    It's appropriate.

The sad thing is that the UMP isn't even the far right in France, it's France's version of the Republicans. The real far right is the FN (Le Pen's party) who sat this one out because they're too busy hating brown people.

My favorite part of the video of the homophobic protest is when the french man in the grey catsuit flaps his brightly colored wings representing the mother and father of an impressionable child after unfurling them to symbolize birth and the removal of the caul.

FAITH IN HUMANITY PARTIALLY RESTORED. Again. Let's see how long this lasts!

But seriously, glad to hear the dog's fine, and I hope the other dogs get a home too.

Update about the UMP and gay marriage : they started a petition asking the government to hold a referendum about gay marriage. I'm sure they hope the majority (that supposedly support gay rights) won't vote, while the bigoted homophobic assholes will fill the ballot box. But the thing is, the governemnt can't do that anyway for it is illegual ! In France, referendum can't be held when it comes to reforms dealing with our social policy. Just like death penalty, gay marriage doesn't have to be approved by the majority to be voted. Of course, the UMP isn't happy with it.

Wait that's AGAINST gay marriage? There's four or five words that come to mind when seeing that and at least 3 of them are synonyms for "gay". I've seen less gay ball juggling contests at "The Man Hole" bar after a Barbra Streisand concert let out.

I cannot watch amateur artsy street theatre and come to grips with it being homophobic. As an American, that makes no goddamned sense to me. I'm with Otterloop here.

Oké Sugar-Junkie, help me out. So I heard a radio segment where a lady (in parliament I think) held a speech for equality. Though she kept being interrupted, she talked over it saying that everyone deserves the right to marry.

    1. Who is this badass? I swear I could hear her flipping everybody who interrupted her off through the radio.

    2. Is paliament alwasy like that? Like, where the dudes all grumble right in the middle of someone speaking?

    2. Yes, especially when it's a woman talking. Sometimes they even sleep, it's fucking annoying to see them behave like kindergarten children.

But damn, that lady does sounds badass.

That's a cultural thing I will never get. A Dutch politician once said 'man' to another politician and everybody in the Netherlands watched in shock and horror. It was seen as an impoverishment of politics. How are you supposed to take politicians seriously if they keep talking over each other? How can you even tell what they are saying? It's also pretty hard to reach a compromise if you don't even know the main arguments of your opponent because you were yelling through their entire speech.

The issue of indecorous behaviour towards female parliamentarians in particular made the news a few months back when a female cabinet minister was hooted and jeered at for... wearing a dress.

The really great part being (as the linked article points out) all of the shit female parliamentarians initially got for wearing pants:

Lady BAMF* starts speaking around 2:15.
I don't know what she's saying (other than support for gay marriage) but I'm sure it's awesome.
It's people like this that help restore my hope for humanity.

(Also, everything before 2:15 may be worth watching for one lady's 'Is this for real?' look on her face. Plus it's fun to compare the general reaction to the man's speech and Taubira's speech.)

    *Christiane Taubira

Edit: Notice how Lady BAMF doesn't need notes.

Lady BAMF got a standing ovation at the end while the other guy got half-hearted claps so I guess it evens out?

Is racism (especially against blacks) prominent in Europe, especially France? I'm aware of what's going on with racial issues in America but not so much in the rest of the world. I've been under the vague and probably incorrect impression that it isn't as bad over there. Then again I live in the southern part of the USA so that may be an unfair comparison.
  37. Randissimo Hatoful Pigeon

Not as much as in America, I think, but still.I think people are more racist against people with arabian origins that against black people, but I'm vampire ass white, so I can't talk about my personal experience and I could be wrong.
