Justified. Turns out it is kinda modern day Deadwood, but better.

I didn't like it. When Duffy did something like that it seemed very appropriate. This time felt forced. Duffy is supposed to be the cold-hearted killer that makes those kinds of moves. To have some other shlub do it doesn't have the same impact, especially considering the more friendly tone of the conversation. It was kinda dumb, really.

Isn't that the second time someone's blown someone away right next to Duffy? It's like a running gag.

Showing the Chicago guy is so connected that he can blow away his friend-for-life FBI contact without batting an eyelash was fantastic, and definitely a "you couldn't have seen that coming" moment.
  3. Quackers Magister Mundi Elyscape

I liked it because Duffy is a badass, but he's also this comic figure that gets stuck in all kinds of shitty situations. He's not quite the Big Bad because he's still answering to all these crazy fucking heads of criminal enterprises and just can't seem to catch a break.

But I didn't think that scene was at all surprising. As soon as the Dad from Glee showed up, I figured glasses guy was dead. Which is a shame. I love me some Sneakers actors showing up in things.

Is it? Duffy cold-kills the one drug dealer, am I missing a previous occurrence?

Was from a previous season. I could've swore Duffy's had someone sitting next to him get blown away, much to his surprise. My memory is faulty though.

Finished Season 1 of this and working on Season 2. I'm enjoying Justified more than any show I've watched in a long while. I work in a county courthouse, and just once I'd like to pass Raylan Givens in the hallway. :)

Was I the only one who thought it might have been Patton Oswalt's character who picked up Ellie Mae? They were careful not to show much of the car in the security footage. Maybe it WAS just me, 'cause I forgot PO's constable drives a brown Pacer.
  12. jerri blank Despondent Fancybear

Help me out, 'cause I might be just slow: How did Raylan and the sheriff go from arresting Boyd to visiting the house where the lawyer and her thugs were holding Josiah? There was no explanation as far as I can tell as to why they went there. Did Raylan decide that the attorney was after Drew Thompson because she was slow-walking Arlo's deal and then figure her guys had snatched Josiah, thinking he was Thompson?

I think they followed her back there.

I think Raylan said something about her not getting back to them on the deal for Arlo and that caused him to question her motives. (IIRC, that was because Boyd paid her to slow the deal down so they could find Drew.)
  16. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Yeah but that doesn't make much sense either. She walks into the scene and has time to be there arguing for like a good 5 minutes before Raylan and the sheriff roll up.
  17. jerri blank Despondent Fancybear

If the writers had simply had Raylan say to Shelby, immediately after the lawyer takes Boyd away, "There's something goin' on here - she's holding up Arlo's deal for a reason. Let's follow her," that whole part of the ep would have made a lot more sense. Instead we're just left to guess.

I see gaps like this from time to time, and I always assume it's because I'm not paying close enough attention. But more and more I think the writing just leaves a little too much to guesswork.

EDIT: If there was an explanatory line in there, it may have gotten trimmed for time; apparently they were struggling to get that whole scene short enough.
  18. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

They could have cut out the useless crap about sidekick dude's rehab friend's drug dealer.

Yeah, but obviously that's going to lead to something. The two story lines have Colton in common.

There's also the context of what happened with Boyd. Raylan goes to the hill people to find Drew and Boyd is there looking for Drew as well. Then, Boyd's attorney just so happens to be Arlo's attorney? It's a small town but I can see a plausible argument for why that might raise suspicion in Raylan as to what the deal is with this attorney.

I think they were following the van. Underage girl mentioned the crazy painted panel van. If you notice there's a very quick shot of a psychedelic panel van in the opening of the garage sequence. Once Josiah starts screaming Raylan and Shelby have cause to come running in.

It's always entertaining when another shooting's justified, not least because you just know it's going to add more fuel to Art's supervisory fires.

I just love that they have him shoot people instead of talking. In any other television show, there would have been a long drawn out talk in that bar instead of someone being shot mid-word.

Eh, seems like the season keeps piling on more zany, ala S03, without it working for me as well. Aside from following up what we presumed to be an ongoing arc ("Raylan moonlights and probably gets in trouble for it") most of the episode's developments seemed to both come out of and lead back into left field. The Non-Harlan Kentucky Shadow Council was in a sense unsurprising but totally unappealing for me as a plot direction.

And, I dunno, pouring more created-the-situation justified shootings on Art might be consistent with past events in the show but it sort of seems like piling up a pointless fire when Raylan's professional problems might have arisen from the various other dubious things he's already done lately.

Finally caught up with this show. I watched S1 and loved it, then didn't watch any more until a week or two ago, when I went through, um, all of it.

I enjoy Duffy quite a bit; in my head he's still the character from Burn Notice. I love his delivery.

I just started Season 3 the other day, and I have to say that one of my favorite things about this show is seeing the actors they cast as guest stars. Off the top of my head, Neal McDonaugh and Frank John Hughes (who both starred in Band of Brothers) already this season, Brandon Keener (aka the voice of Garrus Vakarian) and Alan Ruck (who played Carmeron in Ferris Bueller's Day Off) in the same episode in Season 2. It's cool seeing so many familiar faces show up, even if it's just for one episode.

He's referencing Alfred Kinsey. Brian is expressing frustration at just how much he's attracted to Timothy Olyphant. I mean, I assume it's Timothy Olyphant. Maybe it's Jere Burns? Or Jim Beaver? ...Nick Searcy?

He was really good in that bizarre Hermain Cain video, for sure.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to track down the song playing in the background in a scene about 22 minutes in, where Boyd is chewing Colt out in the back room of the bar and Ava pulls Boyd out to meet with Winn. I was so distracted by the music I missed their conversation. Anyone know the song?

Shazam, weirdly, could tell it was a Justified episode but listed a bunch of songs that weren't the one I was interested in.

EDIT: According the the official Justified/FX site, the song was called "No Big Deal," by a band called Bar 61. It's not on the one album that band has on Itunes. If you happen to find that song and tell me where to get it, I will give you ALL THE FEELS.

Alright so, my problem with the episode is wondering how Boyd got all of this shit into motion while counting on Raylan to show up at his bar to make sure he didn't get killed by the same guy he gave false names to. It only worked out because Boyd didn't himself get killed. Am I missing something, or is that just deus ex machina.
