I don't get it. Why not?
  2. Royal Fool I Pretty Much Live Here

Oh, I just get the impression that people don't care much for this game.

    Here's a trailer.

Cool trailer, but I honestly don't know why they bother when I'm sure it will play just like any other graphical MUD. The idea of 3 faction PVP stirs a little bit of the DAOC in my loins though.

If gw2 is any indication, adding 3-faction pvp might not be an automatic win. It highly depends on how everything else falls into place.

I'm giving them a shot, though. I'm a sucker for beta testing mmos.

I don't care for solo CRPGs going MMO and subsequently failing like all the others have failed and taking an enjoyable series down when it crashes and burns.

    1. I don't think I could play this anyway, since my computer is incapable of handling Skyrim (and can barely handle Oblivion).
    2. I would not mind this game if it plays exactly like the console games, just with more people running around. As long as the addition of more people doesn't wreck my ability to explore and "eye-taste" the world around me, I don't care.

I still don't understand why this game was made, and the trailer answered nothing. It was really weirdly paced and I guess 3 sided pvp was what they were trying to showcase, but there is a clearer way to illustrate this. The sad thing is, I'll still end up playing the goddamn thing because that is what I do.

Personally, I'm excited by the idea of an MMO that uses something other than the stupid "button bar of skills" way of doing things. Maybe it'll fail. But I'm interested to see how it goes.

Are you two blind? Did you look at the combat in the gameplay video on page 2?

We allow MMOs to rake in money due to players not being able to stop themselves from trying to get to the end of the treadmill. It's rewarding the shittiest games on the planet. Knock it off.

  12. peterb Armchair Designer

Yeah. What I heard was "you left click to attack and right click to block." Frankly, that sounds better to me than the standard array of "Here are 20 skills on a button bar with cooldowns." That's my entire point.

All the stuff about the endgame, raids, guilds, etc, sounds like standard MMO bullshit that I'm not really interested in. My only point is that if you asked me "Do you want standard MMO combat or the sort of thing you did in Skyrim(*)" the latter sounds about 8731591385731289573819253985173509813579.34 times better to me.

And I don't know who the "we" is in your post.

(*) That being said, I think the constant refrain of "Oh, this is JUST LIKE ELDER SCROLLS" is a bit of methinks the lady doth protest too much, because the gameplay video certainly looks like the game was made by Samey McSameSame.

You can have left click to attack, right click to block and still have skill button bar, look at Tera.

I think using Elder scroll as an example of good melee combat is is somewhat of a bad example..should use like mount and blade or Chivalry.

Anyways, if it's combat you want there are already MMOs out there with those style of combat, like dragon nest.

Finally got into the beta with a rating (really?) of excellent. I'm sure that means nothing, but we'll see.

Yeah but this isn't even that. It definitely looks like the combat is nowhere near as tactically deep as Skyrim. It doesn't help that Skyrim's 3rd person is an atrocity and this MMO is going to be in that perspective. It looks awkward. It also doesn't look like weapon swinging directions matter, and that shield-blocking is just a changing state of your character's vulnerability rather than the pretty solid blocking of first-person Skyrim.

I also can't imagine why they have players in that video doing bunny-hopping slash attacks. They look corny as hell, and I'm guessing they're doing it because they're really, really bored of how long they've been recording themselves playing this game.

Oh, I think it's going to fail. I've said it numerous times in this thread and even on the podcast. That doesn't mean I won't play it at some point. I play pretty much any mmo that comes out. It's an sickness I need to be cured of.
  17. Freakazoid Herpus Derpus

This interview with Matt Firor is kind of interesting. It seems they've taken a hard right into making the gameplay feel more like skyrim. I don't know how much I buy into that, but that just makes me want in the beta more so I can find out for myself.

Literally the only new piece of info in there, and it's tiny and probably doesn't mean what you want it to, is:

I am dubious. I mean, sure, it makes sense that you could put the camera in first-person and approximate ES combat that way, but retooling their entire damn combat system since I saw it? I am dubious.

That is not a silly idea. Mechwarrior tactics will have turn based combat.

I also like the idea of an MMO where your "character" is actually a squad, and as you progress playing turn based battles you can recruit more members / different specialist roles better kit, special active / passive abilities for the whole squad etc. Something attached to the WH40K licence for even more fun, or even "JA2 online"

Eh, you're watching the first 20 minutes after the tutorial of someone trying to learn the game with no commentary. I played it at the event last month or whenever that was and liked it quite a lot actually.

But yes, Paul, from everything I know about your taste in games you'll probably hate it like you'd probably hate pretty much all MMOs.
  27. Merneith Oh, Come On

It's not the gameplay part that I'm referring to as 'soulless' - although there's nothing going on that makes me forget GW2. It's the blah visual design, the barely noticable UC, the inventory interface that is pretty much a copy of SkyUI and the animations that are, at best, adequate. It's supposed to be Hammerfell - a place like Sinbad's Baghdad. Instead, it could be any of a dozen EQ clones that available right now on Massively.

And yes, I know it's a beta but they've been working on this for *years*.

Adam, I'm glad to hear you had fun with your hands on experience. I really do hope they pull it together.

This looks like a worse GW2 being released a year or two later and with a subscription. Unless people love the setting so much that single-handedly overrides all other concerns, this looks a bit floppish to me. SWTOR has a better setting and it went F2P in less than a year after hemorrhaging subs.
  30. Paul Hivemind Coordinator

You know me well, I do dislike MMOs. I did like the first trailer they showed of this, with all those beautiful environments - almost thought about trying this out. I did enjoy exploring Skyrim, Morrowind and Cyrodiil, after all.

But seeings this bland and generic MMO gameplay cured me of that. Although things might still improve, hopefully.
