"Dog sentenced death; Tennessee gay"
The sad thing is that the UMP isn't even the far right in France, it's France's version of the Republicans. The real far right is the FN (Le Pen's party) who sat this one out because they're too busy hating brown people.
My favorite part of the video of the homophobic protest is when the french man in the grey catsuit flaps his brightly colored wings representing the mother and father of an impressionable child after unfurling them to symbolize birth and the removal of the caul.
Alligator, I'm crying. There are no words that don't involve incoherency or swearing.
Stop calling the Jackson-Madison County animal shelter — the gay bulldog was adopted hours ago.
HAPPY ENDING GET.
FAITH IN HUMANITY PARTIALLY RESTORED. Again. Let's see how long this lasts!
But seriously, glad to hear the dog's fine, and I hope the other dogs get a home too.
Update about the UMP and gay marriage : they started a petition asking the government to hold a referendum about gay marriage. I'm sure they hope the majority (that supposedly support gay rights) won't vote, while the bigoted homophobic assholes will fill the ballot box. But the thing is, the governemnt can't do that anyway for it is illegual ! In France, referendum can't be held when it comes to reforms dealing with our social policy. Just like death penalty, gay marriage doesn't have to be approved by the majority to be voted. Of course, the UMP isn't happy with it.
For you Flowers :
Wait that's AGAINST gay marriage? There's four or five words that come to mind when seeing that and at least 3 of them are synonyms for "gay". I've seen less gay ball juggling contests at "The Man Hole" bar after a Barbra Streisand concert let out.
To be fair, those people are French.
I love you
Sugar-Junkie please don't hurt me
I cannot watch amateur artsy street theatre and come to grips with it being homophobic. As an American, that makes no goddamned sense to me. I'm with Otterloop here.
Sugar-Junkie, help me out. So I heard a radio segment where a lady (in parliament I think) held a speech for equality. Though she kept being interrupted, she talked over it saying that everyone deserves the right to marry.
1. Who is this badass? I swear I could hear her flipping everybody who interrupted her off through the radio.
2. Is paliament alwasy like that? Like, where the dudes all grumble right in the middle of someone speaking?
1. Probably Christiane Taubira ?
2. Yes, especially when it's a woman talking. Sometimes they even sleep, it's fucking annoying to see them behave like kindergarten children.
Alligator : I love you too :P
Believe me, that's not even half of it. *witnessed a session in the provincial parliament of Ontario; it was... Quite an eye-opener, really*
But damn, that lady does sounds badass.
Ok now... tell me I'm not the only person that is wondering now....
"Just how often does Oterloop find himself at the Manhole after Barbra Streisand concerts to be able to make this observation".
How do you know? You aren't a gaynacologist.
Not often enough to note the correct spelling!!
That's a cultural thing I will never get. A Dutch politician once said 'man' to another politician and everybody in the Netherlands watched in shock and horror. It was seen as an impoverishment of politics. How are you supposed to take politicians seriously if they keep talking over each other? How can you even tell what they are saying? It's also pretty hard to reach a compromise if you don't even know the main arguments of your opponent because you were yelling through their entire speech.
Hence the expression;
"Les hommes sont des enfants."
Meanwhile in moderately Muslim Malaysia:
Sorry, but I just cannot Like.
I guess this is the gay rights in the world thread now since France isn't interesting enough on its own?
I am sorry that you are sorry you can't like it because I don't like it and I like that I don't like it.
The issue of indecorous behaviour towards female parliamentarians in particular made the news a few months back when a female cabinet minister was hooted and jeered at for... wearing a dress.
The really great part being (as the linked article points out) all of the shit female parliamentarians initially got for wearing pants:
Yeah, and that kind of behaviour is a fucking issue when those guys are the one supposed to be the ones leading and protecting our country.
Damnit, France, stop giving the US ideas.
Not that we need help on that front, but jesus cristi.
Lady BAMF* starts speaking around 2:15.
I don't know what she's saying (other than support for gay marriage) but I'm sure it's awesome.
It's people like this that help restore my hope for humanity.
(Also, everything before 2:15 may be worth watching for one lady's 'Is this for real?' look on her face. Plus it's fun to compare the general reaction to the man's speech and Taubira's speech.)
Edit: Notice how Lady BAMF doesn't need notes.
Rot I can whip up a translation if you want me too, it will probably be grossely inaccurate but...
I can translate!
Old white guy: On behalf of old white dudes everywhere, I resent anyone trying to share in the privilege I was awarded by virtue of being born a white cisgendered male to a middle or upper class family!
Lady BAMF: FUCK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!
I guarantee no level of accuracy.
Alligator : that's actually very accurate.
I'd love a translation as long as it's not too much trouble
Alligator that is fantastic! I'm sure while not accurate you managed to capture what was said in-between the lines.
That's because homophobia/heterosexism knows no nationality! :D
I'm not sure whether it would be right to like this or not.
On one hand beautiful snark but on the other hand it's funny because of it's terrible truth./conflicted
Trolling as performance art?
The reactions are fucking ridiculous. When the old white dude talks you have that amazing 'the fuck you talking about' look, but no one interrupts him. Then a (black! zomg) woman starts talking and all the other old white dudes have a massive fit. Goddamn it.
Lady BAMF got a standing ovation at the end while the other guy got half-hearted claps so I guess it evens out?
Is racism (especially against blacks) prominent in Europe, especially France? I'm aware of what's going on with racial issues in America but not so much in the rest of the world. I've been under the vague and probably incorrect impression that it isn't as bad over there. Then again I live in the southern part of the USA so that may be an unfair comparison.
I can vouch for this.
My God, can I go and hug Lady BAMF? I just.
I'm tearing up, that was beautiful.
Was I really that close? I swear I know no French beyond words it has in common with English.
Not as much as in America, I think, but still.I think people are more racist against people with arabian origins that against black people, but I'm vampire ass white, so I can't talk about my personal experience and I could be wrong.
Working on the translation, expect it tomorrow with luck.
Massive points for the dismissive mic drop at the end.
English coverage of a later speech she gave in the same vein:
Separate names with a comma.
