Harvest Moon is a game about farming and dating

Oh it's ok, you don't have to play them all to be a fan. I do highly recommend DS Cute though/ shameless advertising

I literally just bought myself a copy of ANB.

And I don't even have my 3DS yet.

(none of the stores I visited had Zero Escape or Layton, sadface)

I didn't remember that ANB was the 3DS one despite buying it at launch. I have no idea how it is because I still have not managed to pay attention long enough to get through the interminable tutorial segment. However long you think it is, it's longer than that.

Well, it's certainly taking me longer than that.

On one hand, I hate nonoptional tutorials, especially when they last more than the first few days or so. On the other hand, customizable characters and commitment rings.

They sound so shinny :o

Not to mention expensive. My meager farmer's salary cannot possibly afford me the luxury of such things. At least, not until I have some Alpacas D:

I'm all for hugs! In fact, have one yourself, because yaaay someone else who's as asdhasjalfkf over it as I am! I watched a video of the first animated cutscene that had Phoenix and Maya in it dozens of times, squealing like a little girl all the way because 1) animated AA hell yeah! and 2) Maya's Japanese voice is perfect.

Just so you know, the 'save wherever you want' bit sold me on ANB. And it's more a problem of getting me not to hoard things than the opposite, so that sounds like no problem at all! :D

I still remember my first time playing it was HM:64 and I was playing on a friends file. I had no idea what I was doing and killed all her plants and animals. Yep. I was an awesome farmer back when.

My favorites right now are probably HM:64 and AP, and I wish they would redo HM:64 someday. *sigh* that wish will probably never come true.
Seriously, I got a Wii just for the purpose of buying AP though. xD Although I still haven't beaten the full game yet...*eyes Wii since I'm on break on*

I enjoyed playing Save the Homeland too, the characters, design, and general idea was really awesome! I will you would have had like a full 12 months or something to cycle through the game...or had three years like you normally did. I finished one quest and then basically threw the controller on the ground when I realized I had to start ALL OVER. Still, I love these series. So much. <3

I think any pace will seem much faster in comparison to ToTT. What have you done to me. ToTT? I used to play entire years in only two or three days in other games but now if I manage to get through one in-game year in less than a month I feel like speedy gonzalez D:

Eh, there are multiple reason, most of which I explained on Ushi (except I can't find the posts, so I can't be lazy and just quote them here... >>;; ) I'd be lying if I said some of it wasn't purely physical because damn do I have a glasses fetish, but I also do like his personality. See, I'm the type of person who says "terrible" things to my friends as jokes. I have one friend who I drive to church most weekends and it's become a running gag between us that when I get to her house to take her home, I say, "get out." I can say that sort of thing with a straight face, but it doesn't mean I'm being mean, even though it might seem that way to outsiders, but because she understands that I'm just teasing her, she doesn't mind and even will respond in kind ("fine, I'm leaving!")

I like to imagine my character, Nina, and Allen having this kind of relationship, where they often tease each other and I think there's some evidence in the text to support reading their interactions this way. If there's a mutual understanding between two people, then even the stuff that he says isn't terrible, anymore than it's terrible for a tsundere to call the person they like an idiot. So yeah, Allen is self confident and sassy, but that doesn't mean he's abusive. He could certainly be read this way, but it's not how I read him. And I don't think that either reading is incorrect. Rather, the player character is an OC, so you have to imagine their reactions and decide for yourself how they would feel about Allen.

Also, Allen's pretty cute sometimes. Some of the things he says kind of make me melt~

Did anyone else have issues with Sunshine Islands? The point system for crops, sun stones, the islands in general...it was surprisingly tough for a HM game...

Ahhh... I remeber my first harvest moon: FoMT I spent 3 entire seasons trying to romance Popuri's mom,because I thought she was her older sister and Rick was this guy that was just there and worked for them.Never even ocurred to me that the little heart in the girl's portraits actually meant something and so I ended up as VERY rich forever alone guy,good times.

Let's just say that I only grew crops in the greenhouse because the points system was making me want to break my DS. I never got to collect all the suns (I was so close though! I had a list of the ones I already collected and how to get the others but making friends with the towns people and reaching all of the other goals was impossible difficult) I got pretty far before I dumped it for ToTT though.

