One of my friends has the japanese game so I'm somewhat but not completely spoiled on some stuff, from what he has told me of the characters I absolutely adore Virion, but then again Tomokazu Sugita, I'll probably go for Chrom first even though I like Virion more because of spoiler related reasons, after that VIRION and then everyone else. minus Tharja
Okay, so I looked at a list of all of the marriageable characters and...holy shit. Chrom (M) Lissa (F) Frederick (M) Sully (F) Virion (M) Stahl (M) Vaike (M) Miriel (F) Sumia (F) Kellam (M) Donnel (M) Lon'qu (M) Ricken (M) Maribelle (F) Panne (F) Gaius (M) Tiamo (F) Gregor (M) Nowi (F) Riviera (M) Tharja (F) Anna (F) Olivia (F) Cherche (F) Henry (M) Say'ri (F) Tiki (F) Basilio (M) Flavia (F) Lucina (F) Eudes (M) Azur (M) Bredy (M) Degel (F) Cynthia (F) Serena (F) Jerome (M) Chambray (M) Laurent (M) Noir (F) Nn (F) Gangrel (M) Valhalt (M) Emmeryn (F) Lenha (M) Aversa (F) Paris (M) 24 men and 23 women in total. Wow.
That is kind. My my. Oh the people to get to know~ Frankly I don't think there's anything you can add to make me want this more.
Damn, now I know I need to buy this game, I've got my work cut out for me MUST ROMANCE ALL OF THE PEOPLE. This game is going to spoil me. With emotions.
Thanks for the reply, I'm glad it's a temporary inconvenience due to technical limitations rather than overt tone deafness. Do you actually create a character or do you just choose amongst those available? I'm so used to SRPG's being a cast of characters (with fill-ins of generic classes) I was somewhat surprised this was even an option at all.
I don't truck with all of your ^_^ feels and shipping and what have you, but I love me some Fire Emblem FOR THE TACTICS AND GOOD PARTS OF THE STORY and I will probably buy a 3DS for this.
I actually haven't read up much about the game or played the demo. I've only looked at the characters. The reason being is because I know for a fact I'll like the game, so knowing more details about it would spoil it for me. Does anyone else think like that?
Same here. The 3DS isn't even being sold where I live. If this goes on I might just have to permanently relocate to Japan...
On one hand, I already have a 3DS and want this game so badly... On the other hand, I absolutely suck at Fire Emblem. I tried Path of Radiance and then death, death everywhere. As it turns out, "hit things until they die" is not a viable strategy when you are actually able to die. Haha... Maybe I'll just do like I did for Trauma Center, get as far as I can with my legal copy and then use cheats on a rom... Or something...
I've heard that Your MC is absolutely overpowered in this game, so you don't need to worry about dying so much unless you're trying to keep EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR TEAM alive, like any true Fire Emblem player should.
Shadow Dragon is an inferior product with none of the charm and gameplay complexity of later titles. For a GOOD introduction to the series, I would recommend Fire Emblem 7/Blazing Sword/Rekka no Ken, or Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. Also, SD is a bit of an odd bird when it comes to FE titles since contrary to all your instincts as a FE player, SD actually REQUIRES you to kill off characters to unlock certain things. And the whole replacement/reclassing business just makes all your characters seem like replaceable, interchangeable pieces... there's just not as much of an emotional connection. That is not helped by the fact that the characters are also shallow and uninteresting unlike some of the latter titles, since this WAS the first game in the series and the support system and the focus on characterization hadn't really started yet.
Oh I'm loving the gameplay so far. It's one of the things I'm most excited about, since I haven't encountered an SRPG that I can really sink my teeth into for a long time. Everything else is a bonus. You do actually create a character. This character is called "My Unit" (default name is Robin) and is the player's avatar in the game. While Chrom is probably going to be the most important character from a story perspective, Robin is the viewpoint character. Here's a video showing the customization options for a male and female Robin in the Japanese version. FE:A offers a "casual" mode which disables permadeath. Also, you can choose the difficulty independent from that. I've completed the demo on both Normal and Hard (the options are Normal, Hard, and Lunatic) and I didn't lose a single unit. Lunatic kicked my ass, though. MC is pretty powerful, especially if you pick a specialty in magic and use your tome or pick strength and use the sword. And pairing units would completely break the game if the second character always attacked (they don't, I'm not quite sure why). Frederick, though, is far and away the best unit in the demo. He one-shots everything and can cross half the map in one turn.
