If that's the case, then the State law, even if passed into law, would probably get struck down, right? Because Federal law trumps State law.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to add that someone wants to make being a single parent a contributing factor to child abuse. Because them filthy sluts are lying about their unplanned pregnancies because social services told them to, and even if your man is abusing you, you should stay because dads are disciplinarians. Especially the abusive kind, I guess.

It isn't a real bill, it's just a BS bill they want to use as part of an election platform. It's not intended to pass, it's just to show how hard on marriage or abortions or whatever they are. Pure electioneering bullshit.

edit: Angie if Dorf Fortress taught us anything it is that abusive vomit covered parents are the best.

I don't understand the politics of this. Do they think women just don't vote?
  7. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

They think (correctly, if history is any indicator) that women don't consistently vote in their own interest on womens' rights issues. There are a surprising number of Phyllis Schlaflys out there.

Depends on how old she is, because I discovered whitehouse.com pretty early in life.

And was horrified, but I mean when you're that young finding people covering other people in fluid and oh god the horror, the horror.

To be fair, men don't vote in their own interests either.

I mean, look at all the poor, white, jobless, angry men who despise "socialism" - the very thing that will uplift them out of their poor, jobless, and possibly even angry state.

  11. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

Yeah. Well, lots of people don't, and sometimes that's good and sometimes it's bad, and the case for minority rights almost always involves people voting against their own interests to make it happen (putting aside for the moment the degree to which having a society that doesn't treat x minority group horribly is in everyone's interest, because it's unquantifiable and most voters would not cast such a question in that light anyway). Women's rights is a unique issue because it's the only case of a class of people being abused by the system that that class has the numbers to fix on their own, if they all wanted to.

I disagree. America's lower and middle classes are being taken for a ride and they're still arguing about whether or not Obama is a Muslim.
  13. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

Sorry, I guess I wasn't really thinking of socioeconomic classes so much as biological groups. Although I'd except that case on other grounds too: while the non-rich in the US are sure getting a raw deal now and forever, it's not really the black-and-white issue with clearly needed solutions that the misogynist/racist/homophobic elements of our politics are. "Don't pass laws that allow the state to examine me with a dildo before I can have surgery, please" is a lot simpler to grasp than the kinds of systemic economic problems that face the middle and lower classes.

Also I believe it is spelled "Muslin."
  14. Jibble Armchair Designer

In addition to people voting against their own interest, for the Republicans it doesn't really matter if the issue is a winner or a loser. Sure, some of them will just spew the talking points to get some votes, but a lot of them are true believers. Deep in their core they believe it's their solemn duty to save the unwashed, huddled, free-humping masses and lead America to the promised land of Christian perfection. The opinion of the masses are irrelevant to their God-guided quest.

Santorum had the distinct edge among women in Alabama and Mississippi last night, so there's that.

This whole bizarre attack on birth control (happening in NH as well, not worth linking) doesn't even correlate with the way employer-based health insurance works. The employer pays part of the premium, which is unlikely to go down if birth control pills are excluded. The employer isn't being forced to provide birth control against his will -- the insurance company provides it and pays for it. All the employer pays for is health insurance and frankly, it's none of his business what his employees use it for.

But I saw a poll yesterday that had 51% in favor of the good Christian position on this, because freedom. *sigh*

It's not bizarre, except to the extent that their beliefs are bizarre. They don't want people using birth control. They think it's an affront to God. It is acceptable to lie out their asses about how coverage works if it helps them achieve their goal of stopping all the slutty sluts from ruining everything.

Oh, I understand the Great Slut Menace, but one would think there would be more pressing concerns at this point in time, such as jobs and wars and things and the Great Gay Destroyers of Marriage Menace. Not to mention that the wives of all these anti-birth control legislators are probably slutty sluts who use birth control.

    So I'm sticking with bizarre.
  18. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

How could things like jobs and wars be more important than God's Will? You're right about the gays, but through the power of prayer, they are able to focus on both of these important issues.

The economy is (slowly) getting better. The Dow has long since recovered from both the economic collapse and the brinkmanship over the debt ceiling. The full breadth of the Republican argument for this election was to be, "Look at the economy! Obama hasn't fixed it!"

