It's a ranking system, not an MMO level grind. If you couldn't go down it would be a waste of everyone's time.

That may be so, but starting you out at 0 points in the new division, thus incurring a division drop (and thus a 50 point drop into the lower division) because you lost 1 game out of 3 is pretty harsh. Especially considering that it takes a best of 3 series to get promoted. I guess I understand the lack of division protection, but I'd have rather not started at 0 points in the division if single loss right out of the gates essentially costs me 50 points (and a best of 3) and a division.

They had us at a 51% victory rate based on ELO right? Pretty crappy odds right out of the gate in the new season.

I love playing support mostly because it's the first role I learned and I'm not too good at the other ones atm.

Not too thrilled with the new patches from a support perspective. Boosting the prices on Sightstone and Crystalline Flask hurt a bit.

The entire system is just an obfustucation layer over ELO. You can ignore all the crap and continue to play with the same skill level of people you did before, only now it's in a system where everyone can think they're improving.

Well my first ranked game of season three we had a duo bot that didn't communicate with the team after champ select and a mid that went AFK for ten minutes, so I'm going to say nothing has really changed.

  6. So this was pretty funny, after my last game I noticed one of the players on the other team was malphigian. What are the odds of that? He won because his team had two OPs (Kayle, Xin) and we only had one (Vi). I don't think anyone told them you're only supposed to take one OP.

Edit: also malph must be pretty bad at LoL if he's getting matched against me, lol.

Thresh is interesting, in that he's a support that works as a viable ADC or top. Just played a game where I had my shackle up to over 700 if I let if fully charge. 14/6/12 by the end of the game I was melting them like a kog or vayne.
  8. malphigian Oh, Come On

Haha, I am pretty bad! My ranked is currently Bronze II, so I've got the medal to prove just how bad. I'm still kind of learning lulu, but every team fight I was just waiting for kayle or xin to hit the middle of the group and made them HUGE and it all seemed to work out pretty well.

Step one: Find someone (or several someones) who will play the game with you. Ideally you'll all have voice comms.
    Step two: Play with them

That's really all there is to it. I mean, ideally you'd play with McKnight, or maybe Therlun if you want Dominion (and can handle deadpan snark from a cruel Hun), since they're stupidly knowledgeable . I don't really play much these days, but poke me (mxlm) on steam if you like.

On an unrelated note, I think I'm going to bookmark one of chequers old posts and like/unlike it every time I visit this forum. That generates alerts, right?

You're all cruel. Also I'm playing this on and off again, same name as here.

It's an awful game that way. Start back on it once, and I find it's months before I can safely put it down again.

I'm NatusM there. I'm OK at everything except assassins and melee, thank god.

Paging Soli-chan and anyone else who is just learning LoL, because that's where I'm at - haven't even played a real match yet, just a few games against bots. I only have Garen, Ashe, Master Yi, and Alistair (?) unlocked (Alistair was free for subscribing to Riot Games on YouTube). My account / summoner name is SuperJay42, if anyone wants to do some co-op games against bots to learn the fundamentals, hit me up. Or we could jump in a real game and get slaughtered and screamed at by our teammates, if you're into that sort of thing.

Cool, thanks. I'll check those out later. The LoL official site and forums have a lot of good resources for new players, but you really gotta start with the glossary / translation guide just to develop a basic understanding of the Leaguish language.

But uh, so! My installation's being a right idiot and won't let me play so I'm having trouble with that aspect.
I did get through the tutorial though! Re-installing for the fourth time, but definitely gonna have a look with that.

chequers: Fuck you, I was super happy when I logged in and had scads of Likes.

Soli-chan and SuperJay: Definitely get someone to teach you, preferably someone reputable. McKnight is ideal if he's sober; he's also on Euro-time, though, and I don't know if that's convenient for either of you. Also, he has to be sober, and is McKnight. (Love ya McKnight!) Other good options include Therlun*, mx, ThornFalconeye, maybe espressojim if he's up for it, probably some more of Euro crew I don't know. I would be happy to teach you the rudiments in a bot game, but I am a grouch and should not under any circumstances be involved in a real game with new players. (My name changes on Steam, but I'm always the guy with this avatar and I'm in a jillion QT3/BF groups.)

    * Therlun is a very good player and a very good teacher, but if (when) you fuck up you have to hear his tone of voice. He isn't angry, Therlun doesn't get angry. He's just disappointed, and that's worse.

    Do:
    - Try all the free champions each week so you can learn what they do.
    - Read a good newbie guide. A good newbie guide.
    - Install Mumble and get a mic if you don't have them already. Voice chat is essential. If you're SHY~ you can just listen if you want -- much better if you talk, but at least being able to hear verbal cues is very helpful. As is dropping F-bombs at mx. Take it from me, I played all of Saints Row 3 in co-op with him.
    - Ask questions here.
    - Get your feet wet in bot games. Pick Easy to start out. 5v5 only, 3s is very different.
    - Report the absence of enemies from your lane ("bot mia" or "miss" or "ss" -- MIA is the common LoL usage; ss is Dota/HoN parlance that means the same thing), and ping if you want to show something like a suspected enemy path etc.
    - Start out with recommended items. This game is very situational, but when you're first starting and you don't know what anything does, you can usually do worse than the game's suggestions.

