Hi, so I've been doing these over at my previous thread, but Anabanana pointed out (correctly) that that thread was becoming a bit of a jumbled mess. So I decided to fork these into it's own place, as they're the most "LP"-y things I've done.

Warning beforehand: some of these are long. after testing out some checkpoint stuff (thanks for the heads up Pogo) I found I could have better breaks for smaller videos, but the first two missions were in the can before I learned this, so they're humoungous.

As for the game: it's a very very fun Character Action game, as I heard of these being called. Think Bayonetta, God Of War, Darksiders, etc. It's the 5th game in the series, but it's more of a reboot than a continuation; new developer, new focus, new look, new design make for a pretty different game from its predecessors, from what I saw. I wouldn't know first hand, because I never played the old ones.

Anyway, all the warnings and disclaimers aside, it's my attempt at a full video LP of a game. I hope you'll find it entertaining, and a good showcase for the game even if you just skim it for the action and cutscenes. So far, I'm finding this game *extremely* fun, with enjoyable characters (mostly) and amazing combat.

Also also: first cutscene has a bit of sexist bullshit, but it seems like it's been getting better since. YMMV, but I didn't find it detracted too much from the game (then again: white male european atheist, so y'know, privilege)

    On to the videos!

Intro and first mission. Visual style is stupidly impressive, Dante is a douchebag, smily capitalist demon is slimy, decidedly undignified old lady.

Second mission in its entirety (45 minutes! Yikes!). Manages to look even more amazing, Dante is Eminently Punchable, Female Sidekick is Female and little else, Let's Figure Out The Plot 30 Minutes Before Main Character, Dapper Brother Will Not Be Revealed As Evil Honest Just Trust Us All He Lacks Is A British Accent.

I think the momentary framerate chugging has to be some interaction with recording, maybe? I get silky smooth frames with a much less powerful video card.

holy shit someone actually watched it.

Yeah, I dunno. Gonna try to record mission 3 tonight, and I've changed FRAPS to 60fps video capture, let's see if that helps. There's an option to lock framerate as well, might play around with it.

I got really excited when I saw this since I loved this game as a kid, but this is not the game I remember. That bit with him flying through the trailer and getting dressed simultaneously is much more ridiculous than I remember the intro being. The whole thing is, but that scene in particular. Looks like this one is a revamp of the original series. Haven't had time to sit down and watch an entire mission in one sitting, kinda jumped around a bit, but when I have I'll leave some actual constructive criticism. I don't watch a lot of LPs, though, so I might not have many suggestions.

I skip around. I tend to bypass anything having to do with you looking through menus or watching cutscenes, I just watched scenes of you handling the fighting.
  8. Astromarine Elitist Negative Nancy

yeah, I get that for fans of the old game it might be a bit different. But get a feeling there's a bit of rose colored glasses. I mean, this is arguably more ridiculous (as well as WAY more sexist) than pizzadick:

However, try to stick with it. the tone of the game changes quite a lot after that intro, and it's really not representative of what comes later. Pogo finished the game, so he can be more definitive on that, but so far that's my impression.

I didn't really understand the comment about a revamp of the series or being more ridiculous (as in, what way?). DMC cutscenes were always over the top, but it's really only the first cutscene that's a callback to earlier ridiculousness. This game doesn't have the 5-minute action cutscenes that were soaked with stylistic anime roots like every other game before it.

I never actually played the forth game. Just the first (and a little bit of the third). Which was pretty ridiculous (I believe I recall someone kicking a motorcycle at Dante), but it didn't have any lines like,"Soon the world will be your bitch, as am I." I think that's way more sexist than seeing a guitar covering Dante's crotch (which isn't sexist, just weird).

I just saw DMC in the title and came in. Wait, what? Is that actually in the video?

I played the third game, and it rocked. I hear the others weren't as good or something, so gave up on playing the fourth game. Plus, DMC3!Vergil isn't there. Vergil~

you'll want to watch the second video then if you like Virgil. :)

And yes, that line is in there. In my opinion, that whole first cutscene is a giant misstep.

I'm watching the first video, but this reboot it's painful. I only played the third and a bit of the first one, but...at least those were funny.
  14. Astromarine Elitist Negative Nancy

Third episode up, smaller than the others ones thankfully. Nothing much happens during the mission, but the plot moves forward a bit, we now have a plan of action: to blow up Fox News and Coca Cola.

