I guess it qualifies as mildly interesting that I spent several hours over the weekend being creeped out by older women who insisted on being a little too complimentary. Drunk woman who has known me since I was 5, yes, I understand perhaps you think I am "handsome", but saying it once was enough. Twice was getting bad, then making my wife uncomfortable by overplaying the "YOU ARE SO LUCKY" card...yeah. Eugh.

Nothing in comparison to my mother's other friend, who insisted on pointing out that I have a "sexy voice" at least three times over the course of the day. You are not drunk, lady. You are just creepy.

RyanMM , while what you suggested didn't work, I could still just outright kiss you for bothering to answer.
In the end, a single USB port began to work when I started switching things around. Then another one. Using my keyboard and my drawing tablet (I REALLY LOVE THAT THING NOW BTW), I got Elyscape into my computer's head and he deleted a looooot of things in Device Manager. Lots and lots and lots of copies of HID things with little yellow triangles next to them.

Now I'm right back to square one with needing to uninstall and scan drivers for my keyboard and tablet to work when I restart my computer, but it's much better to have a mouse than it is to have a keyboard when it comes to navigation. <33

I went to Canada for a week for a skiing vacation. Didn't break anything or comeback with any injures, so that's a plus. Unfortunately I beginning to think I'm the anti-snow. The area hadn't seen an honest snowfall in a month, though the mountains were adequately covered (the same couldn't be said for last years trip) but back home the snow-drought was broken with an epic storm.

Banff. The daily highs were a touch above freezing and the lows a touch below. It was relatively balmy for what I was expecting. Still better than Park City last year which had highs in the 50's.

Every bar I went to this weekend sounded like it should be a gaybar but wasn't. Back Door, Logjams, the list goes on. Now that I think about it, maybe they were, but my looks are slipping.

I also spent Saturday night watching The Walking Dead with a bunch of showgirls. They showed me dirty internet videos. It was basically reddit, but with actual human beings.

While I was on stage, a guy in the crowd stole his friend's prosthetic leg and handed it to me. I asked some questions. It was revealed that sometimes they fill it with beer and that is all I feel needs to be said.

Thanks to exposure to the internet, I cannot read "Banff" with out thinking "BAMF" or possibly "Bad Ass Nutter Fluffer."

Also, "Nutter Fluffer" must be the most ridiculously obscene-sounding snack food name ever that doesn't actually mean anything obscene. (I guess a lot of folks call it Fluffer Nutter, which is not quite as bad...)

Yeah, Fallout 2 introduced me to what a fluffer is. And has ruined the word for me ever since.
  13. MrsWidget Keeper of the Elemental Materials

I know about fluffers, but it seems like a Nutter Fluffer is worse than a Fluffer Nutter. But... I don't want to go down that semantic path.

On my way to getting certified in all Dell everything via the atrociously slow Dell field tech web portal thing for a job I just got. Hour long mind-numbing tests with questions not like "to remove your Inspirion's demons do you: (A) call a priest (B) use your blessed compressed air can (C) take it to the landfill or (D) make sure you Proton Pack is charged and throw down the ghost trap." Those questions would be awesome and I would pass with flying colors. Once these tests are completed I will show up at various offices and swap out boards n shit. BORING but no co-workers!

To make it less boring I'll just pretend I'm doing corporate espionage under the guise of pc repair since my job involves pickup/drop locations and no physical office to work from.

I'm setting up a rig with Intel Rapid Start Technology enabled for SSD caching and HOLY SHIT massive geekboner right now. Ridiculously fast startup times and responsiveness. Paired with Windows 8, this is the fastest system I've put together and it's just an i5 with 4GB of RAM, but it screams.

I've often considered going through that process but no one has made it clear what benefit it would give me/my clients. Do you have any details on how that program works?

RyanMM, the company I'm working for set some account for me on the Dell DTT website. I'm not sure if you have to pay for it or something. I'm guessing they're having me do it because I'll be a contractor doing Dell field tech work and it meets some official requirements for liability or something.

The way it works is you get 2 hours to take 40 question tests on the inner workings of Dell computers, ie "do you need to remove the optical drive to access the front fans on a Dell model Synergy WTF9000." There are open-book or rather open web page tests so the only knowledge you need before starting is a basic understand of how the parts fit together and what mobo beeps mean and all that stuff you're probably familiar with. The only hard part is navigating the Dell diagrams and info pages so it's not really hard at all.

If you're mostly working on home and small business computers I'm not sure what advantages it'd give you unless you're taking on some fierce competition. This is my introduction to corporate tech support so I'm fuzzy on how it all works.

Here's the lowdown on Dell DTT.

tl:dr if you already know how to fix various systems then you probably don't need it. I'm not really the person to ask, though.

So my son(13) walked in holding the season 1 dvd of "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" and asked what it was like. Told him he'd like it. A couple of hours later he walked back in, laughing his head off and asked if we had anything of The Goon Show. He's now reading The Goon Show Scripts.

So they can now be added to the list of The Young Ones, Bottom, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, The Mighty Boosh, Hitchhiker's Guide, Black Books, I.T. Crowd, Spaced, QI, Bill Bailey and Dylan Moran that he's now obsessed with. There's quite a few more I need to get him hooked on, but thanks to those he now calls the puppy "a tale with an idiot attached" and wished he was white so he could call him an "alabaster idiot".

My job as a parent is done.

We have it, and it's on his (long) list, but he hasn't gotten to that yet. It's a slow process as he has to absorb everything he can about one show before moving on to the next (part of being Autistic I guess.)

So. Testing a nice new 240 GB SSD I decided to take the plunge and switch to Win 8 - I haven't done so yet, because we mainly use 7 at work and I use the machine for screenshots when working at home. And because while nice, too few things had changed for me to want to reinstall everything I use... and it wouldn't update (I also don't like updating and prefer to start from scratch with a new OS).

So of course I plan to dual boot to slowly ease into the switch. But while inserting the SSD, I accidently unplug the other SSD, so when I install dual boot isn't an option, because the install doesn't see the old OS. I plug it in and try a new install twice (it's my fastest OS upgrade ever), but the damage is done and the only way I can dual boot is by physically unplugging the new SSD... so I guess I'm on 8 now.

My credit card has been completely paid off as of 10 minutes ago. While in school, I basically lived off the thing and have been paying it down since I graduated in 2011. All I have left is to pay off the emergency line of credit I opened before I went back to school and I will be completely debt free (until I decide to do something stupid like buy a house or new car*).

Obviously however people would go about it, we'd have to sing SwitchKnitter Day carols; which would apparently consist of fast-paced industrial music and electronica.

SATA-cables are loose as fuck, so when I switched out a 60 GB SSD for the new 240 GB SSD I wanted to install Windows 8 on, I nudged the cable to the 120 GB SSD with Windows 7. When installing I didn't notice in the list of drives (I have 6) that one was missing.
    Boring really.
