(Actually I went sleighing with the girls while testing a GoPro camera - and then while goin on an unstearable sleigh shaped like a disc we rolled over and my oldest hurt her arm so badly, that a visit to the emergency room was necessary - so I did have the pleasure of driving in an almost snowstorm... police wasn't telling people to stay home, just not to do any unnecessary driving. Apart from a nice slide in the first crossing everything was fine and the only idot was the BMW-driver - what else? - who felt that 85 km/h on a snowcovered freeway was too slow and overtook me to the right, when I was just about to pull in after overtaking a truck. Interesting times. The arm was fine)

Of course the media went apeshit:

I am blissfully unaware of winter in the northern hemisphere. In fact I'm pretty sure it might be spring since the clover starting to bloom now, and that's the only time our yard ever looks green instead of brown. We've got some other flowers blooming now too, and the ice plant has revived and started to bloom as well.

The snails are also coming out. I hate that, only because I inevitably step on several by accident :(

    p.s. i drive a bmw

Speaking of stepping on things -- anoles (tiny lizards) here in Florida seem to get their thrills from running right in front of someone walking. Or, worse, ducking right in front of moving bike tires. I have never actually run over or stepped on one, but as an animal lover those little bastards have nearly given me heart attacks more times than I can count. Lucky for them, they're cute.

Heh. You're going to love winter in Pennsylvania. Please, for the sake of your neighbors, go practice driving in snow at a large, empty parking lot. That's how we all learned, but we were 16 at the time and it was fun.

I know how to drive in snow! I grew up in Missouri :P

I also know how to drive on ice.

The apparently unfortunate part is that my car is rear-wheel drive. This has only ever been a problem for me once, when trying to go over a snow pile from plows that had gone through the neighborhood while my car was parked on the street. I managed to get one of the rear wheels into the air and had to ask neighbors to help me free it. Otherwise, I like driving it just fine. But everyone seems to like to tell me that RWD IS THE MOST HORRIBLEST THING EVER IN THE SNOW and I just don't understand what they are talking about.

I bet you have the best winters, and I don't mean that sarcastically.

It's currently -26°C, and when I'm outside I can feel my nose hairs freezing into little icicles every time I breathe in.

It's currently 8C, to use your funny numbers, has been rainy and grey the past week. Yesterday I did not need a jacket to go outside. Little nose hair icicles sounds pretty neat.

So apparently this year it won't snow at all until after Christmas where I live. This is kind of a disappointment, but I do like the 12C we had today (even if tomorrow it'll be back to sub-zero).

Usually I just exclude myself on the basis that mine is 15 years old and the "real douchebags" would never own anything older than five years.

There are days in Canada that it doesn't snow?

At first I thought 'is he being sarcastic? 8 inches is nothing to sneeze at!' and then I thought 'why does his ruler stress that 10 there instead of the 12 above it?' and then I thought 'oh, wait, I'm an idiot'.

So the weather people said there was going to be a mix of rain and snow last night, then rain until Wednesday or Thursday.

Woke up today and everything is coated in ice. The dog slipped on the front walk and went down, and she has four legs which give her a bonus +2 against tripping!

We got down to the end of the block and I called bullshit on the dog walking because it was so icy. I turned around and started heading toward home. The dog got the message, pooped, and we came back in. The grass crunches and shatters. All the tree branches are weighed down with ice.

It's after 1pm and it hasn't melted. The roads seem clearer, but I have a feeling we're in for some power outages in the area.

There's barely an inch and a half of accumulation in the city. The entire public transit system is basically shut down. I managed to get on a bus that was already 45 minutes delayed with a route somewhat close to work and texted in with "Will be somewhat delayed" and a few minutes later "Fuck it proceeding on foot IT IS ADVENTURE TIME."

Got in only twenty minutes behind schedule. Me: 1, Mild Winter Weather: NOTHING!
  34. Jamie Madigan Armchair Designer

Well, they're sending us home from work and telling us to telecommute for the balance of the day. And probably tomorrow, but I was scheduled to telecommute then, anyway. Not sure if I hope my kids' school is cancelled or not, since I had been roped into showing up there for an hour to help run a holiday party for 13 kindergardeners.

I was going to be embarassed with you, but in hindsight I don't mind it so much. People should ask questions about things they don't understand and that can be answered scientifically. I've heard many times news people talk about the equivalent nukes to a hurricane's energy so it seems like a kind of obvious if naive question.

It would be more embarassing to ask why don't we just kill the hurricanes with kindness. ;)

Took to the snowblower into the blizzard this morning, in an attempt to get at the snow before it got too deep. Turns out, it's a mixture of snow and rain (thunder and lightning all over the place last night). This means my little two-stroke snowblower can't really do much more than act as a mini-plow and push it around. The rotors don't even turn with that massive amount of slush (about 11" deep right now).

So, I have to call someone in to drive his snowplow over. Luckily, I know the guy, and it's only going to be 30.00. The regular removal services are charging more than twice that, today.

We got teased with about 1/2 inch of snow yesterday morning that turned to rain by 10AM and the rain hasn't stopped. It is so soggy outside right now.

I'm hoping it will ease up a little bit later so that I won't get completely soaked when I chop wood. :(

I used to ask this question all the time, because it seemed almost perfect (although my explosive of choice was a fuel-air explosive in this scenario) - it's nice to see the actual math for why it wouldn't work.
