I can answer this! Age 22, when I looked at my signature and realized it looked EXACTLY like it did when I learned cursive in 3rd grade. Like, EXACTLY. And I said screw this, drew the first letter of my last name then a pretty much random scribble. It's significantly less embarrassing.

It wasn't intentional on my part. I used to have a signature where you could make out most of the letters pretty effectively. Then when I was 16 I got a job where I would sign dozens of documents a day. Going from a signature that took 7 seconds and a few dozen muscle twitches to one that took 2 seconds and consisted of about 4 or 5 movements happened slowly over the course of about a year but the progression was irreversible.

Yeah, it wasn't a decision for me so much as a progression into giving less fucks with every passing year. My signature used to be a legible rendering of my first and last names with middle initial. Now it's just a "J" with a bunch of loopy squiggles after it that vaguely approximate maybe four or five letters in my full name.

My maiden name had two lowercase r's next to each other. That's the letter I have the hardest time with. I got tired of making it legible so my last name morphed into a capital first letter with a squiggle after it.

My married name is MUCH easier to sign, and it's pretty and legible. WOOO. Signatures were pretty much the only reason I took a new name.

I have two signatures, an autograph version from back in the days when I would be asked to sign things for random fans of stuff I had worked on. You can read this signature and see that the book/picture/breast that you presented to me has encountered the majestic presence of IainC.

Then I have the signature on the back of my bank card which looks like nothing that any human throat should be able to vocalise.

My signature went to the floor when I started having to endorse 30 or so checks a week for deposit. You quickly stop giving any fucks about anything but the large letters, often that becomes a squiggle with time too.
