I know this is a super long shot, but it's been bugging me. It's a sci-fi short story, and I'm pretty sure it's part of an anthology. All I remember is that it's a pair of people trying to hunt/chase another pair of people through caverns/a fortress, looking for a macguffin of some type. Ring any bells? I don't read a lot of anthologies/compendiums, so it may have been part of Year's Best Sci-fi by Dozois or (less likely) a compendium of shorts by a single author. EDIT: Found it on my Kindle by scanning every short story I have...it's Inevitable by Sean Williams. Whew!
I had more detail but then slapbone made me feel guilty so I took out the specifics after I found the story in place. NEVER MIND!
Is it a good short story, though? Should I seek out more of the same from Sean Williams? (And what is part of a collection?)
I think that Gardner Dozois' anthologies are some of the best you can find. If I'm jonesing for sci-fi I usually just end up grabbing his Year's Best anthology and that keeps me occupied for a week.
Ah, I've read a couple of those. I am a slow reader so I'm good for at least three weeks with each. Also, I went to see if any of the Dozois anthologies were on kobo.com and entered 'best sci fi' as the search term. Among the first six results: Alien Sex Slave (Sci-Fi Menage Erotica) Science Friction (Sci-Fi Tentacle Sex Erotica) - Sci-Fi Gay Tentacle Sex Erotica Breeding at the End of the World (Post-Apocalyptic Erotic Romance)(erotica, menage, breeding gangbang, sex, impregnation, sci-fi, creampie, gangbang, breeding erotica, breeding menage) Searching by name produced more relevant if less colorful results. And as it turned out, it's a different anthology of Dozois's, The New Space Opera 2, that contains "Inevitable".
ah cool, LOL, believe me at the library I've had people come up with even less detail and want to know what book they read four years ago! "It had a blue cover..." p.s. at least 50% of the time they remember the color wrong