Yeah, I am quite honestly floored by how many options there are. Will probably spend a long time on that alone. Xd
This. This all day every day. As an impoverished but hardcore FE fan, I had been trying to avoid this thread (since it feels a bit masochistic, to be honest), but the idea of there being some young grasshoppers needing guidance in the FEverse just seduced me. Ana is absolutely right; one of the best introductory games to the series you can get is FE7. It's not my favourite FIRE EMBLEM 4 FOREVER, but it's pretty good and it has all of the elements that people love about the franchise. Please give it a playthrough if you can! It's absolutely worth it. FE8, Sacred Stones would work too I guess. I found it inferior and way too easy, but it wasn't too bad. The worst FE I've ever played has to be FE11, Shadow Dragon. All the love and care that you get towards each individual unit in your team and all that worrying over not letting anyone die... they throw all of it to the bin. They also did the unforgivable sin of botching FE3's story, which I'll never forgive. Seriously, fuck SD.
SS will be always be my favorite but that's because that's where I started, and had the best time, and also finished. All the others I've enjoyed (Minus SD), but have never gotten a chance to finish all the way through.
Some of them are pretty interesting to go back to, such as FE5. Never got to finish it, but I had lots of fun with its ridiculous difficulty spikes. Sacred Stones was... well, the story was pretty alright, but I didn't appreciate how the general difficulty lowered and you suddenly had nonsensical unlockables and easily killable monsters and... yeah. I think it's the only FE in which I've never lost an unit (and then restarted the chapter to recover it, of course), which is both awesome and boring. I did like the new classes and having further choice in specializing your units, though, and also the fact that the resident Jeigan wasn't absolutely useless after hogging exp in the first few chapters, but actually an useful unit. I liked that you could have random units being just as overpowered as the lords, and that healing classes suddenly became really useful. Oh, and speaking of Sacred Stones... Um. Yeah, I'll stop babbling about past games now. :D
So the list Nebty posted didn't include the DLC characters? WELL DAMN I'M GOING TO HAVE FUN WITH THE VARIETY THIS GAME OFFERS IN TERMS LF STRATEGY AND SUPPORTS, THEN. I like Sacred Stones, but I'll admit it's the only one I actually got to watch my brother play. He borrowed it from a friend. He also told me it was the easiest game in the series since it was a way for new fans to get used to the system without too much trouble. I need to play it myself at some point, it looks like fun!
If I had a gameboy advance, i'd be playing my copy as we speak. Only got the 3DS now, though, and I'm so over SD that I don't even know where the cartridge is.
Sacred Stones is a pretty resounding meh for me. The characters are pretty, the gameplay is easy. Not something that I'd ever want to replay, personally. I'd still rate it over SD though. My god what a steaming pile of wyvern turd. I really want to see the capture mechanic get used again in a better-designed FE. I really do. Two words: STAFF PINATAS. STAFF. FRICKING. PINATAS. And maybe the fatigue system, because that really forces you to use all the characters instead of building up an elite A-team of mass murderers. Uh. I can try. We don't have a general Fire Emblem thread? Somebody should start one. :| EDIT: Holy shit in FE2 you actually need to do your own math in combat?! Eff that shit, I'm sticking with reading the LP. :|
I didn't include DLC characters because you can't have supports with them. Also, some of them are free via Spotpass, whereas others you have to pay for. Dunno what the pricing scheme is yet. Here's a list of paid DLC characters (they come with extra scenarios as well). Marth from Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Tsurugi Roy from Fire Emblem: Fūin no Tsurugi Leif from Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 Alm from Fire Emblem Gaiden Micaiah from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. IS IT BAD THAT I RECOGNIZE AND SMILE/FROWN AT EACH ONE OF THESE NAMES? ahahaha what have I done with my life I can see it happening at some point. I mean, they did use a remastered edition of the support system in FE4 for Awakening, so I would expect them to explore other older gameplay mechanics from the past. (?) STAFF PINATAS YAY I'm so excited someone else gets these things you don't know ohh I... damn, I already have a marriage proposal up. Yeah, well...
