I love Louis CK but I can't watch this show anymore. It just straight up makes me depressed and uncomfortable.
Yes his show makes me feel uncomfortable too. I'm not a huge fan, but his show feels more like reality, then reality shows. I like that
I just don't like being preached at every fucking episode, so I stopped watching midway through that horrible second season. Jesus Christ, buy the guy a pulpit. His sermons are damn tiresome. Not every episode has to be an after school special.
Apparently, this week's after school special message was "don't be a dick, no one will come to your funeral" and "pooping in the tub is gross."
You know how you can tell that Louis C.K. is the greatest at all of the things that he does? He wrote and performed a segment with Marc Maron in which Marc Maron wasn't the biggest asshole. That's some Copperfield shit right there.
So Louis C. K. is hosting SNL tonight. I heard of this just now from his mailing list e-mail, but as I don't have plans tonight I may actually watch SNL for the first time in forever.
Yes. Tonight he is hosting. Also, just so we know, next season of Louie has been delayed until 2014 because he doesn't want it to turn into a chore.
His opening monologue was as I expected: a "Hey, hi there, how are you all doing?" and then basically just stand-up. Which is exactly what I was hoping for anyway, and so far has been the highlight. It's weird to watch him in the skits, though. When his whole persona is based around playing "himself," actually seeing him adopt a character is eerie and off-putting.
He played a character on Parks & Recreation. Hilariously, too. I spent way, way too much time trying to figure out if the lead singer of fun was dressed like Jon Cryer from Pretty In Pink on purpose or not.
I missed the monologue because I haven't watched SNL in so long that I forgot they start at 11:35. The Lincoln/Louie thing was clever and well done but didn't make me laugh out loud, and the rest of it was the usual (ie the reason I haven't watched SNL in a decade). I wouldn't say it was weird watching him play a character on the Fox and Friends segment, but I would say it wasn't good. Fortunately this was the one night of the year when I do get that hour of my life back.
I thought the very last sketch, in the bar, was pretty funny because it played into his stand-up and the kind of situations he talks about. Next to the monologue I thought it was the best part of the show.
Ehhhhhhhhhhh...... Maybe at the time (was his first appearance on there prior to Louie?) it was better, but coming to P&R after having watched two seasons of Louie made it utterly impossible to understand him as a different character. I've got the SNL recorded but unwatched (along with every other SNL from the past forever that I keep thinking I'll get around to watching), so maybe it's just that particular character, but I'm dubious. An awful lot of his show plays into the fact that he's kind of an average middle-aged pear-shaped loser when he's doing anything other than comedy (a role he does very well), and I don't remember ever seeing him venture much outside of that.
You're dubious he played a character on Parks & Recreation? Also, your inability to recognize actors as different people has very little to do with Louis CK.
I don't know what the man is like personally and I assume that any time he's on a camera doing a fictionalized anything he's portraying something other than his actual day-to-day identity, but the character on Parks and Recreation felt very similar to the character on Louie to me.
Similar, sure. I'm not saying he's Gary Oldman or whatever. But on Parks & Rec, he played a cop that talks, acts and thinks nothing like the Louie on the show Louie.
My wife and I saw him tonight. He KILLED. I was actually a little concerned I wouldn't enjoy it as much as his earlier sets because of the big shift in the tone of his show but the full hour of material was brilliant.
Hey, me too!! I agree with everything you say. And I thought his encore material was especially brilliant . . .
can you specify a bit what you mean by shifting tone? he doesn't play switzerland, so I'll need to wait until he puts stuff up on his site to watch it.
If you've watched the last season of Louie you'll know what I mean. While the show was never strictly a comedy it still had some very funny moments that sheared closely to the topics of his comedy. The last season had no funny parts and was mostly creepy and way more dark than normal. His set on the other hand felt like a continuation of his previous work. There was still a dark and crass edge to the material but it was still easy to laugh at. The show just turned into something uncomfortable to watch.