    Don't:
    - Believe everything you read on the official forums or that people in games tell you. Sometimes there is good advice there, but there are also a lot of very dumb people who mistakenly believe that they are not very dumb. See also: the oft-cited Dunning-Kruger effect.
    - Spend too much time playing just bot games, especially on easy, unless you don't ever intend to play real games. Bot AI is very predictable and can teach you bad habits.
    - Blame anyone else for your deaths. This is important. I know it sounds harsh. Yes, someone should be calling MIAs, but you should be watching your minimap constantly and when someone is missing, you should know already. Sometimes your death really is someone else's fault -- they don't use an ability they should be, or Tristana is stacking gold-per-5 items, or whatever -- but if you get in the habit of taking responsibility for yourself you'll be both happier and a better player.
    - Play too much. This entire genre can be stressful and rage-inducing, because it is a team game where one person can screw their whole team. It is not good to be on a six hour long emotional roller coaster. I used to quit if we won because I was happier ending on a high note.
    - Play with people you don't like or don't mesh well with just because you know them or even because you like them. I like Lazy just fine but if I never see another goddamned Ring of Health start in Dota it will be too soon.
    - Play with just other newbies, if you can avoid it. It sounds like a good idea but when no one has any clue what they're doing you don't learn very much.

I'd happily help anyone learn the game with maybe 3 caveats.

    1) I'd like you to get to lvl 10 yourself before you hit me up for advice. Learn the basic controls and have fun, then come talk to me.

    2) I'm EU but keep very weird hours so don't be afraid to message me on Steam whenever *except* evenings my time because 9 times out of 10 I'll be busy playing with my regular group of friends on the EUW server and I usually don't drop those games for anything.

    3) I need to be sober (or at least relatively so). Everyone loved drunk McKnight up till the point they played with *very* drunk McKnight :)

Also any questions you guys have feel free to post them in this thread, most of us are more then happy to answer things as soon as we see them. And nothing is too stupid after dealing with Lazy for years, so don't even worry about that. It's nice to see a bit of activity in the thread again.

If a few more people in solo queue made use of forums like this for their newbie questions, I'd have a little more hair on my head. Seriously, fire away. There is no question too basic, no uncertainty we can't shed some light on. What some uncouth internet barbarian may think of as "dumb", I simply view as an opportunity for learning.

I sent a friend request. I play bot games just to relax when I feel like clicking on stuff but don't know what other game to play.

ARAM's are a good way to learn what champions do and how to not get confused when you're in a teamfight situation, the kind of poking and back-and-forth that goes on.

Feel free to send a message if you see me on and got any questions about the champ you're playing or whatever.

Therlun is definately the best teacher. Don't play with McKnight unless you actually enjoy listening to a drunken Irishman scream that you and everyone else is a "STUPID CUNT!" or "FUCKING IDIOT!"

As Pogo points out ARAMs are a great way to learn champions and what items do. They also don't last nearly as long so you can keep trying new things more often.

I just started playing again if anyone wants a partner for Bot/ARAM games. I've played since beta, but it's been at least a solid year where I didn't play competitively, so I'm not going to be touching PVP for a while. Summoner name: Soreum.

Is there a reason you're quoting another ironic statement by McKnight followed by a factually correct statement followed by angry chequers?
  30. Do it the thorn way and get gold ranked with movespeed builds on every character with a stun or skillshot!

But we should do some friendly ARAMS- too long has it been since I have played a game with a bunch of people, socially inept as I am.

We both have each other on Ignore, so the only people making a big deal out of my statement is you? And having played with Lazy you also realize my comment has absolutely nothing to do with him personally, simply that the baseline for stupid playing decisions and questions has been set very low over the years. In fact you made a similar comment in your own post.

Mx tried to make a funny, your post was incredibly unnecessary while also late to the party. Get over yourself.
  33. Inigima Hard Cider Gal

The rest of us, who -- to our apparent detriment -- have neither of you on ignore, have now had four comments on the subject between you two on this page, including one directly following mx's attempt to defuse it with humor. But sure, be a dick. Either way I'm dropping this now.
  34. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

I'm rewarding mx a like for digging through 34 pages of thread to find that shit.

Anyone else finding the new Shop interface kind of a pain in the ass? I mean, it's partly because I'm not used to it, maybe, but all those categories are annoying and it also seems to cover more space, which sorta means that I'm not buying my stuff while walking out of the fountain like I used to before.
ehm ecks, AaronSofaer and Soli-chan like this.
  35. Inigima Hard Cider Gal

A bit, but I think it's worth it to be able to filter items based on multiple categories.

The main problem still being that you can't customize the recommended loadouts for everyone, I think. It would fix a lot of problems.
  37. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

I think it's great for the learning process for someone like me who just loaded the game up out of the blue and there are a dozen new items and champions, but once I know what I want it feels like it takes longer to get to it.

Of course, all of that is nil if you have it setup by the time you're done porting.

And what the hell happened to CLG? Nobody from CLG seems to be streaming.

  38. Therlun I Pretty Much Live Here

There are two small, rectangular buttons on the top of the shop. One switches to a version with just the pictures instead of using all the real estate for text. That really helps (tooltips still work).

Also, it's funny to see how LoL makes people rage even when they are not actually playing the game. :P
    JoshV and Soli-chan like this.
  39. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Yeah the grid selection helped after I found that, it's the clicking on categories part that's a bit finicky.

It seems like CLG and TSM are streaming less and scrimming more in private. I am very amused to see Curse playing so strongly this season especially because 3 of their starters are former CLG.
