Let's take back the kingdom! Memoirs of an Angel

Hello, one and all, members and lurkers alike. My name is keifufairies and I've been registered since early October, yet I've never made a Let's Play. So I decided to go for a pretty light game for my first LP: Memoirs of an Angel.



The game was made by Anigrams Productions and it's free to play (so feel free to head on over here and play it for yourself). As such I'll only be covering one out of the four routes. Unfortunately, I'm not playing this blind; I've played all but one route.

So let's get started! Memoirs begins with a sort of internal dialogue/journal entry where Zuleika (our main character) explains the nature of angels, recounts a little history for us, and describes a bit about herself.





This part baffles me a little bit. I'm guessing that humans manage to manifest an angel by wishing or praying very strongly for something. If anyone else can think of a better explanation, please share it, cause I feel like mine's kinda weak.











I decided to go with well-rounded ruler for several reasons. While it doesn't have any particular strengths, it also doesn't have any weaknesses, so all my stats start out the same across the board. Along with strengths and weaknesses, each class comes with a special ability (gift giving, dance competitions, investigating, etcetera). Choosing a well-rounded ruler gives us access to all of these abilities, as opposed to one. This is also the only class that gives you five turns per day as opposed to three (which will make more sense later). Of course, the well-rounded ruler is only available after you’ve beaten the game once.

Good game. Also the gal who made this is doing a "remake" with some tightened down art and a new character. It will probably be awhile, but just so you guys know.

Wait, if she's the princess, does that make her entire family angels, or doesn't it work that way?

I remember seeing this game and thinking it looked cool, but wanting to wait for the updated version to play it. But I will be keeping up with this LP because it looks really interesting!

So we're like a ronin... right?





And while he was at it, he had someone stab that guy.



And stabbing people.

Zuleika goes on to explain that, though she was next in line for the throne, she was ousted as princess when Osirus died due to High Court’s misogyny. Being an angel apparently didn't help her case.



At least not all is lost! In fact, given the circumstances, that seems almost generous. Which leads me to wonder why they call him Nefferon the Crue---



Oh... that's why.

No, she says later that Osirus "created" her, and she doesn't have any family. So... I have no idea how she came about. Zuleika just is.

Ah, brothers. When they don't stalk every boy you know, they stab you in the back and take your kingdom.

Quick shot of Zuleika's boudoir before the game cuts to the view outside her window. Staring at the stars outside, Zuleika's mind is still on the war.









Zuleika recalls how kind and proud Osirus had been before the war. This is quite possibly a side of the late Emperor that only Zuleika saw. Either way, after becoming Emperor and uniting the nations, Osirus seemed to have gone mad with power, which lead to the War of the Nations and, eventually, his death.

The quiet and uneventful evening is interrupted when







Quick, Zuleika, grab a weapon! Get him in a choke hold! Do something!



... Or don't do anything at all...



From his white hair and blue eyes, Zuleika surmises that the intruder must be from the Nalani nation. Good observation. Now get out of there.



Wait... wut?

What a polite assassin. I'd probably have commented on his WINGS before his eyes and hair, but okay. Different strokes.

Well, Zuleika has wings, too (two wings of different colors, no less), so I suppose that didn't really stick out to her.

Ah, yes, I rather assumed it was an angel thing, which is why I was a bit surprised she didn't think he was one as her first reaction.

The weird thing is, despite her claim that angels are rare, almost everyone in the story is an angel or demon (if you don't count the NPCs). I'm guessing they're still rare on the whole, but Zuleika has a childhood friend that's an angel, there's this guy (obviously an angel), and then a demon she has yet to meet. That's three out of the four love interests.

Is it possible Osirus told her 'rare' means 'common' for a laugh and then just let her go on being wrong about it because he was always sort of a jerk? Oh, wait, no that's a plotline on Scrubs. Only it was different words.

But I thought you were gonna k---



... Oh. That is polite.

Exactly.



And so we come to our decision. Does Zuleika take the strangers hand and make a break for it? Or should she stay and save the kingdom from within?