We're just now getting out of Iraq, and people still have a bad taste in their mouth over that fiasco, so they're going to have a tough time running on a "Hey, remember how awesome war is?!" platform. They're trying REALLY HARD to explain to all of us why we should be nuking the shit out of Iran right now, but their credibility isn't exactly high on that issue.

Without that, all that's left is culture war issues. They don't have anything else to offer.

Yeah, there seems to be some kind of slippage going on between the idea that one is free to choose and practice one's own religion, (ie, freedom of religion) and having the freedom to enforce the values and behaviours required by one's own religion on people who are not members of it. That these two "freedoms" are totally unlike (and indeed contradict each other) should be painfully obvious to any life form more advanced than a coelacanth, but, apparently it's not clear to some who respond to perceived inadequacies in the extent of the 2nd freedom as if it were the total loss of the 1st kind...

Yeah, by the precedent they are trying to set, employers should also have control over how employees spend their wages. Otherwise, how could they be sure that their money isn't subsidizing sin?

    YAY, FREEDOM!

Part of what I don't understand is the tactics on this one. I think it is idiotic to be against contraceptives, I will state that up front, but why are they trying to pass a law that would be unenforceable under current federal law. It makes no sense. They could do something completely legal, which would just to not have their insurance cover contraceptives. It would accomplish the same idiotic goal, but would be legal. Again, I am not trying to say that is what I think they should do, just what would be legal for them to do.
  26. jerri blank Despondent Fancybear

What I've found in dealing with legislators and city councils who pass discriminatory laws is that they don't care whether it will ultimately be struck down. They score the political points up front, and legislative immunity by and large keeps them from suffering the consequences of their actions later. If their dumbass law gets struck down, they can go back to their districts and say, "Hey, I did the right thing, but that meddlin' federal judge came in and interfered with it."

I don't know, people find us sluts very menacing. Your son or daughter could be vulnerable to my slutty ways! THINK OF THE ADULT CHILDREN THAT I AM TRYING TO SLEEP WITH!

Of course actual sluttty sluts know to wrap it up and use the pill because dear fuck babies are the devilspawn and you do not want them to come out by accident. Also STDs. It's usually the vulnerable virgins who don't demand the pill and condom because, of course, everyone knows sex with a virgin cures STDs and cannot cause pregnancy and of course everyone tells the truth about their sexual history, health, etc. To the person they just met. And are trying to sleep with.

So unsafe sex is totally safe so long as you're like super sure your partner has been chaste and whatnot. Not that unprotected anal is all the rage among Baptist Chastity Pledgers because butt virginity doesn't count or anything.

One, the non-white lower and middle classes don't think he's a Muslim. Two, belief in things like "Obama is a muslim" is actually more common with well-educated conservatives. No, really. Try here.

The Only Moral Abortion is My Abortion grants an interesting glimpse into the sorts of people who consistently vote against their own rights. It's very much a matter of "This is awful and wrong, but I'm the exception if I need it myself."

The DOW is a terrible indicator of how the economy is doing in regard to ~70% of the American people. One in four working class pleople are unemployed or under employed. Things are still really shitty for most of the people who do the building, sweating and bleeding for this nation.

Interesting article. Amazing the kind of mental barriers people are able to set up that allows them to judge every other client in a clinic as being a "bad woman" (based on no information other than the fact that they're there) and then say "but in my case the condom broke so it's legit for me to be here". At some point you'd think the bad faith would break under the strain. Apparently not.
  36. D-0ne Herpus Derpus

Even when abortions are medically necessary there are very few places a woman can go to get a pregnancy terminated these days. Most hospitals won't do abortions post four months and sadly many women who want a baby don't discover real issues with the pregnancy until after the 3rd month or 4th month depending on when they get their first or second ultrasound if they get one at all. Wht's far worse for women these days is the woman who wants a baby, doesn't worry about getting an abortion within the first three months and she then discovers that she actually needs an abortion for medical reasons post the third month. She's in a world of shit.

I know without any doubt whatsoever that a woman had a medically necessary abortion and a few days later, some loon sent her a chapter out of the Bible in the U.S. mail. This woman wanted her baby and the baby wasn't going to live and if the baby died within her she could have died as well. She had to have an abortion... She still had to go to an abortion clinic, wade through the loons and afterwards, while she and her husband were still in grieving over their lost pregnancy, some fucking loon made sure she and he knew that "they" knew where she lived and that she'd had an abortion.

    This country is fucked up.
