So how is it pronounced? If I'm being serious I'd guess it starts with (what I'm told is) the sibilant fricative sound "ʒ", like the soft g in "garage".

Oh, I know. I say it tree-tahn-uh. The only thing about that name is sometimes people would verbally shorten to "Trit." Which is just. No.

Jassan, that I thought was a straightforward one. Nope. Jason, jass-AHN, and the way *I* say it, jass-sinn.

EDIT: And Sinnick, we already unraveled the mystery of how to say it earlier in the thread! :P

I don't mind at all, since that's how it's pronounced.

(how else would you say it? It amazed me how often people will invent creative ways to mispronounce a four-letter word without any umlauts or accents.)

In my head I always pronounce it as "noot".

My username's a brand-new creation just for this board. I wanted something unique but also ungoogleable, and since I was studying ancient Egyptian royal titulary at the time I picked "Nebty", which is the name of one of the sets of names given to a Pharaoh. Having a username that was the name of a name was appealingly meta.

Nyyyyute is now how I will pronounce it, even though I would've said "noot" normally. Because it's as goofy to me as saying pyuma.
Soli-chan, Nebty and wisbechlad like this.
  17. wisbechlad Hard Cider Gal

Oddly enough, the local dialect in Wisbech pronounces 'new' the American way, not standard English (i.e. noo, not nyoo) Some say that as the pilgrims came from East Anglia, they took the non-standard pronunciation with them.

    It's 'wizbeach', not 'wizbeck'

My wife loves to make fun of the Minnesotan way I sometimes say root, roof, or creek. But even I wouldn't say "noot" for Nute.

Putting a y sound after the vowel is rank heresy.

FerdieLance was my character in an Ace Attorney RP, a lawyer with a snake motif. I think AA names are pretty much required to be puns. It eventually became my default handle, replacing my earlier Gilbert and Sullivan-derived name (JohnWWells, which was too commonly used.)

Anyone who thinks that the source of their name was dorky can be comforted that at least they didn't get it from lawyer roleplaying.

Funny digression to explain why I hate X-Pac so much.

Back in 2001, Matt Bowyer introduced me to the world of wrasslin' video games with Smackdown 2 for the Playstation. As you do in these games, I created myself as a wrestler and had my first ever match against X-Pac.

I spent about twenty minutes being unable to reverse a goddamn headlock. I think I set new records for amounts of swearing at a video game.

When I found out that X-Pac was going to be an unlockable character in WWE '13, I was overjoyed. It's practically therapy now to throw the game in after work and beat the shit out of him (virtually) with a steel chair.

I was informed by my Irish acquaintances while living there that it's actually spelled "póg mo thóin". Still pronounced roughly the same, though.

I'm a little weird about these things, though. I've memorised how to spell "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" without looking it up, and was even taught how to pronounce it correctly by a Welshman.