The choice isn’t exactly a choice, per se. This is where the story branches into two different parts. What Zuleika does will be determined by who you decide to romance (I’ll post the perspective love interests shortly).

Should he really be called 'assassin' in his title after he says 'I do not wish to kill you'? I mean, unless he's a particularly bad assassin, that's not normal assassin behaviour.

I'm going to stop nitpicking now. The game does seem very good so far.

Well, he did come with the intent to kill. And isn't it the thought that counts?

I'm going to stop arguing now. If anyone notices anything they don't like about the LP style (too many pictures, not enough explanation, etc.) feel free to tell me. Can't improve without feedback. And don't worry, I won't get offended or try to challenge you on it. First LP: WHY AM I NERVOUS?

Chael, "the Wise" - Prince of Nalan
An assassin from the elven nation of Nalan and Menorrhi's angel who was sent to kill the princess for unknown reasons. He is quiet and stoic, choosing to keep his emotions hidden from others.

Kirile, "the Powerful" - "Prince" of Pyralis
He was once a proud general from the demon nation of Pyralis and Aukinora's angel, but took up thievery after being exiled. He loves women, booze, and having fun, but he has a sentimental side as well.

Duren, "the Rogue" - Prince of Tyraca
Zuleika's long-time friend, Nefferon’s angel, and now prince of Tyraca, but he is anything but proud of his new position. He is generally polite and mild-mannered...except when he gets angry.

Nefferon, "the Cruel" - Emperor of Tyraca
The new emperor and a dangerous man who will do anything to get what he wants. He has a cool and collected demeanor, and can charm and manipulate his way into anyone’s heart. He seems particularly interested in Zuleika.

Wait the asshat who took over our kingdom is an option?

I vote we run off with the Worst Assassin Ever.

Voting for Chael. I have a thing for the stoic types (in fiction, at least).

Oh, this looks interesting. Also voting for Chael.

Because we are who we are (aka brokenforum), I feel that romancing the guy who took over our kingdom makes total sense.

But if not him, then worst assassin evarrrr.

Romance Worst Assassin Ever, dispose of him and ascend to the Throne yourself and then use your new army to sweep away every adversary until all the world is under your iron fist.

I was hoping I knew someone would say that.

That is acceptable.

I will attempt to convince everyone to romance the usurper.

Nefferon "the cruel". Look! His nickname is in quotes. So he's only "cruel", not CRUEL. And he kind of looks like Severus Snape, which is never a bad thing, and... um... he's already interested in us, so, easy get? Besides. This can in no way go wrong.

(But seriously, he's obviously the Fat Bird of this game. Let's go, people).

I just caught up on the Black Wolf Saga LP, scoured the vast internet for further info on the kitty princes, and I say bring it, Neffie. We can only go up from here in my opinion.

...On the other hand, Chael's really pretty so I might as well just vote for everyone.

Alright, so you see that black heart in the lower right corner? Much like the Harvest Moon series, in Memoirs you can tell how someone feels about by the color of the heart. I can't really remember the color order, but I think it's black, blue, green, yellow, red. We're in the story arc that doesn't really feature Duren, so his heart won't change much.

This is not starting well.

Zuleika tries to explain to Duren that she isn't being kidnapped, but...



It didn't really work (or did it?)





Um... Zuleika? I think we've already established that he is not an assassin, so maybe you could---oh, nevermind.





Which is too bad, cause Duren just caught up with Chael in terms of likevotes.

If you couldn't tell, there were multiple artists working on Memoirs. I actually really like the different styles, but some of them look more like fanart than gameart. Not so much here, but if you downloaded the game, take a look at Chael's profile and you might see what I mean. Obviously still the same character, but drawn much differently.

And from jumping through windows we find ourselves... here. And it's really quite pretty, isn't it? I'm just going to assume they spent the running from the guards until they got far away enough to make camp. You can decide for yourselves whether or not Chael was carrying her the entire time.





Well, hello, handso---DAMMIT, Zuleika! He is not an assassin. Assassin's assassinate. You have not been assassinated. Ergo, he is not an assassin.





Pretty casual considering the circumstances, but at least Zuleika's better at making conversation than I am (wait, what does that say about me?).
