Help me connect my Xbox 360

We have a new Panasonic flat-screen TV, and I'm connecting all our various gadgets and consoles to it. The 360 had been connected to our old tv's component inputs via the Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable. However, when I try to use that cable to connect to the new TV, the screen looks like this:

The correct source is selected on the TV. If I connect via HDMI and choose that as the source, it looks great. However, I need to use the component cable if possible because of the video capture device I use with the 360.

Any ideas? Is this component cable with the 360 incompatible with newer TVs?

Did you flip the little switch on the cables to HD? Its on the little gray box thing where the Xbox connector is (on the cable, not on the Xbox).

You should have one of these you have to connect. Then just make sure it's switched to "Game".

Here's a crummy picture, it's dark in there.

Yeah. Switching it to TV makes the picture clear but in B&W. Switching it back to HDTV makes the picture break up again (after the 360 reboots, of course).

Does your 360 have an HDMI port? If so, I'd shell out the $5 for an HDMI cable and use that.

    .
I am going to have to use HDMI for now, but I'd prefer not to for the reason articulated in the OP.

No worries. Partner has the TV tied up right now playing Mass Effect, but once she's done I'll plug the cable box into the TV's component jacks to see if the jacks might be bad. I'll also pick up a cheap replacement cable.

DUH. I got it fixed. I had the wrong input type selected for those component jacks (they double as composite).

Also, I failed to have an Atari TV switch box. Thanks, everyone!

    Arise, dumb girl thread!

We got a new 360, and I've moved the old one to my home office. The new one is connected to the TV via HDMI, which also delivers sound to the TV. We don't want the sound from the TV, because I also have digital optical running from the 360 to my receiver. So we're getting 5.1 surround + TV speakers.

Other than just muting the TV, is there a way to tell the Xbox to send sound exclusively through the DO and not to the TV via HDMI? I'm not seeing a lot of audio options on the 360 itself.

    It should be:
System Settings -> Console Settings -> Audio -> Digital Output -> Dolby Digital 5.1
Let me know if that doesn't work and I'll do some more digging.

No dice. It was already on that. Hmm.

I asked the same q on the Xbox forums and was told that since HDMI delivers Dolby audio, my only option is going to be to mute the TV. I need to see if my Harmony remote can do that.

Actually, I could just disable the TV speakers altogether, assuming that's an option on that TV. Audio from the cable box and PS3 are running to the receiver anyway.

Pretty sure that's not the case, but I'll get back to you on that.

I use optical on mine, you basically can either rip the casing off of your AV cable and plug in HDMI and that at once and do it or go buy a $5 MadCatz one that just has the port on it already. If you need further help this ginger kid will provide it