What's strange about that mission is that on the 2nd playthrough, on Son of Sparda mode, you can't even go up to the balcony, you just have a fight in the courtyard and then go straight over the broken street and through the limbo gate and the mission ends. Literally a 3 minute mission, since I guess the whole point of it is to go get the rose and get your angel fly ability.

And because there's only one short fight it's nearly impossible to get a SSS score on it because the enemies die before your combo ever gets to it. Very strange design decision.
  16. Astromarine Elitist Negative Nancy

can you remove all your upgrades to play it? seems like that would be the way to get longer combos.
  17. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Nah, can't remove angel dash. I'll probably just have to replay it and see if I can't find a combo that will get me to SSS.
  18. Astromarine Elitist Negative Nancy

didn't mean the dash, just the damage upgrades
  19. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Oh, I'll try that. I read somewhere that combos were partly based on damage so it might not work.
  20. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Alright I was completely fucking it up. I forgot that you're supposed to go back after the street breaking cutscene since originally you couldn't just fly over it with angel dash. So uhh... yeah, the whole level is there, it's just skippable upon redo.

Still fucked it up since they spawn 3 chainsaws (which enrage every 5 seconds, which needs perfect demon weapon parries to counter), plus 4 shield knights.

I'm getting a little burnt out. The need to use demon weapons is just too severe, without them being all that fun to use. They're definitely powerful single-target timed attack parry weapons in Son of Sparda and it eventually gets tiring. My hands might be getting too old for this shit.
  21. OtomeGamer Already Beat BF's New Expansion

Vergil looks...so different. I mean, yeah, Dante is completely different looking and I should have expected it, but...a hat? Does he have terrible bed hair? And he's very talkative and happy...I'm just going to look at him as the alter ego for now.

"Oh hey there, Audacity, I can't help but notice you're NOT recording the awesome commentary I made for this half hour long mission that I wanted to upload tonight. Y u do dis, Audacity? Why can't you be a GOOD little audio program, that always records what I say even if I forget to press the giant fucking red button that says "RECORD" before I start playing?"

New episode up! Also new intro! it's so good to have talented friends willing to work for free...

Mission 4 is another standard mission, not much happens except for a couple new enemies being introduced.

And yes, if I'm not mistaken I've reused a stupid joke about missing the "start recording" button. RIVETING CONTENT, FOLKS!

I continue to *really* enjoy the game though, and it seems pretty much misogyny-free ever since the first cutscene.

You sorta can have "that move" in the game, there's a pull+kick as an upgradeable basic ability.

DMC always had that odd double jump stiffness, I think it's caused by the games having such a fast fall speed for its physics. However, unlike the previous games, there is never actually any horizontal platforming that requires a double jump in this game. It's just a saving grace for missing a jump.

Pretty sure Dante's joke at the end was implying that getting out of limbo is as tedious as sitting through a church service. I've never been dragged into limbo, but I'm inclined to agree.
  28. Astromarine Elitist Negative Nancy

Sorry, which "that move" do you mean? I'm confused.

hehe maybe. I was just weirded out by two completely randmo non-sequiturs by Dante in one mission.

ANYWAY. New video up! Mission 5, new capture method, and me missing almost every single collectible this mission. Please let me know if you think it looks worse/better than previous episodes!

Also if I may impose: if you guys are liking the videos, could you please like, subscribe, and comment on youtube itself? Every little bit helps, and I would seriously appreciate it.

Video! a short-boss fight mission that can be completed in 3:30 (I checked). You'll notice the video is 20 minutes long. Because of, er, reasons. /cryofshame

    I'm old. What are videogame?

I enjoy watching you fail in ways I didn't, and watching you succeed in ways I didn't.

It took me fighting succubus on Son of Sparda mode to realize that if you hit the exposed red "brain" that kinda slinks out of his head after he attacks, it does significantly more damage than hitting his hands.
  31. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

And totally agree about the organic nature of the "QTEs," like how you have to actually attack his hand to get that final kill instead of just a "Y Y Y Y Y" popup. Also, those QTE-like sections also have actual fail states.
  32. Astromarine Elitist Negative Nancy

yep. OTOH, it took me getting an achievement for completing the traversal section killing all enemies to realize that you didn't actually need to kill anyone. Too used to the game trapping you in combat scenarios I guess.
  33. Astromarine Elitist Negative Nancy

Video! This one is weird. It's been a while since I played, and I'm been kinda stressed out at work. That's a nasty combo that leads to me failing a lot and ranting too much at everything. Mission's fun though.
