Key and Peele

Key and Peele is one of my favorite new shows. It has the Chappelle Show format - on-stage banter interspersed with filmed sketches - but is WAY funnier and smarter, IMHO. Key and Peele have great chemistry together. They are my new TV boyfriends.

Most of their stuff takes on race issues, but there's definitely a nerd flavor to a lot of the stuff they do. They even do gay stuff well; a recent episode had them as a gay couple celebrating the legalization of gay marriage in a street rally, and one of them was clearly more excited about getting married than the other.

Okay, there was a little stereotyping going on there, but nothing TOO horrifying.

This is one of my few must-watch shows this season.

Those jerks need to make the Reggie Watts track they use for their theme song available online. Like, now.

I'm really quite enthusiastic about this show. Some of the bits feel like they go on maybe a little long, but enough of it is out of the park that everybody really ought to watch this. The little Obama rap battle bit - that was excellent. Or:

"When I squeeze his lungs and he begs me for life, that is when his heart will open and he will receive the Lord."

LIVE, DAMN YOU! LIVE! I'M NOT LOSING ANOTHER THREAD!

    Renewed for a third season.

I'll admit that the second run didn't blow me away quite as much as the first but it's still probably the best sketch show on television, unless that T.J. Miller thing doesn't suck (I have forgotten to put it into my DVR for so long, I just gave up).

Edit: Jesus, this still gets me every time.

Are there even any other contenders? Also, this one makes me laugh and laugh every time I so much as think about it:

Yes, it does go overboard towards the end, but there are still like a dozen huge laughs in that one.

The East/West bowl is probably their best sketch but everything they do is pretty damn funny.

Holy cow, I'd never seen the East/West bowl thing. My favorite is still this one, since I swear this exact couple walks in front of my apartment every weekend.

My girlfriend and I just began watching this, and now we're in the middle of season 2. We're TOTALLY loving it, especially Obama and Luther. We also loved that East/West football thing too. So freaking funny. Reminds me of Mr. Show in a good way,

Love it - didn't think sketch shows were a US thing, something I always associate with UK humour.

Aw - apparently the Nov. 28 episode was the last of the season.

They usually aren't that big apart from Saturday Night Live, but they come along now and again and there are a handful of really great ones.

So I started watching some of their bits online 'cause of you guys, holy shit, swear to god I only barely managed to not pee myself. Funniest stuff I've seen in ages -- how the hell do they have so damn many great bits without any duds?

Not U.S. broadcast, but cable is taking a swing at it. I don't know whether Funny or Die will be back on whatever channel it was on last, but Portlandia is on IFC and a few comedians have shows coming up on Comedy Central (Nick Kroll and Ben Hoffman both mention sketch in their pitch, and I strongly suspect that Amy Schumer's show will end up that way or it'll go off the air posthaste because creator-oriented fictional series don't seem to last long on that channel, and there's two more from Anthony Jeselnik and Nathan Fielder that I can't find loglines for with remedial googling). On top of that, you could argue that Louie is at least in the family (it's weird - it has some continuity, but not much, and it's always him as him, but at this point he's at least had F. Murray Abraham in two different roles) and Adult Swim has Loiter Squad and it's still running Tim and Eric. I won't be surprised if something ends up in the weird Adult Swim style thing that Fox is doing on Saturdays at some point in the future as well.
