Going briefly back to the 'why does Garry talk like that?' theories, I did not jump to the simple and understandable conclusion that Garry might be something other than a cisgendered heterosexual male. I had to, of course, come up with some unnecessarily complicated and tragic background.

My Headcanon theory:

Garry grew up in an abusive home. His mother was kind, gentle, and feminine while his father was extremely masculine, rough, and abusive. His mother was always protecting him but one day Garry accidentally did something that set his father off. His mother took the punishment for him (mirroring the situation where Garry trades his rose for Ib's, including the 'I'll come running if you ever need me' part) and dies. His father is taken to prison.

Garry is sent to live with his grandmother from his mother's side. She's a sad, lonely old woman but she does her best to take care of him. (And she's the one that introduced him to macaroons.) As Garry enters into his teenage years he gets into visual kei music and buys that trench coat.

Unfortunately Grandma dies but, while young, Garry decides to live alone instead of going into foster care. He gets two jobs, one is a part time weekday job at night and the other is a weekend job as part of a tech crew for a theater/band. (Which is why Garry has to leave so quickly at the end of the game, if he doesn't work he could lose his apartment!)

Garry speaks in a feminine manner because in his mind that's the way good and gentle people speak. He doesn't ever want to be like his father so he'll do anything that makes a difference between them such as dying his hair, wearing odd fashionable clothing, and speaking politely.


So, a bit crazy, but thinking up backgrounds is fun.

Hey, did anyone else hear that apparently the creator of Ib is currently doing an update of the game? With new paintings and such. My internet is being very slow right now, so I can't really find the exact source but I read a translation of his blog about the process. I'll look it up again when I'm at home.

I think he started working on it last year, but since Ib got so popular he had lots to do and it got kind of postponed until this year. (There was an Ib contest at Pixiv if I remember correctly? I think the winners ended up being in the calendar that's going for sale? )

I want to say that I'd be really excited to play an updated version, but I had to give up ten minutes into my own playthrough due to being a wuss scared. Hey, it's bad to be playing late at night and have something fall off the desk in real life. . .
So, I'd be really excited to see others play an updated version, then!

Besides that, I have some headcanons I wrote from a few months back I want to share If they are okay. They came out a little story-ish.

I'd like to apologize if it's questionable since I couldn't play it all myself. But with Garry and Mary's similar names, I just had to write it. Some of Guertena's painting we're based off of real people, but they weren't actual people, like "The Lady in Red". Since "Mary" is named "Mary" (right. . . ?), I'd like to believe that it was an actual portrait of someone. And "The Hanged Man" became sacrifice&his desire to save her, personified.

And I saw you guys were discussing Garry's speech mannerisms earlier, but it wasn't really something I considered. So I'm going to handwave some BS now and try to make it fit; Guertena was a stern man, not good at expressing himself outside of his work. "The Hanged Man" . . . can be seen as, "What could I have done to be a better father?" Save her, be there for her. Make his love more apparent, like a doting mother? -- Well, I tried.
In any case, painting!Mary is not like his Mary ("It was all wrong.").
I don't think any of this made much sense.

So excuse me as I crawl away with my crazies now.

I was 99% certain that there would be something in-game that would make my headcanon contradictory, but I was hoping on that 1% it would work out in the end.

Y'know, I can understand rationally why some people love Mary.
Her story makes her sympathetic; the poor girl has suffered a lot in her a life already.

But I can never bring myself to like her.
When I think I'm almost going to be okay with her existence, I remember what she did to Garry in all those endings he dies and I can't bring myself to like her.
It's just.
I can't.

I feel like a horrible human being for hating on a small (make-believe) girl.

Yeeaaaah, I'm with y'all, MariPanda. Sure, she's a cool character, but I could never get over the fact she would willing kill innocent people for her own desires, especially Garry, to the point of actually liking her.

Hey, does anyone here call Ib 'Eve'? I personally don't like using it (I'm just too used to Ib) but I've seen some other people use it.

Since my first language is Spanish, I got used to pronounce it 'Eeb'. Not sure if that's the same as/close to 'Eve'.

I call her 'Ihb', though I don't think that's correct. I think her name in Japanese is more like 'Eeb' which is more like Eve. I didn't know that when I was first playing, so I just call her 'Ihb'.

I've seen people, when categorizing fics and tags and such, use 'Ib(Eve)' or just use 'Eve'. It's kind of irrationally annoying to me, like in a "Your headcanon contradicts my headcanon!!!!" kind of way. I know it's silly, but I wondered how everyone else thought of the subject.

Website says "eeb." I still say "ihb" in my head, though.

Name Conjecture Based on No Real Evidence

Given language issues and whatnot, 'Eve' was likely the intended name with the pronunciation 'eeb(u?)' being as close as the Japanese could get. When translated into English, someone made the decision to translate what was likely イーブ fairly literally which resulted in Ib.
Garry's name is also kind of odd, since I'm used to it being spelled as Gary.

No, it's actually "Ib" on the official website or something, IIRC. But that's what I thought too at first.

Also, from vghime's translation notes:
"I played no part in deciding the English spellings of the three main character names - these were official. They were always in English on the save file portraits, as well as a couple other places."

It's Ib.
Even kouri's blog and his Guertena Shop* use Ib.

*Guertena Shop is kouri's shop. It's actually more like a list with the available merch and links to where you can buy it.