Ike is much, much more badass in his own game, I assure you. As in, game-breakingly badass. People make challenge just-Ike runs and win.
*gasp* Just noticed that we get Innes and L'arachel! Whooo! I love those guys. I played tSS ages and ages ago and didn't get too far into the game (I think I lost my cart), but I do remember some of the characters.
I loooooove L'Arachel to bits. Favourite Sacred Stones character. I'm really disappointed we're not getting Joshua though. Or Colm, for that matter. All that gorgeous hair... /swoons
Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention that I preordered the game today so that I could secure a copy of the artbook. It's got all kinds of extra character art. Whoa, the dude on the upper left side of the page on the right looks like Nick Fury! I wonder if he's marriageable...
Omg,I want the artbook too,I hope I can get it,it's great you get one. The guy with the patch? His name is Basilio (not sure about the localized name though) and yes he is marriageable but can only be paired with Female Avatar. (he can't reach S support with any other female)
And a guy who isn't a teenager. Truly remarkable =) I like how the options change both the 3D model and the 2d portrait, that's a really nice touch. Has that been a staple of previous fire emblems? I've never seen that before.
Nope, this is the first time you've had a customizable character period, as far as I know. I'm so glad our character can use magic as well as swords, I love mages. I'm probably going to train my main character almost exclusively as a mage. My brother rarely uses mages or archers. He likes myrmidons. I, on the other hand, train as many mages as I can get, making them as badass as possible, often train at least one archer, and love thieves and will train them to be able to take care of themselves and not just steal. (Sothe and Illyana were probably my favorite characters in Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn, both personality wise and to play as.) Myrmidons and pegasus knights are two of my least favorite classes, as they're a pain to train and start out pitifully weak. I know that mages, archers, and thieves are often weak and hard to train too, but for some reason I like them a lot better. I'm not entirely sure why, except that I hate how hard pegasus knight's weakness to arrows makes them to use without getting killed. What does everyone else plan to train their character as and what type of units do you think you'll be using the most?
I'm not awfully familiar with Fire Emblem, but if it's possible, I'd like to stab people with a giant spear while riding a magnificent flying horse. That's an option, right? It sounds marvelous! ... In case you can't tell from my Pokemon escapades, I tend to go with whatever looks good instead of whatever's practical. Taking that into account, I'm going to need some great healers.
I tend to build up heavy fighters for a front line with a few archers and mages for support. Bonus if those heavy fighters are lancers.
Actually myrmidons are often my favorite units becuse they have high speed, good critical hit rate, decent strength, high evasion and almost always attack twice, but I will prefer any unit with high speed no matter the class,if they have high speed it will work for me. I really like that there's a lot to chose from in this game,it will be fun collecting the skills.
So between this game and EO4, I'm probably going to buy a 3DS at some point despite my loathing of 3D and it's nonsense. Curse my primordial need to play every Fire Emblem game and make dungeon maps. At least I can console myself with the fact that I'll be able to make sure that everyone is friends and no one gets married ever. Plus Ike's DLC.
While I like to keep some fast units around for hit-and-run strikes and general terrain control/go back and get the fuckers that just spawned all the fuckway back at the start of the map goddamnit, there's something about the slow march of a line of pure fuck-you-up that I find very soothing.
There's a pre-order artbook for this game? I pre-ordered from Amazon so I don't know if I'll get it. I've had some stupidly bad experiences with Gamesto preorders so I don't do that anymore. I hope I do get it though. As for characters, Ike is actually one my two all time favorite main characters ever (the other being Phoenix Wright) I actually wrote an essay about how he was like my hero back in high school. ...That probably sounds really lame. But it's true, I look up to both of those characters a lot.
