I think we need a WEATHER thread

The snow hit me in the eye! But I still love it. It's coming down pretty well in Cleveland right now. It's a bit too warm to be sticking much, but we should get a few inches over the next day or so...just in time for Christmas!

It snowed here on Tuesday and Wednesday. Then it rained all day Thursday. Thursday night the temperature dropped to 0. Getting to my car this morning was interesting. Trying to get in was a hoot as the water from the rain had quite literally turned my car into a giant novelty ice cube. Hooray!

I have a serious question, having never lived in snowy areas as an adult -- what do your bosses expect you to do in that kind of weather? I mean, here everything's called off during a hurricane, and sometimes even in really bad tropical storms...
  4. Athryn Despondent Fancybear

It usually depends on if the roads are plowed, like here in the DC area during snowmageddon a couple of years ago, a lot of people had to stay home because they couldn't leave their neighborhoods.

It depends. I don't actually know our company's inclement weather policy, but this week wasn't nearly bad enough to not come in. An inch of snow on the ground isn't quite the same thing as a hurricane :).

They will generally cancel school if it's threatening to be really bad. It used to be all tough guts because it's college and most of the kids live on campus, then about 10 years ago (?) a young faculty member died in a car accident going home in bad weather. Now they're much more cautious.

My wife works a real job(tm) in the city. When bad weather is imminent they tell them to "work from home" which means she has her meetings via conference call and if she's gotten the files off the server and taken them home she gets real work done. If not, she just has meetings and email.

I worked in a retail furniture warehouse and at a UPS warehouse. Their policy is that if you don't show up, it's an unexcused absence. Get enough of those and you're fired. They were (somewhat) lenient on being late, so long as you weren't too late.

We can work remotely, so not making it to the office is understandable, but we can still work as long as the network behaves. For most businesses around here, they'll close early or open late if it's REALLY bad, but it has to be REALLY bad - it's only happened to me three times in my entire life. Otherwise, if you don't make it in, ok, but you have to use a sick day.

I've never gotten a day off of work or school due to weather in my life. Got to love California :)

I think the store I worked at closed early on the day of the 1989 earthquake, Rodney King riots (we had somewhat significant disturbances in Berkeley), and 1991 Oakland Hills fire, though. For the riots and the fire, I was working 2 jobs at the time, though, so I just went to my second job (at a local newspaper, so we had plenty to do).

So, I'm hearing rumors of a possible Nor'easter hitting around Thursday.

Anyone have any corroborating information on this?
  12. Athryn Despondent Fancybear

My family and I spent about a half hour in my parents' new tornado shelter as some "strong rotation" bore down on the little town in which they live. It missed us, thank goodness. 14 people makes for a crowded shelter.

I have to drive from Bethesda, MD, to Easton, PA today. Woke up to snow. Weather.com says "wintry mix changing to rain" by 3pm, but their driving map says snow all the way up to PA.

So now the wife is torn between getting on the road early or waiting until tomorrow when the storm moves north.

    I fucking hate this part.

And we're waiting on upwards of a foot of snow here.

Fingers crossed! I didn't get to do any snowshoeing last winter.
  16. MrPants Hard Cider Gal

The Dallas area got a good amount of snow most of Christmas day. My hour drive home from my parents' house took about 3.

It's snowing pretty good here in NE Ohio right now. First time it snowed like this for about 2 years.

The storm has arrived in Rochester. Hopefully we don't get hit as hard as Buffalo--they are supposed to get nine to seventeen inches.
  19. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

NEPA isn't bad, snowed today which sucked in my car with rear wheel drive but now it's barely rain so it's all going to be slush tomorrow... I hope.

That was a fun 7 hours of driving through icy slush. The drive usually takes 5 hours.

People of Maryland, get the fuck off the road in "wintry mix" weather. You do not know how to drive. Also, please invest in a snowplow or three, because it's much easier to drive on ploughed roads. As soon as we hit the PA border the road was 1000x better even though the weather was worse.

Damnit, it wasn't supposed to snow in PA until AFTER we got there!
  22. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Yeah scratch the "slush" comment about NEPA from before, there's definitely black ice out there.

It's coming down heavy out there now. Not too much snow flying around as I was driving in to work, but enough had fallen that the roads were an absolute mess. Fortunately, they were also virtually empty, so I could drop my speed and turn the winter traction control on without worrying about impatient tailgaters in fancy German autos piling up behind me.

It's stopped snowing here, finally. Now I need to clear the driveway...

Now I've got to drive back to Boston in a snowstorm! Why does it only snow on days I have to travel?

Yeah, we're driving from MA back to Pittsburgh today and not looking forward to all of the snow in eastern PA today.

    Argh.
  29. Inigima Hard Cider Gal

Coming down pretty good here in Baltimore, but not accumulating at present.
  30. Athryn Despondent Fancybear

I *had* snow, but now it's all melted. :(
  31. Ryslin This Is SEWIOUS

It is comfortable here in central florida (more central than Switch's area), I think the air conditioner is on. The ground is saturated though which ment no spraying lawns today. Darnit.

We're in the ferry line now and are therefore more or less committed. All of my local family is totally freaked out, because they don't get much snow out on the Vineyard and are therefore terrified of it.

Cold and rainy here in Austin. Dense fog, too. It's miserable out there but nothing like the thunder/hail storm I experienced in 2009 the very first day I moved here. I remember thinking "hmm, that looks like hail. That looks like nasty weather out there. I'll just open the back door and check real qui OH FUCK FUCK I CAN'T GET THE DOOR CLOSED HAIL HITTING MY FACE OH GOD OH GOD"

I did actually get the door closed when my fiancee ran out of the bedroom screaming that the windows were going to break and helped push it closed. Having never been in a hail storm, (winds clocked in at like 60-80 mph) we were seriously freaked out.

For the past few days, it's been a pleasant -1. Today, when I finally have to start going outside, the predicted temperatures for this week all sit around -20. Thanks, mother nature, love you too!

It's a balmy (compared to Minnesota, anyway) -11 Fahrenheit here, at present.

All of this talk of snow and we're sitting here watching the CFS & SES updates to see if the bushfire that has been burning for the last three days is going to move towards town. It's currently within containment lines, but with tomorrow being 42c (108f) with 30km/h winds that look to be changing towards our direction the day after, that 5km gap could close quickly. We have to head into the city the day after tomorrow so at least we won't be here, but I'd rather not come home to find this has gone...

    yard1.jpg yard2.jpg

I love this place, especially in winter, but the difference in seasons sucks. Down to 0c in winter, then 40+c in summer with potential bushfires.
  39. MrsWidget Keeper of the Elemental Materials

    ouch, good luck Daemion.

It's frosty here in the mornings. FROSTY! Yesterday the frost stayed frosty in the shade until 9:30! Mr. W found a small frozen puddle in our back yard! The week around the New Year is historically the coldest of the year here, with an average low of 37F and an average high of 54F. This year's been a tad below average; it's 27F right now at 6:30AM. #californiaproblems

Time to get rid of some of those bushes.