IoH is actually one of my favorite Harvest Moons, though a large part of that probably has to do with Elliot. <3 There's always something to do! I didn't like Sunshine Islands as much though because the "upgrades" they made felt pretty half assed. I mean, the controls, for one thing. The way they did them was a lot more frustrating than the IoH controls, in my opinion since you were constantly forced to switch between touching and traditional controls. Some people really hated the IoH controls, but at least they were consistent. SI took away all my favorite things about the IoH controls and it was just annoying. It also doesn't help that I hate when artificial limits are put on your progression in Harvest Moon or when you're required to do A., B., and C. to do something relatively simple. I haven't minded this so much in A New Beginning since the vast majority of the goals aren't super hard or connected to your playtime (and in most of the cases where they are, you can bypass them with multiplayer), but the first season in the game was pretty hard to get through, as you basically couldn't do anything until Rebecca got there on the 25th. That was also the biggest failing with ToTT; you could only get one upgrade a season, meaning you'd have to play for years and years and years if you wanted to completely upgrade our farm. There was no point to it, it was just to make the game longer. I don't mind goals, but when there are too many of them or they're too hard and it keeps you from progressing, it gets frustrating. I know a lot of people liked it, but HMDS is actually one of my least favorite games since you have to collect so many sprites just to get married.

I felt like games like Island of Happiness, A New Beginning, and Animal Parade hit a sweet spot, where it wasn't too hard, but also didn't leave you bored quickly because there wasn't enough to do, though at times A New Beginning is kind of pushing it, especially with how long it takes to unlock Amir and Sanjay.

(By the way, there is a system to make crops much easier in IoH/SI, but it takes some work upgrading tools. Still, if anyone's interested, I'd be happy to go into it.)

I would have to disagree about Island of Happiness not getting boring quickly. After marriage and unlocking all of the town expansions, which only took maybe one in-game year, there was nothing to do. I stopped playing after that. I didn't really like the farming because of the sun and water points system, but I think the mining was the reason that I played for as long as I did.

I liked DS Cute because there was so much to do even after you got all of the sprites you needed to save the goddess and got married. You could try to find all of the cursed tools in the mines, go play at the harvest sprite casino and unlock all of the cool items they had, etc. It was just really fun.

Ah, maybe it was that I hated mining in DS/DS Cute and I didn't mind it that much in IoH. Yeah, I'm well aware my opinion on IoH is not a popular one, but it's how I honestly feel. I wonder if all my posts on Ushi defending IoH are still around. I'm sure I had a lot more to say, but it's been quite some time since I've played IoH or SI, so I don't remember a lot of it.

I'm not saying that I didn't like IoH, I'm actually one of the few people I know who enjoyed playing it, I just would have liked it a lot more if it was a little longer. In it's defense, I do tend to do everything obsessively. My first file is my practice file and in the second one I try to make it as perfect as possible, which inevitably means I'll finish the game a lot faster.

For some reason, I feel as if characters with insufferable personalities are appealing to a lot of people. (See: Skye) I wish I could see Allen in the same positive light that everyone else does but to no avail. I think it might be that to most people confidence is super attractive. For me, it's the opposite (oh why was there no option to play as a girl to marry Kross why)

A friend just spent the last fifteen minutes selling me on A New Beginning, so now I guess I have to get it. Town-building! I love town-building! Nothing makes me so happy in a game as starting in some sort of post-apocalyptic/shipwreck/after-the-dark-lord razed world, and needing to work out how to build basic workshops so that I can make other things so that I can make other things and also growing stuff and animals and and--okay. So I play a lot of Minecraft. But still! It sounds like fun!

I'd actually kinda sworn off Harvest Moon games for a while. I keep picking the wrong ones, when I go grab some title I haven't played yet and try to give it a shot. One of them--I don't remember the name--started with a lengthy sequence of injokes about an earlier Harvest Moon game I hadn't played, and Animal Parade... Grrr. Animal Parade.

I was so, so excited to get that game, because I was looking forward to riding my zebra everywhere. It had a zebra on the cover, and it was all "Make friends with wildlife! Then ride them!" and I went oh my god ZEBRA yes I will finally have a RIDING ZEBRA and I got the game and played it and frowned at it and started searching through various walkthroughs, and discovers there IS NO ZEBRA.

I think that's the only Harvest Moon game I've actually rage-quit.

Er. Anyway. Mostly I play the Rune Factory ones, because I'm a sucker for crafting, so I love being able to make my own equipment. And especially Tides of Destiny, because 1) giant stone mecha stomping around!, and 2) combat that looks cool without being hard, and 3) I can make a bunch of adorable hats in my workshop and then make every single person in town wear them. And it'll show up on their character in-game and in dialogue. Aw yeah.

Anyway. Harvest Moon. Lovely series, yes.

What about that tech-ish spinoff? Innocent Life, or something like that, where I think you play a robot? Was that one any good?
