Justified. Turns out it is kinda modern day Deadwood, but better.

Link to the nerdcast, it's pretty entertaining so far. Whoa, he did stand-up comedy? That just seems so weird, might have to dig and see if any videos exist. Also, his Californian accent was a bit of a shock at first, as I've mostly seen him in Justified with that slight drawl.

Olyphant was on Conan the other night, which I do not watch, but the wife does and he was perfectly charming.

This may be heretical, but, is it just me or does Goggins seem to be pushing a bit this season? The preacher is a tad weak, but the sister is good.

So they threw the other deputies a bone and we got to see the tiniest bit of character development for one. The season needs to be more episodes. There are good actors and good characters that need to be more fully developed. They are trying by feeding us bits here and there, but they have to cram it all into a limited number of episodes. Last night, the scene in the bar would have been great if fleshed out a bit more, but it seemed a bit too tacked on. LIke, "We know she is good and we want more of her, but this is all the time we can give her for now. Back to Raylan". Granted, if it was 98% Raylan I would still be happy with the show.

I've actually felt that way about Goggins since almost the beginning. I think I'm having a hard time with his not-very-good Southern accent.
  6. Quackers Magister Mundi Elyscape

Really? He was born in Alabama and was raised in Georgia. It sounds good to my northern ears!

Yeah, far be it from me - as a lifelong Yankee - to question a Real Southerner, but with a name like Walton Goggins I just assumed he was the genuine article.

My god, there's REALLY no excuse, then. Or maybe he overdoes it. As a lifelong Southerner myself, I have never heard anyone down here pronounce "your" as "yore" or add "a'" to the beginning of a word, like "a-prayin." It's like he learned how to speak Southern by reading Li'l Abner comics.

I've only just watched the first season, but to some extent I felt like his drawl was deliberately over-accentuated (by Boyd, not by Walton) as a way of taunting Raylan. Obviously you guys have seen a lot more than I have - and even by the end of the first season his relationship with Raylan has sort of changed so that idea doesn't hold much water - but I didn't attribute the hokey slang to bad acting specifically.

And holy shit, I just finished the final episode of S1. Goddamn!

As another Yank, I find Boyd's accent completely convincing, but what do I know? ;)

You've lived in the wrong parts of the south, Jerri. There are people with that accent - mostly in the ruralest areas. My mother (Deep Gap, North Carolina) can get pretty damn incomprehensible if she puts her mind to it or spends too much time around her kin. The problem with Boyd's dialogue isn't his accent - it's that nobody with that accent would use those words. It's a variation of the Mamet problem from The Unit (wherein, if you did not see this series, President Palmer and his merry band of Navy Seals honked and squeaked very nearly in blank verse, despite the fact that they were, to a man, not supposed to be pretentious Ivy League educated assholes), but I forgive it in this case because he sells it so good.

The main mystery could use some gas now, though. My personal stiffy is starting to get a little flaccid. Gimme something to perk me back up, Justified.

Or perhaps the right parts. I'm guessing Jerri comes into contact with a lot of people from different backgrounds due to her work, though.

And I like that Boyd has a hillbilly drawl without the stereotypically limited vocabulary and mental capacity to go with it. I assume that was intentional.

So, interestingly I was on vacation over the holidays for a month, and on the island us (it's a small resort island with only a few couples at a time) was a former writer/producer from season 2 of the show. They were responsible for the Mags Bennett storyline which they based off a real person down there during their research. Needless to say I gushed about the plot and writing.

One thing they pointed out is that Tim is the one cast member who doesn't prepare well, and thought it was interesting that I knew the rumors of how he is on-set with the attitude and all.

Huh. I didn't expect the preacher thing to end quite that abruptly.

I am starting to wonder how the Boyd and Raylan stories will intersect this year, though. They seem pretty far apart right now.

I wouldn't write that off just yet. I'm expecting Ellen May to have been grabbed by the preacher's sister because vengeance.

Loved the moments of people doing exactly what they said they'd do in this episode. <3 Rachel being Rachel.

Kinda curious as to how Ellie May knew she was about to get got, unless someone stepped in to help her.

If she's out there on her own, though, maybe she goes to Raylan?

Ohh, good call. The meeting with the Sheriff, seeing Ellie May join the church and confess a bunch of stuff to her brother... she may have connected the dots.

There's no way Ellie May was smart enough to see that coming. I love her, but she's so damn dumb. I'm thinking Johnny got her to bring to Duffy. He'd have known they were sending her away and be able to set up a grab.
  28. Mister Widget I Pretty Much Live Here

Yeah, Johnny for a double cross, or Sheriff Shelby in an attack of conscience. Or she just went to get a soda and got lost.

Okay. How big, precisely, is Harlan County? Because it's got a Holler, enough territory and population for Boyd to make a living, and now a sparsely populated hill country. And wherever the hell the Bennetts lived.

On the plus side, Jim Beaver is basically going full Bobby now. That's alright by me. Now he needs to call somebody an idgit.

On the other hand, I have a hard time taking Major Dad seriously as a criminal. It's not his fault. It's just....he's Major Dad.
