Gay mariage, or "how to make Sugar realize her compatriots are biggoted assh*les"

Just learned they actually closed the restaurant, they said they wanted to make an exemple and show that they wouldn't put up with this kind of shit.

But that's not right either, what about the employees who had nothing to do with that asshole. One reprimand and one firing seems enough in this case, unless there's something I'm missing.

Edit: Though I'm guessing there were probably some financial motives as well. I'm not sure how Subway manages it's different international branches, but I doubt they would close shop because of just this.

Yup, I think it's meant to be a warning to the other owners (aaand also probably a commercial gesture) but I do hope they'll offer other job opportunities to the employees, because that's not fair either.

Yeah, I'm. Surprised they went that far, that's really unfair unless all of the employees were of the same opinion.

And anyway, how do you determine that ? As an employee, even if I disagreed with my boss, I just couldn't bitch about them in front of the clients, and if I really needed the money, I wouldn't be able to resign...

My best guess is that Subway didn't feel like going through a long procedure to kicking the owner to the curb (though, again, I don't know Subway's policies on this) and just cut it loose coming off clean, doing a little PR stunt about a pro-gay standpoint, giving no shits about the employees at all. This opinion may be clouded by my "DAMN YOU EVIL CORPORATIONS" tendencies. What can I say, I'm just a hippie after all.

I can sort of understand closing it. I know it sucks for the employees, who probably had nothing to do with it, but when you're a franchise owner of a major restaurant chain, doing anything that reflects badly on the company as a whole is basically like firing an employee for doing something that makes a small business look bad. They can't replace the owner, so yeah, I don't see what's wrong with making an example out of him.

I do at least hope that Subway does something for the employees.

Fuck those people who think you need a man and woman to raise a child. There are gay parents out there who would probably make better parents than some people. There are people who are being denied because they are gay. I'm just sick of all of the homophobia.

Real insemination is legal now. These guys are worried about artificial insemination, as one might find in certain underground slash zines depicting insemination. We can't have this escalated into photoshops or even full CGIs! And drawings of surrogate mothers are right out.

I don't remember seeing anything like this in other countries that were on the cusp of marriage equality.

Yeah, here in the United States we just have people being violent (whether verbally or physically) to non-straight people all the time instead of just when a bill is being passed.

Oh, in case anyone missed it, a Gay Marriage bill passed in Parliament in NZ this week with a broad majority from across the parties. Everyone promptly looked at each other and said "what's the big fuss?" and life carried on.
