Fire Emblem: Awakening: Because it's still a strategy game first and a marriage puzzle game second

Because Fire Emblem: Awakening is an awesome strategy game, it should have a thread here in the gaming side of the forum.

So far I'm up to Chapter 8, and have done 3 Paralogue side chapters. Recruited Donnel the villager but he has to be nursed so carefully to build him up that I haven't bothered using him. Pretty much one hit from anybody kills him, and I don't know if I want to deal with that level of frustration to see if he promotes into anything awesome.

Also, in Paralogue 3, I couldn't save any of the villagers. I didn't see any recruitable side characters on that map, so I let that happen without resetting/reloading, but I'm kinda worried I missed out on something good.

My support pairs so far are working out to be:
Chrom + Sumia (married)
Gaius + Panne
Lon'qu + Cordelia
Virian + Maribelle
Kellam + Miriel
Vaike + Lisse

Still trying to figure out who to pair up with Sully, Stahl, Ricken (maybe Nowi eventually?), and Donnel. Also trying to figure out what to reclass my main character as. I've only reclassed Chrom to a Cavalier, but I'm sitting on 2 Second Seals and am paralyzed as to what to do with them.

You just get loot in Paralogue 3 if you save some villages.

I think I went with like

Sumia + frederick
Lon'qu + Sully
Virian + Cordelia
Ricken + Mirabella

a bunch of others pair which I don't remember.

You get a Seraph Robe if you save... one of them, I think. The others give you junk.

Good game, but Normal Mode really was too easy. I don't want to do Hard Mode though, 'cause I hate how enemy reinforcements act on their turn.

I'm still working on who I should put Cordelia with. I might end up switching Stahl out for Libra and putting Stahl + Cordelia, and Maribelle is just who do I pick?

So I don't own a 3DS ( or any console, handheld or otherwise ). However, the recent Giantbomb quick look has sold me on this game. Should I drop the $200 for the Fire Emblem 3DS+game pack? Decisions. Agh.

I didn't, since I already have a 3DS, but since you don't, it may be your best option. The FE Awakening 3DS looks glorious and I would sit her consumed with jealousy if you got it. It also may be your only option when it comes to actually getting the game itself, because I don't think anyone expected it to do so well (who the hell do they think they are, underestimating us FE fans like that!?!) and the understocked even online.

I don't suggest it. The store owner from the game shop I buy my games from was really against it and had awesome reasons though I can't repeat them from lack of memory. It all boils down to the fact the game is on the memory card itself, it doesn't come in hard copy, and he has HUGE gripes against downloaded games of that type, so there's that. (I'm explaining this badly, fuck.)

Ah so it isn't a hard copy? You'd think it would be... Hm... I guess I'm with Rand on this one. Don't get it. Wait until you can get a 3DS and by then, the stors will most likely have hard copies to sell, and maybe at a cheaper price than right now.

the store I went to actually tried to sell my friend a 3DS XL + the game(not the bundle, a hard copy of the game and a new 3DS XL) itself for $210 which I think it's a steal.

I had to make this decision myself, as I was a non-3DS owner and had to have FE:A. Short version is that I ended up getting the XL bundled with Mario Kart because I found one still on sale (first party) for $10 cheaper than I could buy an XL. Combine that with the lack of physical media, and the larger size (I have big hands), made the XL win out in the end for me.

I did (well, I purchased EO4 first and foremost, but this was pick #2, even though I sort of wore out on the FE games a long time ago).

I haven't managed to grab a copy of the game yet (don't want to do digital with Nintendo's stupid eShop policies) but thank you for making this thread. I was planning to if I had gotten the game in time.

EPIC BURN! LPs are just not my thing.

FEA was my reason for getting a 3DS XL. Because of the stupid Nintendo shipfuckery, I ended up getting the digital download and cancelling my Amazon preorder. I actually ended up copying the game off of the original 4GB SD card that came with the XL onto a 32GB SD card, and everything (saved games and all) transferred over perfectly. Hopefully that means it'll work on other 3DS hardware (in case of catastrophic system failure), and also that downloaded games can simply be stored in a directory on my PC or in cloud-based storage for archival purposes.

Ah, I wasn't aware that it doesn't come with a physical copy of the game. None of the online bundles I looked at said anything much about how they were shipped. Given the Nintendo track record on digital purchases I think I'll pass on that one, although the FE 3DS does look pretty cool. Thanks for saving me $200!

