off with the other. Too late now... I've already restarted. Good to know for next time, though.

And I already did the "hide in upper left corner trick. And I had all sorts of awesome buffs up. They only helped marginally, since minotaurs destroy your armor. After a couple minotaurs, any hero will start to take full damage from their attacks. And those attacks *hurt*.

In my personal opinion buff/debuff casters >> direct damage in Eador game mechanic. Take a look at this battle: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/74473397/enchanter_sample.mp4
And properly geared warrior should be able to solo almost any guard on early campaign shards ( except maybe for this guys with spiders, don't remember name).
  31. grenvill Noob

Eador automatically back up your saves:
for campaign: gameX.bkc - shard save and gameX.bka - astral save. Rename one of these files to gameX.cmp.
for single player - gameX.bks. Rename to gameX.sav.
    for hot-seat - gameX.bkh. Rename to gameX.hot.
    (Х - your profile number playerX.prf)
I hope its not too late :)

I swear this game waits until I have just under the amount of gold I need for an event to spring it me. I could have 1000+ gold for ten turns. Hire a hero that brings it below 200? Ancient temple event for 200 gold that results in a rebellion because I only have 179 gold. Fucking game.

Strategist - no battle lose(you can lose hero, win battle and revive), no rewinds
    Explorer - >1000% explored total
Cartographer - map all provinces(slinger guards are good for this)
Builder - build ~120 buildings in castle
DragonSlayer - clear 10 sites with "Dragons"
Pillager - get 1000 gold from pillaging
Collector - equip set from 4+ items
Arena Master - become Orca. (10 wins in hardest league, then another win for title. Reward - artifact of choice)
