There is currently a public debate about the removal of this specific word from Pippi Longstocking. It has been removed by the German publisher; the outcry is about changing what some consider untouchable. The word itself is considered outright racist and unacceptable by most people, but still some think it is fine in "traditional" (read: from their youth) children's books. But it seems the majority of people are mystified by the fact that this hasn't been done ages ago, this is at least my impression.

Edit: Perhaps I should add that there are also people who can't understand why use of this word would be considered racist. But then again there are idiots and assholes everywhere.

There are edited versions of Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn available now, too. I say just put out both versions and let people decide which ones they want to buy.
