I'm so proud... I managed to beat sense into Jeff a few years back and it totally stuck. His opinion five years ago: Games should just be interactive movies.

Hahaha that is amazing. Well thanks dude! Can't wait for this game.
And also incredibly curious what is Clint going to be working on at Valve. I assume something with Doug Church, and if it's not some immersive sim game I will eat my hat.

So, the US release date for this is December 4th.

I'm wondering if it coming out two weeks after Black Friday is supposed to be a bad sign. That alone wont be a deterrent for me, but my purchase of the game is irrelevant next to it's (afaik) AAA development budget. Maybe it was impossible to make Black Friday. But surely, earlier this year (late winterish at the latest) someone was saying "we have to make Black Friday if we can't make summer". Given that much lead time, it should have been possible (that's over 6 months to beta it).

Considering how little bug killing AC3 seems to have had I'd be happy to let them push it into the next fiscal year if they needed.

That wouldn't bother me either. I haven't followed the release of AC3 that closely, so wasn't aware of it's release state.

Of course that might be a hint that the publisher has given up on it. OTOH, you can't really release it at the same time as AC3 can you?

Suddenly this is being reviewed and very positively too!

It's funny to see that Ubi is expecting to throw it under the bus, and it's probably going to be their best game of the year.

If ubi doesn't embargo reviews, it's because they think the game will be terrible. Also, have you seen any marketing for it? Nope, because they think it will be terrible.

The lack of embargo is so that they can get a 'raw' MC, so they can use it to hang people.

Ok, makes sense. Thanks for the input!

    Ugh, that blows.

On the other hand, this suddenly sounds like something I didn't even dare hope for. Must wait for lunch to watch some video reviews ... if it even remotely preserves the FC spirit of exploration I might have to get it ahead of the xcom and dishonored bunch.
  13. luke Fresh Meat

Charles, this was embargoed, wasn't it? Just for today, instead of the day of release. I've always thought of early embargoes as a way to build hype for games that are expected to excel critically, but I have no industry insight to back that up.

Already preordered on GMG for 30 dollars, and I am very happy about that because Jim Rossignol's review on RPS is very good.

Yeah, in various places I've seen people saying "Oh, this is out soon? I thought it wouldn't be out for another 6 months." Hopefully the good reviews will build some good buzz and word-of-mouth.

Pre-order justified! (I also jumped on that deal.)

Well, all games are 'embargoed' to the extent that they can't really be reviewed until they are given 'final' code.
  17. luke Fresh Meat

Right, but a large number of reviews were posted at 12:00 AM EST, and there were none before that time. Seems like more than a coincidence to me.

Yeah but a typical ubi embargo ends a day or two before launch at most. They probably had a trivial one simply to make sure there was a bit of hype rather than having things trickle in. But it's still the MO for a game they don't give a shit about.

Wait, you're telling me Ubi would throw McLovin at a game they couldn't care less about? Come on! :)

But yeah, what a shame to see them send this thing out relatively quietly and in December. I'd think any big FPS could get at least 2 million units with a little effort and the right release date.

On the strength of the RPS review this went from "couldn't care less" to "day one purchase". Woohoo, another game like Far Cry 2!!

Yep. After all the press this year I was totally uninterested. I watched some video about hunting pigs and went 'meh'. Then I read RPS and Eurogamer and shit, I just pre-ordered it.

If it can capture anything like the magic of Far Cry 2, I'm totally goddam in. I'm actually excited. Sounds like many of the good elements of Assassin's Creed but with fun shooting.

This sort of open-world game is in my DNA, so I was probably going to get it anyway, but yea - pre-ordered the hell out of it. Though the Eurogamer review felt a bit light on criticism after the RPS one.
  27. Tony M Oh, Come On

If you skipped over that interview that Paul posted on the previous page its well worth going back to watch. Thanks for the link.

I'm so happy to read the RPS and Eurogamer reviews. Far Cry 2 was one of my favorite games of the last 10 years. But the early videos of FC3 had me really worried that this was going to be a scripted nightmare, I'd basically given up hope. Such a pleasant surprise.

  29. Hunty Oh, Come On

I had definitely mentally filed this one away into my meh pile after the lack of buzz, despite being one of those people who really, really like Far Cry 2.

Now I can barely wait the week it's going to take to come out. It sounds like Far Cry 2 with all the annoying bits excised, which is something I thought had basically been given up on.

I'm not sure I'm buying the idea that Ubisoft threw this game to the wolves with an early embargo. The reviews are just too positive, could Ubi really have been so blind to the quality of the game? Isn't this exactly what focus group feedback is meant to have already told them?
  33. L'Oncle I Pretty Much Live Here
