Seiji: "Everyone played it when I was young. At family gatherings and such..."

Tamao's eyes narrow almost imperceptibly when we turn admiringly to Piano-sempai. It really doesn't take much, huh?!


Tamao: "...All my family ever played was cards."
Seiji: "This guy picks things up quickly, but his sense is a little lacking."
Tamao: "We won't know until I try."


P-chan: "More importantly, won't you get told off by the teachers for this..."
Seiji: "The rain will wash it away sooner or later. Do you play?"
P-chan: "Chess? Um..."
Seiji: "You don't know the rules either? Then start memorising them now. I'll teach you."



Tamao peers at Seiji wordlessly.


Seiji: "...What?"
Tamao: "It just felt like you were so hugely reluctant to teach me when I first asked."
P-chan: "...Is that so?"
Seiji: "...That's because teaching two people's no different from teaching one."
Tamao: "Hnnnn."


Seiji: "If there's something you'd like to say, just say it, loud and clear."
Tamao: "Not really?"

I was under the impression that everyone was a chess master too, but lately I've learnt that many people I know actually don't play.

I learned how to play chess when I was really young, but by the time I was 14 I had to teach the kids I babysat how to play. Suddenly, it was like no one learned how anymore. Which was pretty sad because I LOVE chess!

All my knowledge about chess comes from The Luzhin Defense. :D

To be honest, I know how to play chess because I thought "smart people play chess" (and that was before I had heard of TVTropes.).
So I know how to play chess as in, I know how all the pieces move, but I do not know how to win a game.

LEGO chess. I'm not sure I've ever even seen a real chessboard, but I played the hell out of LEGO Chess.

I vaguely know how to play chess, but I don't know how to play it well/the best opening moves etc. Kind of like how I know how to play fighting games, but I don't know how to play them strategically.

I think chess is considered a more Western and exotic thing over in Japan though. So this scene kind of emphasizes the class difference between Tamao and Seiji, since Tamao's more of a down-to-earth middle-class typical-Japanese-household kid while Seiji was raised in a mansion and doesn't even know what street food is.

My brother taught me to play when I was like six. Then he would proceed to kick my ass with advanced moves that he "forgot" to teach me.

My brother taught me too. We were playing all the time, either Dragon Ball Z (I would be Goku and he'd be Vegeta), chess, or Mortal Kombat on his old SNES. Yes I was a geeky tomboy don't judge me.

I'm in the same boat as DreamingofRoses. I don't think I could win a game even if my life depended on it. Also, my dad tried teaching me how to play chinese chess when I was a little kid, but I forgot just about everything right after he said it so he only ever tried the once.

Chinese chess? Do tell. Would this be the one with the black and white pebbly things also featured in Mulan?

I know the rules of chess but I utterly fail at strategy. I know you have to claim territory but as far as cornering and striking I'm lost. It'd be fun to have a big tournament with everybody~ Which makes me like Seiji all the more~ Those two seem like the type to endlessly play games while briefly showing off to P-chan in Seiji's gigantic library. Hmm, fanart potential there. Better yet, draw all the characters as chess pieces: P-chan is Black Queen of course. Niina can be a bishop...or maybe a knight actually with judo-kun and the brothers are rooks?

My love for Seiji continues to grow. How can one fictional pixelated character push so many of my favorite buttons?

As for chess, I'm in the same boat of knowing how to play but not how to win. I used to play Chinese chess as well, but I could never remember the rules of that without referring constantly to a manual despite actually being Chinese, man what a disgrace I am. I only vaguely remember river-crossing. And elephants.
