We're considering getting my mother a Kindle Fire for Christmas, the one that's wi-fi only. Trouble is that they use a Verizon 4g (or 3g - can't remember) device for their 'net access, and it has kind of a small data allowance.

Are Kindle books pretty skimpy, data-wise? Is this a good gadget for someone who doesn't have an always-on 'net connection with (theoretically) unlimited data?

Oh, and you can enjoy books you've purchased without being connected to the 'net, correct? My mom does much of her reading in deer stands. I am not making this up.

Books are measured in single digit megabytes, and yes, you can read them while wifi is inaccessible.

And battery life goes WAY up if you turn wifi off, but it goes WAY down if you have wifi on but no wifi available (because then it's always scanning for wifi.)

If you're just going to use if for books, why not a Paperwhite?

I'm comparing Kindle Fires myself (on a whim I'm gonna add one to my Xmas list) and I was just skimming these posts when I thought I saw "Mom" and "deer stands" in the same sentence. I was not disappointed. <3

By way of update, we found a Nook Tablet for $99 at Wal Mart. It's not their best and fanciest, but it'll meet her needs just fine.

We considered that, but I think she'd also get a kick out of the games. She loves playing with my Ipad every time I'm down there.