Ha, everyone's pairing Miriel and Kellam together huh? Me too. I went with Sully and Lon'qu. I'm thinking Virion and Maribelle will be pretty funny. It seems like the game wants you to go with Chrom and Sumia, so I want to go with something else, some characters that show up later.

I inicially was gonna go with Miriel and Frederick, but Sumia just has to be the Canon girl and have only 4 freaking romantic supports (which is minus the male MU) compared to the other girls, who can romance practically all the other males. I wanted to scream my head off in frustration because I had such limited options with her and I had designated all her romanitic supports before I designated hers. Sumia, you may be my tank of a PK, but I hate you and your limited supports. FUCKING SUMIA WHY YOU RUIN MY MY LIST!?!!? I AM TOO STUBBORN AND OCD FOR THIS SHIT!!!

I'm working on:
Kellam with Maribell and Tharja with Libra

I dunno who I'm gonna pair Gaius off with, probably Cordelia or Cherche. Probably Ricken with either one of them too, or Nowi. I have no idea about the others yet.

I don't really have any specific reason as to who goes with who other than people I think work well together personality wise, though I heard the children's hair color changes depending on the father so I admit that has influenced my decisions.

I also changed Ricken to a Cavalier because I had too many mages and haven't changed anyone else yet.

This is true, the childeren's coloring takes after the father, the only exeption being Female Morgan, who takes after the mother.

Also, you remind me that I need to think of what I'm gonna change people into to get more skils on them.

So how do you guys manage to keep everyone levelled? My main 9, as I call them, are all basically of the same level (Fredrick excluded considering he starts as a great knight), but the 3 or so I'm not really using (At first, Stahl, who's gotten a few levels now that I've used him in two or so chapters, Sumia, Gaius, and now Mirabelle (I lost the magician who comes with her on that same level they appeared in).

You can't. Unless you use the pop up battles on the maps and the DLC/Spotpass/Streetpass battles to have those you don't use keep up with the rest. Though you'll need to be careful, the Risen can be higher levels than you think.

the risen you summon with the box is level appropriate to which area you are standing at.

so higher chapter = higher level.

Exactally. If you don't remember what chapter that map was, you can be in for a nasty superise. And there is if there are either two Risen or a Risen and a merchant (I don't like fighting with a merchant on the map too, they're way too fragile)

Is this like the ancient stones game where you can give everyone iron weapons and then grind out levels on random encounters then? I disliked the puzzle aspect of most of the other Fire Emblem games where if you make some poor levelling choices early or mid you pretty much make the underlevelled character useless.

No, the "pop up battles" I'm refering to are to completely optional enemies that appear sometimes whenever you are on the map. It is still a Fire Emblem game in every sence. It just gives you a kind of grinding option so that you can fix those 'poor leveling choices'.

Let me just whip out my spreadsheet...

I can't really remember any super-good supports with Cordelia other than Vaike, so I'm no help there. Maribelle on the other hand, I can't think of a bad support with, that girl I like.

Ah, really? I didn't know that, thank you. Yeah, I was planning on putting Maribelle with Donny (if I can get a risen battle in a weaker map) and AHG I FORGOT CHERCHE!!! ... Now that I think about it, I never even looked at any of Cherche's supports in Japanese on Serenes Forest besides her support with Henry....

I haven't paired anyone up yet except Chrom x MU (which makes so much story sense that I refuse to believe that Sumia was intended to be his canon wife).

I'm leaning towards:

Sumia x Freddy (seriously, Sumia has better supports with EVERYONE other than Chrom. They are just so boring together. I really like her with Freddy, though).
Gregor x Panne (hilarious support)
Vaike x Miriel (I love Miriel, and her support with Vaike is really sweet)
Ricken x Maribelle
Nowi x Donnel (gives Nah beastly growths)
Lissa x Lon'qu
Virion x Cherche
Tharja x Libra (not sure about this one. Pairing anyone with Tharja is really hard)
Henry x ??? (the guy's so crazy that I'd feel sort of sorry for the other person)

Also, Freddy isn't really a Jagen. He has good growths. He just levels really slowly as a Great Knight and he's such a beast that he eats all the exp. I reclassed him to Wyvern Rider (after getting Luna) and then to Wyvern Lord and he's absolutely amazing.

By the way, you should sink some time into Donnel. Get him to level 10 (or 15 if you really want underdog) and then reclass him to Mercenary. I promise you won't regret it. My Donny's a Hero now and he can pretty much solo anything. He's almost got better stats than my MU.

One last thing: Galeforce + Lifetaker breaks the game so badly if you've got decent skill.
